Description After much demand, I decided to make a tutorial on how to make detailed asteroids in 3dsm. I explained everything in detail so it's noob-friendly too hehe . This tutorial took me a long time to make so I hope I get a lot of positive feedback . Tell me what you think about this tutorial. Thanks

Hurray! - everyone will run out at get 3DSMax, and we'll end up with deviantart full of randomized 3D spheres!

Ok, so enough complaining out of me.

nice tutorial, sorry, i'm feeling silly...

it's funny how no matter what number options are available we humans will make a choice from the 20 we see, and not see the 500 others...

yeah, it's 3dsmax, it's not me really, - there would be probably 10 different unique ways to do that with 3dsmax, i would be using noise as a material - and then i'd have bump map of the same thing... - i think it would be quicker than a reference map at render - although maybe not as 'realistic'.

So where and how does one get the 3Dsm program? I've always wanted a good 3D program and this looks like one of the best I've seen.

I was wrong. My n00bishness is where a lot my errors/oversights came from. I overlooked most of the things I mentioned. You've done a very good job of explaining how to make asteroids. I found a moon map at 3D Cafe and used it to create a moon from a sphere; I did all this using your tutorial. I then used another tutorial for animation and animated my very first avi. It's nothing more than a very simple looking moon moving across the default grayish background, but I'm proud of it! (I've made better gifs with gimp, but this was ten times faster and I really enjoyed it) Thanks for the tutorial. I have to admit though I'm still ignorant to whether or not more filters are considered noise filters. Is there just the one "noise" filter? Am I that much of a n00b that I'm the only one to overlook the small things? Should I better explain where the things are that I couldn't find? E.g., like on Step 5 you need to have the create tab (the one with the mouse cursor icon) selected in order to see and select the lights icon (the one with the Flashlight/Torch icon). Another thing was on Step 3 when you told us to return to the main material editing window I had to select default from the drop down menu before I was able to see the map button again. After getting back to the map button and going through your steps of selecting the map again and setting the bump to 100 I had to go to the Material menu at the top and click Assign to Selection before I was able to see it (like you pictured it) in the perspective view. I suspect this may have something to do with the version differences but just the same, let us know. I don't have an animation button, on mine its called auto key and set key so I'm sure a lot of these are version differences, I dun no. Thanks for your tutorial!

PS.
It's 4:50 am Est. Mon and I'm still up from when I installed some of my new software, the new will not where off 'til I pass out, I think I may go get the Everclear. Please forgive any consistent inconsistency I'm delirious, tired, and a dropout.
PSS.
If I'm not passed out I'll come back tell you how much I love you for making this tutorial after I've had my Everclear.

I realize this tutorial was for beginners and such a noob as myself should have made it through very easily however to start. the noise modifier, it seemed to this noob, there was only one. I was under the impression that there is a group of noise mods, so I was a little confused when I only found one that said "noise". After much deliberation with my ignorance I chose "noise" and moved on to the next step. Pressing M brought up the Material editor without a problem. I changed the specular and glossiness and then tried to find the letter M beside the word Diffuse, like you've pictured for us above, I could not find it because in 3ds 6 it's just a grey button that a newb won't see so quickly as the guy who knows what he is looking for. Anyways after discovering that my button did not have the portrayed letter M on it I clicked it and proceeded to click on bitmap, all has gone well up to this point. Uhoh, someone has stolen my moon, I had to settle for the next best thing, NMP_Ripples2_512.dds. (Do you know where I can find the space package?) After settling for one of my default packaged maps I moved on to check the bump box, I do not know if your version is different or if I was looking in the wrong places but I never found any bump box to check however I did find the option to set bump at 100, so I did. I found the checkered box with ease and proceded to clone the asteroids I have no idea how many asteroids I cloned before I realized they were being cloned one on top of the other, I closed the program and started over. This time when I got back to cloniong I moved the asteroids one off of the other and settled for four asteroids (or something that looked like balls of bluegreen play-do floating in space). After discovering how to move them around (still very awkward to this n00b) I posistioned them where I wanted them at and moved on to the next step of lighting them. Once again I believe the interface for 6 and the one you're on must be different because I had to go to the Create Menu, Lights, Standard Lights, and then chose Omni from there. Afterwards, I found the Light Lister over on my tools drop down, I played with the light colors and decay a little bit then finally realized that no matter how good I lighted or darkened it it still looked like crap without that moon map. I rendered it (when you click render you have to click the renderer tab of the render menu before you can change to cat-man-du). Anyways, yours has turned out to be the best tutorial I've been able to find on a n00bs level. As soon as I figure out how to show you my finished work I will. Thanks for the tut. Please stick to the menus at the top (as permissible) of 3ds in the future, I don't think they've changed those as much as they have the quick buttons. Just a suggestion. Thanks just the same!

Thanks for writing this detailed reply. I will try to explain where everything is more next time. I'll also use the top menu bar. I'm very glad you liked my tutorial. I'd love to see your render!

Detail is key. I'll try to be a little more concise next time. I appreciate your courtesy. Deviant is something I think I'm going to grow to like, especially if people are like you. Ciao for now.

time to try it out
sure Ive got an older version, lol, but hey, if it works, why not, I stil lneed to learn modeling techniques as well, so I can start making something decent rather than the dime a dozen abstracts that everyone does now

Wow, that's really great. Asteroids is one of the things I struggle with when creating space scapes so I've avoided them...until now that is . I was wondering if you could let me know where I can download this program (if that's not illegal hehe) and also if you knew how to make larger, more detailed asteroids like shirosynth does?
Thanks again for the tutorial, I'll definitely put it into use soon .
