The young stallion galloped on into the cold unknown. The two stallions his sire had sent after him finally slowed and turned to head back. Sviess was alone, a failure to everyone he had ever cared about.

His sire would take the herd and Dusk would either be killed or banished along with the other stallions of his band. The mares that had lived with them would be distributed among the young stallions that followed Sviess's father into battle. Juin and her dam would likely be taken by his sire and Noel's unborn foal killed the moment it hit the earth.

Sviess crested the next hill, lightening bringing the stormy night to life. No rain fell, nor did tears. In the last few months, he had become utterly numb to everything. Everything but Juin. He clenched his teeth at the thought of losing her; of his sire forcing her into foal and of the sibling that would result. He blinked back the sting that came with tears.

He had disappointed his father by not joining the raid on Dusk's herd, but he hadn't felt it. What he did feel was the pain of loss. He would never make the journey to Dusk's vale before his sire. Slowly, he turned and walked back the way he had come, never even feeling the rain that began to fall to his back. The wind whipped his mane and tail, calling him home.
