Description Massive thanks to for making the spiffy title remix!

If I could get a small group together, I would so definitely, positively remake a HD version of SMB3. To me, All-Stars didn't do it justice. Super Mario Advance 4 was pretty decent enough, but I want a version that captures the true spirit and flare of the original, oh well.

Anyway, a little while ago it occurred to me that in the [original title screen] has a lot of pauses and inactivity between the actions (like, why does the Goomba drop down then just stand there for a bit...?), leaving me wondering how I would fill the gaps. So after two weeks of animating, I now know!

This made my day.

If I could be bothered to find a reliable programmer, pressing 1 PLAYER GAME would work (and the animation would look closer to this [link] style too).

Pipe dreams~

I... I just can't stop watching it! This is some really good animation you've got there, everything is alive and there for a reason.

My only complaint would be that some of the actions the brothers make at the beginning seem a bit last, and we don't see them for very long (especially Luigi) but it's a minor detail that doesn't take away from the whole thing.

Once again, good work!

DogmanSP In reply to TheBourgyman [2012-04-30 22:20:30 +0000 UTC]

Thanks man, what annoys me more than anything in animation, is motionless, static characters simply waiting for their cue to do something (Family Guy springs to mind). I had it in my head that as the curtain rises, the brothers quickly ready themselves before the "show", all the while I was trying to be as faithfull to the original intro in terms to timing. It gets out of sync when Mario is hit by the shell, but whatever!

Deviantart really needs an edit button!

I love this! I always used to watch that title screen animation as a kid, it would fascinate me.

Speaking of SMB3, NSMB2 was announced and it's bearing a lot of similarity to the perfection that is SMB3. Any thoughts regarding the game? I was initially disappointed, but seeing some speculation I'm getting a bit hyped. I just want a lot of new (it's in the title, after all), rather than a blend of old.

DogmanSP In reply to Mchaosg [2012-04-30 21:58:53 +0000 UTC]

I'm looking forward to it, but that goes without saying!

The fact they intend to sell this both physically and digitally is fairly interesting. Not just for the Mario series, but for anything Nintendo. And having Raccoon Mario means we should have more vertical stages, which is what I felt held back the other NSMB games, making them feel too linear. It was either all horizontal or all vertical, rarely if ever, both.

What puts me off (a little, not much!) is their overzealous use of SMB3 and SMW assets in the newer games. This makes it the third time the Super Leaf will appear on the 3DS (so many 3's...), I'd like them to create a new theme/mechanic for this game. The reason people love SMB3 isn't just because of raccoons and Tanooki's, it's the whole game as an experience. It expanded concepts from the original SMB. I'm hoping this game tries branching out as well.

Saying all that though, we'll just have to stay vigilant until more info appears (I'd love to see a level editor)!

Mchaosg In reply to DogmanSP [2012-05-01 01:27:47 +0000 UTC]

I agree with everything, I felt NSMB was a better experience than NSMBWii in regards of design and exploration. There was better powerups and it was a brand new take on the original SMB. The Wii sequel took everything and washed it out, putting a rushed coat of SMB3/SMW over it. It had some good points, like multiplayer (though I can argue it hurt the level design) but a lot of "meh" as well. If NSMB2 had multiplayer like they were planning with it's prequel, it will be quite the experience in that department.

I grew up with SMB3 and it's my favorite Mario game ever, so I eat anything up about it. It was an immerse and unique world growing up, I've been yearning for that experience again ever since. Vertical stages help, that means expanded level design. Now they just need new power ups for us to play with (how about that Gold Mario? I hope that's a power up), new enemies to discover and new bosses to battle! That will make it a big winner. and a rockin' soundtrack

DogmanSP In reply to Mchaosg [2012-05-01 11:33:18 +0000 UTC]

I'm really hoping that Gold Mario isn't just this version of the starman power up, that's probably my biggest worry.

In one screen shot the enemies all have the same gold look (Koopas and Piranha Plants I think), and immediately thought it could've been a don't-touch-the-enemies challenge, similar to the Daredevil Comets in the Galaxy games. It could even be the Super Guide mode (gold enemies for good players, gold Mario for not so good players). As long it's different, I'll be happy.

Mchaosg In reply to DogmanSP [2012-05-01 20:07:37 +0000 UTC]

I was speculating that it would be like a temporary "you found me, get some 1ups" power, turning enemies into gold coins or something. But your theories are interesting too.

I want something different too, that would make me very happy.

Oh I like that angle much better, like a better version of red coins. Nintendo does have a habit of throwing curveballs every now and then, so it could be something far more outlandish, roll on August!

Seriously, if I could get some or even just one trustworthy programmer, I'd be making this right now! But after the problems Sonic The Hedgehog 2 HD project had [link] I'm a bit dubious...

DogmanSP In reply to Scorpiontail [2012-04-30 22:06:56 +0000 UTC]

No, it completely sucks, sounds like the programmer started dictating the rest of the group how to run the project, then ran off with the source code. It had so much potential...

This is absolutely brilliant! You've injected so much personality into the original intro - pointing out all my favourite additions would probably take several paragraphs. Gosh, even the 3's shadow waggles its tail: love it!

Now you've got me craving an HD remake of SMB3 with hand-drawn sprites. Great work!

You and me both, a HD version would sell like crazy if Nintendo made it, hell, even the original SMB HD would be awesome! Shame that seems unlikely to happen.
