Did you know that I like Castlevania? I’m more interested in the Metroidvania versions that were released after Symphony of the Night (that game included), but I still love the series. I love its music for the most part, and all of them have amazing soundtracks. My favorite games are Aria of Sorrow and Order of Ecclesia.
But that’s for another day.
So I came up with recreating some levels from Castlevania (the games prior to Symphony) in the original Mario Maker. They were fun to make, and they got a lot of favorites, but I wanted to make more. Once I got my hands on the sequel, I rebuilt them, making them better than before, and adding a few more to the lineup. I then decided artwork based on these levels had to be done. Remember how I drew Mario training to become the Avatar to showcase my Avatar themed levels? I wanted to do it again, only this time Mario had to pose like a Belmont, and wield their iconic weapon, the legendary Vampire Killer.
But wait, Mario isn’t related to the Belmonts. Shouldn’t the whip kill him later?
Ordinarily yes, but this whip is one I made for him.
I borrowed the Vampire Killer long enough to study it. I had no intention of using it. What is it made of? How does it deal so much damage to undead enemies? How does it know when it’s being used by a Belmont or anyone else? Why can’t non-Belmonts use it?
It turns out the whip carries the soul of Sara Trantoul, who had been cursed to become a vampire, but sacrificed herself to unlock the whip’s full power, giving it the ability to inflict serious damage to vampires, as well as any demon. Sara’s betrothed, Leon Belmont, was the first Belmont to use the whip after this upgrade, and swore that his descendants would carry on his work to banish evil (usually Dracula) until the end of time, with the whip being passed down to them. Should a non-Belmont wield it, using it for too long will cause the whip to drain your life force until it kills you. To prevent this, one would have to defeat the spirit of the whip’s previous owner to wield it safely.
I made a replica out of the purest silver, knowing its value in fighting certain evil beings, and got some alchemists to give it a taste for undead beings. It became the Vampire Killer in all but name, and it was safe to wield by anyone, Belmont or not. I decided to name it Dusk Breaker. I tested it out alongside some other weapons against undead enemies, and the whip did exactly as I wanted.
I gave it to Mario and got him to pose with it, recreating Simon Belmont’s pose for his artwork for Super Smash Bros Ultimate. This was my intent all along. I did change the spiked mace at the end of the whip, giving it the Platinum Tip from Harmony of Dissonance, which is the strongest attachment you can put on the whip. I also gave the whip rounded chain links instead of square ones. I have a circle template, and I wanted to put it to good use. It is the Vampire Killer in all but name.
Want to try out my Castlevania inspired levels? If you would like to be the morning sun to vanquish the horrible night, here are the codes:
Approaching the castle: C85-8SM-L9G
This level is a recreation of Stage 5 of Super Castlevania 4, the stage right before you make it to the castle. From here, the game stops going easy on you. Tread cautiously when you get to the sub-area. It’s very dark, and something might find you unexpectedly.
Dracula’s Castle: 3V4-NYF-1MG
This level I had uploaded previously, but this one has been tweaked a little. More traps have been added. It’s still the first level from the original Castlevania. Bring the light of the morning sun and vanquish the horrible night!
The Clock Tower: 9RW-7ND-WDF
What’s with Dracula’s castle always having a clock tower? Is that in his contract or something? Whatever the case, this level is based on the clock tower from Super Castlevania 4. The vertical sections have rising lava, so don’t dawdle! Grab the big coins at your own risk.

sounds better than Count Koopula, despite it being my inspiration for the picture where they fight.
