Just so it won't slip by you, since Sue is right-handed, she switched hands she was using to hold her communicator so she could pull her phaser.

FYI Mr. Leslie outranks Sue in grade seniority, since he's been a lieutenant longer than her (her promotion is fairly recent, see the first page of STNV "Intersection Point"), but Captain Kirk put Sue in charge of the landing party. That means she's in command, and whatever is going to go down with regards to what happened to Jan and her team is Sue's call, until such time as Kirk and the Enterprise intervene. You see a similar situation in TAS "Bem," when Lt. Uhura orders Scotty and Sulu back to the ship per Kirk's previous instructions after they lose contact with Kirk and Spock. Both of them outrank her, Sulu on grade seniority as implied throughout TOS and Scotty outranks Uhura by a full rank grade since he's a lieutenant commander, but Kirk left Uhura in command of the Enterprise (one of the few times that happens in TOS/TAS). It's her call, not theirs, and it remains that way until Scotty returns to the ship and relieves Uhura at the con. SOP, folks.
