Description Father John Joseph Reid and Father Lawrence Turner are Catholic priest that fell in love with each other and married in Massachusetts. They now preside over the New Devine Mercy Catholic Communities. The opening statement of their website is listed below.

In imitation of Jesus Christ, we welcome all people to worship and celebrate God's all-inclusive love with us. Whoever you are, where ever you are in your life, we thank you for choosing to be here with us today. Our Mission: To Extend God's Kingdom of Justice, Truth, Love and Peace. [link]

More than 1,000 people attended a rally at Fort Lauderdale City Hall protesting the passage of Amendment 2 in Florida and Proposition 8 in California, which discriminates against LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender/transsexual ) people in The United States of America.

The protests were part of the β€œJoin the Impact” [link] campaign to have a synchronized reaction of outrage across the country because of the passage of laws in Arizona, California and Florida defining marriage as an institution between a man and a woman only.

Proposition 8 in California and Amendment 2 in Florida have become a symbol of the struggle for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender rights. It is also argued the laws will restrict rights to heterosexuals who are domestic partners and not married.

i understand your need to not explain anything to me but your lack of doing so makes your words pretty much mute since you can not back up any of your statements as to why it is wrong.

good day do you

congrats! this to me is TRUE photojournalism. a photo with a story to tell! i love the composition of this piece i love how you captured father john in the foreground in the position he is in, calm, peaceful, with his hands placed together. makes me wonder if he is praying or if this is some natural position and perhaps he is at peace with HIS life? the flag in the background is so profound but does not distract from the two fathers. you really caught a special moment. congrats on your well deserved DD

Great photo and great message. I never heard of their story and I'm catholic. Very interesting. Tolerance for race, religion, and sexual orientation should be accepted and these two priests seem to be starting that.

Be advised that these priests are most likely excommunicated from the Catholic church.

I think that's one of the weirdest things I've ever heard.
Two catholic priests marrying each other? Catholic priests believe it's wrong for them to marry in the first place, but to another priest when the Catholic religion believes homosexuality is wrong?

This is a great picture, no offense to you at all, but this is sort of shocking to me. It's something I've never heard of. o.o

They are most likely excommunicated from the Catholic Church; thus, no longer priests in the church.

Not to completely patronize this image, but the New Testament shows homosexuality as unrighteous:

1 Corinthians 6:9 New American Standard
Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals,

(I prefer the NASB because it's a literal translation)

This isn't even some "primitive" Old Testament law we're looking at. It isn't just for the Jews. If you're living explicitly by what scripture says I don't see how following suit with homosexual wants + Jesus isn't a conflict of interests.

I think that this is wonderfully affirming. Love in most of its forms is a beautiful thing. And that it's brought up interesting dialog has its merits as well. Personally, I don't believe in dogma (religion) written in a time so long ago, they thought the earth was flat, I believe in God. So, while I too am a parent, and would love grandchildren, all I really care about is that my kids are happy. I certainly wouldn't hate them for living a life without having kids (particularly in an age of overpopulation), or loving someone of the save gender. I certainly wouldn't condemn them for loving who they do, particularly if I gave them free will. Its sort of like rubbing candy in their face, leaving them alone with it, and getting pissed because they ate it. And if I can get over it, I'm sure a more divine, perfect creator would FAR outstrip me in patience and love of its children.

Man... you have no idea how much this is moving me. I wish everybody could see this, everybody could understand. All the hate in this world... hate against people who just want to LOVE. Why can't we be free in LOVE?! Why do people consider it sick to love? They must be sick themselves, and I pray for them to be healed one day.

God DOES love everybody.

I don't care if someone is straight or gay as long as they're happy with their loved ones X3

the others that think homosexuality is a sin and whatnot..well..let them think what they want. I think god is the one that has to decide whether or not he likes it.

Despite all the religous and political arguements being made over this picture I think it's a beautiful shot. It takes courage to stand up for what you believe and these men have that courage.
Amazing shot!

Love knows no gender, no race, no religion, or any other belief known to man. That's what I think and I stand by it.

