Ported to OBJ from the SketchUp model created by Lazarus Starkweather. Preview picture posed in XNALara XPS. NO MODEL DOWNLOAD.
Barbel was the last full class of diesel-electric attack submarines (SS or SSK) ever built by the United States Navy (USN). They were also the first class of USN submarines to employ the teardrop hull (first pioneered by the experimental sub Albacore), with lead boat Barbel beating the nuclear powered Skipjack into commission by three months, and also the first to use HY-80 steel in their construction (again beating Skipjack in that regard). It was the best diesel-electric boat of its time, with the added advantage of being quieter underwater than a nuke boat (although lacking the speed and endurance of such), and would set the standard for all such subsequent boats by other nations, even though the USN itself no longer uses diesel-electric boats on a fleetwide basis. In terms of overall design they were almost identical to the contemporary Skipjacks save for using diesel-electric drive instead of a nuclear reactor for power and propulsion. Only three Barbels were ever built, with tentative plans to build more quietly scrubbed due to the success of Skipjack. All three quietly served through the middle of the Cold War, and were phased out of service from 1988 to 1990 with no successors built or planned, as the USN had already switched exclusively to building nuke boats instead. Nevertheless Barbel's legacy lives on in each successive generation of diesel boats built the world over from its time onward. USS Blueback (SS-581) is the only survivor of the class, and has been a museum ship at the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry in Portland, Oregon since 1994. This is a straighforward port with no changes by me.
This is not my work. All I did was port it for you. Please credit Lazarus Starkweather for the original. You do not have to credit me for my OBJ port.

TRIVIA - The USN slang nickname for the Barbel class was "the B-girls," since all three of them had names beginning with the letter "B" and naval vessels are traditionally referred to in the feminine gender (for example, "She's a tall ship.").
ASIDE - You can also use this model to represent the Dutch Zwaardvis class, with the appropriate texture changes, as it was a fairly close copy of Barbel.
PERSONAL - A fellow I used to work with a few jobs back was a retired Navy mechanic who served for a time on one of the Barbels. He was very proud of having served on a "pig boat" (more USN slang) and was never tired of saying so. We always joked that he had spent too much time in the engine room huffing diesel fumes. (laugh)
