Description Saw Trey's youtube video about the cryptid Mothman yesterday evening: www.youtube.com/watch?v=6w07gB…
Didn't have anything else to do and hadn't drawn in a few days so...

Giant false bat - Pseudochiroptera giganteus

Not a moth. Not a man. And also not an owl. Not even a bird.
Turns out Mothman is a mammal and quite an unusual one. It's closely related to bats and shares a lot of features with them. The biggest difference however is that it lacks echolocation and is a biped when not in the air.
Their behaviour however is more similar to an owl: this animal sits most of the time on high spots such as branches from where it can search for prey. They use their huge eyes and mask on their face to locate them and when that's done, they simply glide or fly soundlessly towards their victim to catch it with their feet. The teeth are then used to deliver the fatal bite.
On the ground they have to be careful though: they are light build because of the hollow bones and slow because of their extremely long legs connected to each other by a membrane. A cougar, wolf or even coyote can kill them if they aren't scared off by the huge wings. The giant false bat can take of fast though because it uses the same squad launch as its cousins. They feel the most comfortable in trees or cliffs where they can climb around without having to touch the ground that often.

When encountering a wild Mothman one has not to feel treathened at all. Yes, they are big, but they only hunt small prey. The biggest recorded catch so far was a fox, but the usual prey isn't bigger than a hare. Besides, with their huge eyes and excellent hearing they have spotted you long before you see them and they will hide or pull their wings over their face in an attempt to camouflage. One has to be careful though if there are pups around: the mother, who takes care of the one or two young alone, will try to chase of predators that come to close. This happened sometimes with people in their car driving through the woods. The pups were probably nearby on the ground or trees. They can't fly and are therefore very vulnerable if it wasn't for their excellent camouflage. However, the mother won't take any risks.
The earliest sightings caused the idea that Mothman didn't have a head and its eyes were simply placed on the chest region, but that's not true: the natural stance of the giant false bat is an upright position with a lowered head and raised wings.

Obviously, giant false bats are nocturnal and come rarely close to civilisation. You'll have to do your very best to spot one, but if you're in ones territory, camera traps are a good help. They also seem to be attracted by the noise of rattling keys, but that's not properly investigated yet.

I would make those actually non-related. Just a bunch of convergent sentient species.

what type of mammal would this mothman be if it's not a bat??

As the description says: a close relative of them. Their ancestors split up right before true bats evolved.

I really enjoy this concept. Is it ok if I feature something similar for my speculative cryptids series?

This is a rather interesting take on the Mothman. It would be interesting to see one if this species is a real one haha.
Also,is it just me or the drawing that had this creature opening its mouth closely resembles this picture of a Pallas Cat with its mouth open?Hahaha

That was not intended, but it just happened to look a lot like a cat. I see it in all drawings actually.

You know, I think I like these cryptids better when they are being natural creatures instead of being what the media wants them to be...namely aggressive creatures who like to kill people (with no real reason).

A little project I been working on has been trying to make them natural (using what we know of modern animals and their habits). It's fun and really makes the media look foolish...I love how I did the Jersey Devil and Chupacabra (who are not just drinkers of blood).

I just wandered about something, is it possible that a pup could accidentally be run over?

Would these be related to the Ahools?

Yeah, that's the fu thig about cryptozoology

Cool, are they on Deviantart?

Yes, that's possible. They have the tendency to start exploring when they are a bit older. It's a bit like owlets do.

Ahool was probably just an oversized flying fox.

I guess Hollywood thinks that having cryptids being normal animals would not make for a good movie, just like I suppose Jurassic Park thought having the dinosaurs eat people would bring in the bucks. I guess it worked, but I hated it and that is why I still don’t like Jurassic park (I prefer documentaries where no human is considered a dino snack).

I'll be honest on this case...I am a chicken.

*shakes head* no, but if you’re curious then I could note you the bios I have so far.

Oh yeah, like how owlets try to fly before they're ready...crash and burn is probably not what they had in mind. Actually kind of refer to this for the Hei-Hei (a winged cat).

*head tilt* maybe...I won't bother with it. The Mothman would be enough of a flying (since most of them are kind of the same creature more or less).

"Normal" is actually already used in Hollywood. Do you know the movie "The Waterhorse"? It's a children movie about the monster of Loch Ness where it's some kind of plesiosaur-ish animal. And nobody gets eaten.

If it's not a lot of text I'd love to read it.

Oh yeah, the opposite of the book Loch (or was it Lock...). Now that was a rather graphic side of Nessie. But this (and something I read yesterday or the day before) has inspired me to give the Loch Ness monster a bio.

I try keeping the bios short, just touching up on some of the basics. Each bio isn't long, but there is a few of them...but it'll be nice to share it with somebody.

Oh and lastly could you give me your thoughts on the Flatwoods Monster? If it existed what do you think it would be?

My thoughts are going towards some sort of large owl, chameleon, and even amphibian XD

Dontknowwhattodraw94 In reply to aGentlemanScientist [2016-01-27 20:49:35 +0000 UTC]

I actually didn't know this one before you mentioned it...

My first thought after reading it wearing a metal armour and such, I thought it was a beautiful prank made of a trash can and other stuff xD
I actually had to think of an amphibian too because of the head. Reminds me of a koolasuchus and the Homo diluvii from All Yesterday's (that giant amphibian discovered in the 1700's of which they thought it was some kind of human species from before the Flood). 3.bp.blogspot.com/-DP9LFK0EIQY…

I decided on salamander, due to the large North American Hellbender living in the region! My speculative theory is that the Flatwoods Monster is a larger cousin of these guys! What do you think?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Dontknowwhattodraw94 In reply to aGentlemanScientist [2016-01-28 18:24:45 +0000 UTC]

That would be a plausible option. I like the idea of its shiny skin being confused with armor.
Maybe it could run on its hind legs like some lizards do?

Dontknowwhattodraw94 In reply to aGentlemanScientist [2016-01-28 18:59:33 +0000 UTC]

Me neither, but thought that would be the only option. What I've read about it is that it was also quite fast, so it made sense if it could run on two legs.
