Thank you, BTW so to my understanding the story is going to be about how this poor urchin merman got chained, is that correct?
π: 0 β©: 1
DizzyAlyx In reply to puzzle1022 [2017-06-11 21:02:05 +0000 UTC]
That is correct! People really took a shine to him and convinced me to do more with him ^^ The comic will be telling the context of that picture and how he ended up that way

puzzle1022 In reply to DizzyAlyx [2017-06-11 21:06:50 +0000 UTC]
Will he ever be freed or will he chained like that for the rest of his miserable life? And how long has he been like that?
You've got me interested. Looking forward 2 future pages.

DizzyAlyx In reply to puzzle1022 [2017-06-11 21:11:54 +0000 UTC]
Well without being too spoiler-y, this drawing that we're commenting on is him as a child, and since this is not his present age, it's quite safe to assume a number of years have passed since the chain was put on him.
As for if he'll be like that the rest of his life, you'll have to wait for the comic to tell you :}

Sorry to keep asking these questions, but is the shackle magical so that it may alter its size slightly as his arm grows?
π: 0 β©: 1
DizzyAlyx In reply to puzzle1022 [2017-06-11 21:22:20 +0000 UTC]
It's not magical, no. If you look closely you can see that it's actually slowly killing his hand. You can especially see it in this picture: That's Disgusting , and this one: What Do You Want? (+ Speedcolour)
It fit him when he was younger, but as he grew it deformed and crippled his left hand. It's off-colour and he can't open it from a fist. It's slowly forming necrosis, and I cannot begin to imagine how painful it must be.
You're quite welcome to ask questions if you have them ^^ I dont mind

puzzle1022 In reply to DizzyAlyx [2017-06-11 21:44:57 +0000 UTC]
Yikes!!! I didn't even notice the off color of his hand in those pictures. Poor guy This might make removing the shackle (if it can be removed) even more dangerous because it might be possible that a blood clot has formed in his hand and wrist, and removing the shackle and chain could dislodge the clot which could travel through his blood stream and can cause a fatal stroke or heart attack.Β Β Β
But don't take it from me, Β i'm no doctor and my medical knowledge is limitedΒ Β

DizzyAlyx In reply to puzzle1022 [2017-06-11 21:55:48 +0000 UTC]
That's absolutely right! removing it could be quite dangerous. He's practically stuck, the other option is to cut his hand off, but that deep underwater, this would probably cause him to bleed to death. He's essentially trapped there as the necrosis slowly kills him :c Who knows what he will do, it's not looking good for him!

I'm been thinking about what you said about how his only option would be to amputate his hand. Been doing some Β research into medical procedures that involve amputation and how to make it more safe.
He would need some fellow sympathetic merpeople to help him with all of this.Β
Cauterization:Β
Cauterization is the process in which a red hot metal is pressed against the wound, killing infection and causing the wound to seal itself slightly and prevent massive bleeding. This was in fact an old fashioned way of closing amputations. This would need to be done as soon as the limb was amputated. The cost would be massive tissue damage.
However if your poor merman is in deep waters where the waters are very cold, it might be difficult to get a red hot iron down there without the cold waters cooling it to an unusable temperature, and that's assuming that merpeople could somehow heat up the metal to the appropriate temperature in the ocean. They could use underwater volcanoes to heat it up, possibly.

Tourniquet:
A Tourniquet is where one would take a piece of fabric or rope/cord or medical tubing and wrap it tightly with a stick or piece of wood around the upper arm close to the shoulder and thereby blocking blood flow to the rest of the arm. This is only used as a last resort if all other safety measures fail because it could cause the tissue below the Tourniquet to die due to lack of blood.

What do you think?Β Β

DizzyAlyx In reply to puzzle1022 [2017-06-12 01:06:58 +0000 UTC]
I think thats some fantastic logic! I've been pondering myself about how he could possibly have a happy ending, and it would only be when he gets that chain off. But how would he?
I think pretty much the only option he has is to get help from someone else, and even then it'll be quite the task to get him out. Not impossible, though. There could be hope for him yet. But the simplest bit is also the hardest, he needs to find someone to help him, when he can't actually go out and find them.
Interesting!

puzzle1022 In reply to DizzyAlyx [2017-06-12 01:24:03 +0000 UTC]
Glad I was able to help.
Hopefully you can find a way to free him without amputation and to somehow stop the blood clot. Even if he can't be freed you should find some way to at least end his suffering and heal his deformed hand.
If I were writing this then I would probably have it so that his hand and wrist are healed by magic and IF the shackle can NEVER be removed, magically or otherwise, at least put an enchantment on it so that it now fits his grown hand and wrist; if he is doomed to be stuck there at least there will be no more discomfort or suffering. But unfortunately that would mean that he would never know freedom again.Β

It would be quite the tragedy indeed Maybe those merpeople who helped him can visit him often so he won't be so lonely. But that's only if they can't remove the shackle. Man we're having quite the discussion. Let me know when you want to Stop.

One might say he isn't really a people person. He has quite the dislike for his own kind, since theyre the reason he's there in the first place. he does have the "Tamer" ability though! Merfolk Lesson 03: Abilities
I think the most company he'll get is other animals :')