Amazing message aside, just the composition of this piece is wonderful. The way the fag contrasts with the priests robes, the way the flag reflects on the steps... it's just lovely.

Then, of course, there's the message behind it, which I applaud even more.

Congrats on the DD, you definitely deserve it!

I cannot say that I really like all this religious stuff, but this is a quite good thing.
Love has no gender. And homophobia has nothing to do with love. If you are oh so good and oh so saint than you have to accept all love. No matter if a man loves a man or a woman loves a woman. This is real love, too.

I'm sick and tired of people condemning love. We already don't have enough of it in the world, and yet some people will do everything in their power to keep it from happening. Why should it bother you that a man wants to marry another man? Or a woman another woman? What does it really change in your life? Nothing. If you don't approve, that's fine. But don't think you have any right to take away someone else's rights. I'm not religious, but my whole family is extremely Catholic. I know how they, and many other religions, feel about gay people. And I know that the bible says it's wrong (while still saying to love your neighbor, by the way). But not everyone believes in the bible, or in god. Not everyone believes in the torah or the quran, or whatever other holy scripture you happen to follow. I even know that many people from all sorts of religions choose only to follow the parts of their religion that they agree with. There are gay people in every single religion, whether you want to admit it or not.
I find it sad, and I'm extremely ashamed of the human race when it comes to this subject. There are pointless wars, and genocides, and people dying everywhere for absolutely no reason. And, yet, even as this is happening, we are more concerned about gay people wanting to get married? Because it's a sin? What we're letting happen to our planet, and the people in it, is the only "sin" I can see. If you fight for human rights, if you fight against poverty, if you fight for womens rights, if you fight for the rights of every race to be equal, then you fight for the rights of every single human being. Not only the ones you think deserve it.
If you think being self-righteous, and appointing yourself and your religion to pick out all the "sinners", is helping the world become a better place, you're wrong. It disgusts me that people can be so cruel. And in the name of god, on top of that. "Only god can pass judgment." Ring any bells? If you're going to stick to your rules and your religion so fiercely, then how about you stop overlooking one of the key things the bible tells you.

I do, however, agree that if they are catholic priests, as far as I know, they cannot get married, at all. I'm not sure this makes much sense, in that respect.

No problem

Sadly, I don't think that's doable :/ I've got into arguments with religious fanatics and there's no reasoning that can pierce through those thick skulls of theirs. I'm not saying religion is bad, though. Just because I don't agree with it doesn't mean it's 'stupid' and 'horrible'. It's the people who feel the need to justify their hatred by using a 2000 year old book that really get to me. Because, honestly, saying 'Naaaah I don't hate you, I just think you'll burn in hell for all eternity 8D!' is the same as hating, no matter how they try to twist it around.

I'm not saying all Christians are like that, either >_>;

Religion could be something beautiful if they could open a history book once in a while and realise Christianity wasn't always around

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

jdougg In reply to MissRoxieGraves [2008-11-30 23:55:32 +0000 UTC]

I agree! I used to really hate religion of any sort, until I got into mythology while taking a course on Ancient Greeks and Romans. Mythology opened my eyes to how alike all religions really are, but also got me way too interested in the subject. I've taken a World Religions course, and since I had an absolutely fantastic teacher who wasn't afraid of telling us the facts (despite being in a catholic school where there were some things she wasn't really allowed to say, but did anyway), I learned that religions, at their core, are very beautiful. It's humans who have twisted them around.
But, yeah, I agree. Christians are not all alike. I know many who don't have any problem with gay people, and respect other people's beliefs. Of course, since there are extremists in every religion, there are also those who respect others-- I just wish there were more of them around. I mean, we mostly focus on the bad side of people, because that's easiest to remember, but I've met and spoken to too many people who were very respectful of what others thought, to say that a whole religious group is bad.

I've come to think that a 'World Religions' course should be mandatory or something. People are fearful of what they don't understand, and ignorant in regards to what other religions actually believe. Judaism, Islam and Christianity were created by the sons of the same man. This is stated clearly in the bible. But most people choose to forget that part, I think.

Anyway, haha, I like talking about religions waaay too much. xD
