UPDATE - Replaced the CadNav model with a better looking one by SH4G master CG artist Nathaniel Karle, aka karle94.
--------------------
Ported to OBJ from the model created by Nathaniel Karle, aka karle94, for Silent Hunter 4 Gold Edition (SH4G or SH4 1.5) by Ubisoft. Preview picture posed in XNALara XPS. NO MODEL DOWNLOAD.
Seawolf was the post Cold War successor to the storied Los Angeles or "688 boat" class of nuclear powered attack submarines for the United States Navy (USN). They actually began development during the era of the Reagan administration in the mid-1980s and a total of 29 were originally planned, but this was later cut back to just 12 due to later defense budget constraints and the end of the Cold War. In the end the Seawolf program was terminated at just three boats total due both to lack of perceived need and their enormous cost, with each one costing just over US$3 billion dollars apiece (!!!), and the smaller and less expensive Virgina class of attack boats was developed and authorized in their place. Part of the reason for their exorbitant cost was they had all of the most advanced submarine warfare technologies available at the time so they could take on and beat the best Soviet attack submarines, as well as hunt down and kill the mighty Typhoon ballistic missile submarine wherever in the world's ocean deeps it was hidden. In addition to these capabilities the third and final boat in the class, USS Jimmy Carter (SSN-23) was significantly longer than the first two due to the insertion of a special section that allowed it to operate small submersibles and remote underwater vehicles, primarily for Navy SEAL team use. It was modified during construction so it could replace the aging USS Parche (SSN-683), a modified Sturgeon class boat that had formerly filled this role. Those modifications made it cost roughly US$3.5 billion to build, which wound up being a further nail driven into the coffin of the Seawolf program. I should point out that unlike the troubled Zumwalt class destroyers, Seawolf did everything it was designed to do and did it extremely well. It just cost too much and wasn't really needed in a post Cold War era when a smaller nuke boat built with even more modern technology (Virgina) could do most of the same things at less cost. This is a straight port with no changes by me. It depicts a standard Seawolf only, but could be converted for the longer and more specialized USS Jimmy Carter by those with the appropriate skill.
While I am no longer making my OBJ ports of Silent Hunter series models available for public download, you can get this yourself in one of two ways. You can extract it piecemeal from the game data using the free SKWAS/s3ditor model utility and rebuild it in your preferred 3D modeling software, or you can rip it directly from the game after installing any necessary mods or mod packs noted above using any good 3D model ripper (3D Ripper DX or NinjaRipper recommended).
That said, there's an absolutely free Chinese made Seawolf class CG model floating around the Internet ether, and which you can find at many of the better free 3D model sites (I recommend CadNav). It's the same I used to feature here before I got this one, and while it doesn't have quite the detail it's still very nice IMHO. Good luck hunting!
