Description This idea came to me out of nowhere. Most of the time, you see asteroids as a destructive force. Why not the opposite? What if a civilization tamed one of these beasts and used it as a vessel to travel around a system? Clearly fantastical, but I wanted a believable depiction.

Everything is as i want it to be. Not too busy, and focal points aren't too close to each other. There are more things, but nitpicks from my part, even though there arent as many here as I have for my other sci-fi works.

Asteroid, city, and planets done in 3D Studio Max, final composing in Photoshop, which you can see in the walkthrough

Holy crap. I thought you stole this idea from The Beast Below, a 2010 Doctor Who episode, but, after looking at the date of this image, I'm starting to think someone stole the idea from you.

hey, very original, I saw this image time ago, the asteroid came out very well and the light of the background only helps the picture, good work.

The idea makes total sense to me. As long as you can seal the holes you make in it you have one sturdy hull. I'd imagine it would be kinda like living on mars, as shown in Total Recall. Many asteriods can be miles in size, so carving out room for agriculture, housing and various other needs shouldn;t be a problem as long as the population dosen't get too big. I would guess that they would recolonize a larger asteroid with the whole population or more likely sending half the pop. to another similar asteroid. As for propulsion, well, you could go with a reactor of some sorts or perhaps more eco friendly solar sails. Even though a reactor puts out a fraction of the radiation already in space. Completly plausible.

Oh, and awesome job! I love it!

ya know, thats actuly a good engineering idea, it would take so much time to travel across the univers, that a city with everything needed for mankind to live (trees for oxygen, farms for produce and meat, comunities and a functioning society with weather and all) would actuly be a good idea for a space project.

hmm... what about nuclear exposions to propell it, kinda the way that they where thinking about using for a mission to mars?

Dthclaw In reply to ClawOfClanWolf [2008-04-02 21:49:10 +0000 UTC]

Unfortunately, the Orion drive concept has been determined to be unfeasible (mostly due to the quantity of nukes and shielding required). The amount of propulsion provided by your typical fusion device is substantially less than the mass of the starship and its nuclear payload. A nuclear magnetohydrodynamic torch engine, however, would be quite useful for such a vessel.

However, using hollowed planetoids as space habitats has been a staple of science-fiction and long-term space exploration concepts for quite some time. Although I do not believe I have ever seen the concept rendered visually with this much attractiveness before.

Red isn't my favourite colour to be honest. But i'm not letting that opinion of mine get in the way of this. Great work

Wow, I wasnt expecting a comment from you at all! I was glad to see your name in my message center

I have this one hanging in the space between a window and the ceiling. I used to have many space stuff in my room but then i got tired of them. Now I have a bunch of design stuff and the Three Stooges.

After I get done with some work, I plan on doing some more stuff to fill up empty walls.

So, how are you?

Good to hear you're doing well! As for myself, well I'm enjoying my last few days as a free man! I'll be starting my first job as a graphic designer on Monday. We'll see how that goes. Not the job I had in mind or wanted, but what have I got to lose at this point? Not a lot.

Nice painting, the colors give it a misterious, kind of epic atmosphere, a detailed view of the asteroid, with lots of focal points and with the same colors, should be very sweet.
Is the sun going into supernova? Well, if it is, then its no wonder why they're getting the hell out of there, je, je...
Also, they're is not going to be too much asteroid to stand in, if it keeps dropping material like that! Yeah, shure, no air in space, the dust and debris follow the rock instead of being left behind it, like airplanes.... But still! living in an asteroid that decays progessively doesn't sound like a very smart idea...

this is very cool. i love the fantasy sci-fi feel to it. the trailing fumes behind make it look like everyone in the city got waaaasted. city's got some serious red-eye! anyway i think the only thing that's bugging me is that the huge bright thing is dead centre, and drags the eye there. compositionally it seems a bit overpowering to be so close to the city, which is really what you want people to look at.
