It's with this page that I finish up my STNV housecleaning and roll over into the original short story's adventure proper, which begins in rewritten form on the last two panels.  Yes, it's a cliffhanger of sorts.  More to come on the next page.  XD

Back to the STNV housekeeping for a moment.  Ever since I began STNV years ago, and even back in its original Adamsverse-esque form, I have been planning for Kirk and Nurse Kelly to get together in some way where they can just be themselves, if you know what I'm saying.  Nothing as silly as the way the Franchise has redone Spock and Chapel's relationship for SNW (a-hem), but sooner or later come up with a way for the two of them to be alone together in an informal setting and let things go from there.  This was the best opportunity to do so, given that I needed to pad this episode out a bit for STNV purposes, and what happened to Nurse Kelly a couple of episodes back in "Marginal Existence" provides the backdrop for this less formal and more sociable interaction between the two of them.  What happens during Kirk and Nurse Kelly's dinner together is of course going to be the minor sideline entertainment for this episode, folks.  The real fun is coming from the original short story's material.

You know how the captain is about these kind of things.  It was established early in TOS starting with its first regular produced episode, "The Corbomite Maneuver" and re-emphasized a bit later with "Dagger of the Mind," that Kirk has a personal rule not to get romantically involved with any member of his crew.  Why?  Because such a relationship could have a negative impact on his performance as a captain, and he didn't want that liability.  Of course all of you know how that eventually played out and the price he had to pay for that (no long term romances period).  FWIW Captain Picard went through much the same thing about eight decades later, and the best example of this was his romance with his own subordinate Lt. Cmdr. Nella Darren in TNG "Lessons."  I can speak from my own personal experience here in that long term romantic relationships have a definite impact on work performance, both good and bad, and if you decide not to completely abstain from them as Kirk did and Picard later wishes he had, then you've got to find your own way to walk a very tricky tightrope.  Good luck and I mean that, and if you can or have already found a way to make it work then congratulations.  Of course the real question here is whether or not Kirk's going to violate his own rule with Nurse Kelly, as Picard chose to do later on in his time with Lt. Cmdr Darren.  We'll see.

... given how badly my first landing party detail went. - See STNV "Marginal Existence."  That was the first time Nurse Kelly was ever put in charge of a landing party (or away team in TNG speak), and through no fault of her own her experience went badly due to extenuating circumstances and resulted in the death of one of the people under her command.  I recommend you read the episode if you haven't already for all the details.

Jan tried and failed for almost a year to get a date with Captain Kirk - When she was serving as his yeoman during her first posting to the Enterprise, and she admitted her feelings in one of the more dramatic scenes in TOS "Miri," and Kirk privately admitting to Spock in TOS "The Naked Now" how he yearned to return them but couldn't because he was the captain.  That's why Jan eventually wound up with Scotty in STNV, three years later during her second posting, as well as being much the wiser for her experience.

It's not like he's out to make me the next notch on his belt ... - And boy, does James T. Kirk have quite a few and would tick off even more before all was said and done, didn't he?  XD

scuttlebutt - Naval slang term for shipboard gossip.

Mr. Spock is going on shore leave. - Hold that thought until the next page.  Remember the LAST time Mr. Spock went on shore leave in this timeframe?  (TOS "Amok Time")  Now maybe you can better understand Dr. McCoy's shocked reaction.
