Description The Guardians of the Soviet skies. Mig-25 Foxbat fending off a spying SR-71. This image is merely symbolic and I only tried to capture a glimpse of the fascinating tales of the Cold War era. I hope you like it. Let me know how you find it.

Ok, just a quick note, I have been getting comments saying that Soviet jets never had shark-mouths painted on them, because it was against their regulations, well I did my research before adding the mouth and here is the link for a USSR mig (bakcfire) with a similar shark mouth: combatace.com/uploads/monthly_…

As a retired USAF Technical Sgt I find this image spine tingling! A Mig 25 could and did reach mach 3. That is of course with all the engine safety equipment bypassed or disabled. And then the airframe and engines would be condemned. Trashed. Those were recon birds over the Middle East in the 70's.
I read "Mig Pilot" with fascination, how the Soviet system worked, trained its pilots, treated them, and a look into everyday Soviet life. Not good.
Anyway, after a 20 year career I never once got to see a Blackbird in flight... darn it.

Love the artwork Distantstarr!  I kinda have to giggle a bit....my father was best of friends with a man who was a big part of the Skunk Works as an engineer with this aircraft.  When I was young, he told me (because I am a HUGE airplane nerd and always asked him about the plane), that they never could figure out how fast the aircraft was.  Back then, they still didn't know what would happen under normal atmospheric conditions as the aircraft broke another Mach number.  But every time the Soviets retook the speed record...they'd put the Sled back in the air and open it up just a little more.  He told me personally they knew the aircraft was capable of Mach 6+.  But another impressive piece from your talented hands.  Nice job.

Mig 25 going past mach 3 would be extremely difficult. At that speed the mig would destroy itself. Its air frame, engines and the like just weren't built to reach that speed.

I appreciate your comment and sharing your experience thor1151 as you know the pic is symbolic, and the SR is high above and climbing.

Awesome and yes a plane must have a shark mouth! If I get my own plane it will have a shark mouth or a cool sign on it

As I know actually,Mig-25 may can not do this.
But,Mig-31 can .
In January 31st 1986,six Mig-31 "Foxhood"s have tracked and almost shot down a SR-71 with R-33 AAMs they took with them in Russian's airspace.
Mig-31s' altitude was 65 676 feet when they found the SR-71"blackbird" at 52 000 feet.
They locked the "blackbird" on and followed it,but didn'd fire eventually.
To be honest I really love those giant aircrafts made by Russans.
Nice work again!

blakk In reply to Distantstarr [2015-03-22 22:50:44 +0000 UTC]

as I`ve said- good science fiction...
first of all, SR-71 was retired in 1989, while Mig-31 was introduced in 1981, so 8 years its kinda not a "few years"
secondly, same speed and altitude it is not only thing you need to intercept a plane, you can look for soviet AA missiles data on Internet, maximum lock distance and minimum launch distance for R-33 would expire in less than 3 seconds in case of "head on" intercept of SR-71
also, maximum speed of target for R-33 was 3000 km/h that is less than 3500 km/h for SR-71
so Mig has very small window of opportunity to intercept SR-71. mostly by luck , than practice...
As for "intercepts" of SR-71 over baltics, some facts are messed up in this article...
Sweden AF pilots knew routes of SR-71 and used them for practice during their home run from USSR border, locking their missiles on blackbirds for fun...

back in the late 70's,  the north Koreans tried to shoot down an SR-71.  the missile hit mach 5.  the beast out ran it a caught the missile's launch, flight and fallout with it's aft camera's.

Soviets NEVER used such painting (tooty maws, etc) on a planes.

it was against regulations.

p.s. engritch not my strong point, not speaker and lousy writer. (although readin and understand not bad).

yup, politruk. political officer. nasty creatures..... especially if you give him reason bugger your brain.

(painting shark tooty grin on nose your MiG give him exellent reason).

my engritch lame, sory...
