Cover art for folk rock band The Revellers’ second album “Skeletons”.

I was asked to put together a piece of art that illustrated the title theme, and also brought in the character of Gurthrum the Dane who is the focus of The Reveller's most popular song "Lower the Rope”

The thousand year old story still told in Shetland of Guthrum who was a pirate describes how led a terrible attack on the people of Unst, the northern most Isle in Shetland. Â He then lost his men and boat in a terrible storm and was forced to take shelter in a cave in the cliffs of Unst. When the locals discovered him they formulated a plan to climb down the cliffs and take Guthrom back to the village and punish him for his cruelty and destruction. They would perform the most terrible torturous ceremonial execution known as “the blood eagle” upon him at dawn. One local girl could no longer stand the bloodshed and in the middle of the night she lowered a rope over the cliff so that Guthrum could climb up and escape.

Years went by and Guthrum never forgot the kindness of that girl. When she was grown up he returned to the isle and this time instead of dealing out death he gave her a horde of gold as a thank you and an apology.
I wanted to make the painting undeniably about the revellers by also incorporating their original ram skull logo by Shetland artist Sheila Johnson. And also have a nod to each of the 7 members of the band by painting in their instruments.
