Description

NEW FOR 2021!

Ported to OBJ from the waterline model original created by Earl Watkins and as further enhanced by Erwin Welker for Microsoft's Combat Flight Simulator 2 (CFS2).  Preview picture posed in XNALara XPS.  NO MODEL DOWNLOAD.

The original Cimarron class oilers, not to be confused with the late Cold War class of the same name, were among the largest of its type built for the United States Navy (USN) during World War II.  They were militarized versions of the MARCOM/MARAD standard T3 tanker (T3-S2-A1) fitted with UNREP gear for underway refueling of warships on deployment as needed, and they began entering USN service starting in 1939.  Their fuel capacity was so large for the time that the Cimarrons served as the primary fleet oilers for both its fast carrier task forces and for most amphibious assault operations in the Pacific.  Their proven value at the time meant that they were retained for Cold War use along with their sister spin-off Mispillion and Ashtabula sub-classes.  They were also overhauled and modernized during the early 1950s and most of them again during the early 1960s (*) to ensure their continued usefulness.   Cimarrons supported USN operations during the subsequent Korean War and the later Vietnam War.  By this time they were finally beginning to show their age, and so the USN began to withdraw them from service and scrap them starting in 1969 with class ship USS Cimarron (AO-22), with the last handful continuing in service in various capacities as late as the early 1980s before they too were retired to the reserve.  The last group of Cimarrons in USN reserves were sent to the breakers in 2010.  To find out more about the mostly unsung but definitely appreciated Cimarron class oiler of the USN during the Cold War era, follow the links below:

This is a straight port with only two changes by me from the version of this model included with the Tonkin Gulf Yacht Club add-on pack for CFS2.  It depicts a typical Cimarron of the era with the 1950s refit and as fitted for supporting USN forces at Yankee Station off the coast of Vietnam during that particular conflict.  My only changes were to remove the hull numbers from the provided textures and the extra objects on the decks fore and aft (vehicles, internodal shipping containers, crates, etc.) so this could serve as a generic Cold War era Cimarron class oiler (post-1950s refit) for your USN Cold War project needs.  I went ahead and included the original Tonkin Gulf Yacht Club version of this model (see preview piccy upper left), complete with original textures and extra deck objects, both for the sake of its creators and for those of you who might want it or need it.

This is not my model.  All I did was port it to OBJ for you and make the two changes as noted above.  Please credit Earl Watkins as the original creator and Erwin Welker for his additional enhancements if you use this in any of your own 3D projects.  You do not have to credit me for my part.

For non-profit, non-commercial use only.

(*) The 1960s refits was when the "jumboization" program took place.  See the separate entry on Mispillion for more information.

ASIDE - This is a very necessary USN auxiliary for fleet operations during the first three-fifths of the Cold War, especially during the Korean and Vietnam Wars.  That's why I've included it as part of my C21VN online collection.
