Description
I spent 25 minutes on the Can today! This was for a CG-nation speed modeling challenge, the subject was trash can and this is what I did. Rendering took the longest time because the wire mesh was completely modeled, not textured... So with Final Gathering it took about an hour. I think it's gonna get me a win, but we'll see
EDIT:
I won!

awesome render, great modeling. how you did it. you should write a tutorial on it.

Thank you I will work on a quick tutorial later. The biggest help was good selection tools.

Thats pretty nice, I woulda tried a procutter if I had tried to do this but I doubt it would have come out great.

Does it have a fresnel on it? Are the reflections blurred at all?

No, not at all. That probably woulda kicked up the render time a bit more.

Nice mate, I was going to ask how you managed the grate, but I read your explanation above. I hadn't thought about beveling the points to make the diamond shape. Good call!
Looks nice

Thanks Yeah I had another technique that worked pretty quickly in Anim8or but it didn't work in XSI, then I tried the bevel thing before giving up. Otherwise it woulda been a pain in the ass... I should mention that with careful edge-selection I reinforced the edges of the wire, otherwise when subdivided it wouldn't look nearly as sharp.

Haha yeah of course. In anim8or the edge selection would definitely suck.
I guess one way you could do it in anim8or is creating a flat panel then using a bend modifier or something... but that still takes more time.

Did you use an opacity map to make the grate?

Nope! No textures at all What I roughly did was make a cylinder, with 64 divisions (along U) and 14 divisions (along V)... Then I selected the points on the cylinder, beveled them to create a diamond shape, then selected those edges and beveled those to make the the initial grate. After that I did some more edge selection (only along the ones that intersected each-other after being beveled) and selected the adjacent polygons... Which basically selected the polygons that would be the grate. I went to invert selection to pick the polygons that would be the holes in in the grates, extruded them inwards and deleted the left over polygons.
It sounds more complicated than it is But after a couple of tries it was pretty simple.

Nice. What was the poly count on it?

59,768 polygons before being subdivided twice, and there's three meshes total (the grate, the brown can inside it, and the lighter-colored lid on top the grate)

Do you just model for the heck of it or are you going to school to use it?

Currently I just model for the heck of it, I guess. I'm not sure if I'm gonna go to school but I definitely want to build a portfolio and get my name out there, getting something in freelancing at least; if not an actual studio. I'm self taught. What about yourself?

I'm going to the art institute of pittsburgh for game art and design so I do a good deal of modeling. Right now I'm waiting for freaking UPS to deliver my copy of 3ds max

Nice... It's always frustrating when you have to wait for a delivery. I envy you for being able to go to the Art Institute, I'd like to attend the Art Institute of Chicago someday.

It's a lot of loans. . . I'd thought about AI Chicago but decided to go to AIP. The program keeps you busy though
