Ported to OBJ from the SketchUp model created by Lazarus Starkweather. Preview picture posed in XNALara XPS. NO MODEL DOWNLOAD.
The Cold War era Skipjack, which first entered service in 1959, represented a paradigm shift in the way the United States Navy (USN) built its nuke boats. It was the first production class of USN nuclear powered submarines built with teardrop-shaped hulls (NOTE - the diesel-powered Barbels also had teardrop hulls and beat Skipjack into service by three months). This would be used from that point on with all USN major sub classes as they had proven to be far more effective than older hull designs for underwater operations. It was the first to be built using HY-80 high tensile steel, which would also become the standard all the way until the Los Angeles class. It was the first to use the S5Y pressurized water cooled nuclear reactor (or PWR in Navy slang), and this too would become a USN standard in the years to come for many subsequent nuclear sub classes and one-offs. In fact it was so successful that it in turn not only served as the design basis for its own attack submarine (SSN) successors, but as the design starting point for USN's new nuclear ballistic missile submarines (SSBN) beginning with the George Washington class. Other nations would also be inspired to produce their own Shipjack style nuke boats. As for the Skipjacks themselves, they served quietly but very effectively through the middle third of the Cold War, and were slowly retired during the late 1980s and partway through 1990 as more units of later classes were built to take their place. The last operational Skipjack class submarine, USS Sculpin (SSN-590), was decommissioned in August of 1990. None survive today, as all surviving Skipjacks were scrapped in keeping with USN policy and practice regarding its nuclear-powered warships and submarines. This is a straightforward port with no changes by me save to retexture the main prop. You will have to alter the included textures yourself if you want to change the boat name and hull number.
This is not my model. All I did was port it for you. Please credit Lazarus Starkweather for his original effort. You do not have to credit me for my OBJ port.

TRIVIA - The Skipjack class submarine Scorpion (SSN-589) is one of only two nuke boats that the USN has lost to date (in comparison to the Russian record). On 22 May 1968 as she was running alone underwater near the Azores while returning home from shadowing Soviet naval units in the Atlantic, and without any other ships or subs known to be within 200 miles of her, a mysterious explosion ruptured her hull and crippled her so badly that she foundered and sank below crush depth, killing everyone on board. Various theories have been posited over the years as to how this happened but to this day no one really knows for sure what caused that explosion, despite intense analysis of SONUS recordings of the actual sinking picked up at the time and numerous on-site surveys of its remains conducted by deep-sea diving crews in the years since.
