Description
I have seen loads of tutorials showing you how to boil & blowdry synthetic dreads... Boiling is hard & painful & blowdrying them makes dreads go crunchy! This tutorial shows you how I make my synthetic single ended dreads for falls & wigs, by steaming them with an iron, since we don't all own a steamer!
I've been making these for years & they turn out really well, it takes patience & time, but the result is worth it!
You can buy Kanekalon Jumbo Braid from Ebay or any, I guess, hair shop! Afro caribbean beauty stores sell this stuff... Always go for the Jumbo braid though, as some synthetic hair doesn't seal!
I live in England, Derby, I get mine from Sims Hair & Beauty in the Eagle Market. It's really cheap, only ยฃ2.50 per pack, but I KNOW you can get it cheaper than that!
Please see my Roving Dreads Tutorial too!

Depends, You can get 4 to 6 out of one bag or close to 8. It also depends on how big you want them.

Sorry to jump in but you need to use 100% kanekalon hair as it seals in hot water/steam

I was wondering, I've been doing dreads for all of...a day xD
I've made a few transitional dreads but I don't think I'm getting the concept (I can't make a regular one to save my life)
It just seems that instead of fluffing, all the hair wants to do is tangle (and not in the good way). I've tried a comb and a pet brush and I'm not getting it to do what I want. It just doesn't frizz out it keeps looping into itself :/
What is going on?

You could get it done perfessionally or something? I know you can braid the synthetic ones into your hair, but I dont know how that works when you already have natural ones. . .

Do you happen to know how one would go about making a dread wig?
I know that a bunch of dreads can get kind of heavy, and the usual wig thread cap wouldn't be strong enough to support an entire bunch of dreads, let alone holding it secure to someone's head!
Just wondering. I've been asking around, and I think I may need to play this by ear. I would very much appreciate your input!

Really great tutorial, better than any videos on youtube that I've seen before. Can I have question? There are two kinds of kanekalon - 100% kanekalon called "kanekalon braid" and that one you have used - kanekalon jumbo braid. Why is this kanekalon better than the other - or why do you use this one? I mean - I though, that 100% kanekalon is better (it's longer and it don't shining). Please, excuse my horrible english

This is a great tutorial, I never realised this process would be so easy either. Ive been thinking about getting synthetic dreads for years now, It was just the VERY expensive prie of buying ready mades that put me off.
I had also looked into making my own but like you said, all I found was how to use a steamer of blowdry which was rtaher annoying.
Thnaks for the tutorial . Maybe ill try make my own now

Hi, sorry it's a late reply, you can buy from african hair shops, look on your local market.. The roving, i'm not sure, I get mine from ebay. Just type in roving as a search.

Yeah, just make the same way you would, but with wool it's the same for any material really...

I make ones with syntetic hair that resist heat, not kanekalon, but I notice they don't keep twisted, I'll try using kanekalon.

dolly-dementia In reply to YamiHerzeleid [2009-11-08 18:00:18 +0000 UTC]
Hi, some synth hair doesn't hold the style once you've steamed it, it's the really cheap stuff like kanekalon that keeps its shape after steaming, i found that steaming them really does keep the dread shape... If you wear them a lot then you may have to re-steam them occasionally..
