Very odd, seeing as he showed up in 'Three's a Crowd'. He was most likely an Easter egg for fans who saw the movie, but it does show that tweets as evidence aren't all that reliable. At this point, I'd have to side with the consensus of EQD, ( www.equestriadaily.com/2013/08⦠) and TV tropes ( tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php⦠), and call it somewhere between "separate", and "up in the air".
However, after giving the subject more thought, I've come to the realization that I can't say what sparked this is wrong. Within the story of the movie, he DID announce Twilight's arrival to the Empire, just as you pointed out. so he WOULD in fact know her name. The Flash Sentry who appeared at the train station is the problem. Easter egg or not, he was still there. If the movie and show are supposed to be separate entities, that would mean this Flash character never even met Twilight till that one brief moment. In a very disturbing way, he both does and does not know Twilight. :/

I think McCarthy is talking about being a character as in "having a talking role/doing something of note." Him just standing there and giving a smirk doesn't really apply.Β
For now, at least until the next EQG comes out, the best way to look at it is semi-filler, where the events have an effect in the immediate story line, but then are either forgotten or never discussed again. In all technicality they did happen, but whatever effect they would have had (i.e. FlashLight, mirror world being reopened) just didn't happen. But if Twilight and Flash show up within one pony of each other in the same frame... well it's all fair game.Β

The animators put him in as a nod. I'm sure she didn't know they were going to do that at the time. But who are we to say what is and isn't going to happen in the future? We'll just have to see what they do

Of course that doesn't stop those. But they aren't part of the question. Read Tech's original post, he's talking from within the context of the show by itself. If fanfiction, headcanon, or the spinoff were being taken into account, there wouldn't be any debate. It would be a matter of preference.

Granted, my original post doesn't make much sense in this context. But I feel this is going to be one of those things that builds up in fanon, and writers have given us tons of nods to fanon in the show, which in a sense canonizes it. So, it may not be a thing quite yet, but I could see this becoming a thing soon. I mean, they already put him in, and there's a good chance that was before they got any reaction of EQG, so I wouldn't be surprised if we saw him any time we're in the Crystal Kingdom.Β
