Description I think there are tutorials about this thing as well, but I was asked this a few times so yeah. ;3;/ This is some simple example.

You don't really need gradient tool to change the colour, just as long as you add the overlay layer it will work when you put colour on it.

or as =Silver-MoonNight stated, "Any program that has Layers feature can do this"

If you use paint bucket you'll only get one colour instead of gradient.

For SAI or other program you have to make the gradient manually I guess. ;v;/ You can use the brush tool to colour the overlay layer.

... and sorry for my English. OTL

Put to scrap later.

-----------------

Edit: Forgot to mention, if you're dealing with a really dark image, try to add a new (white) layer under the image layer and adjust the opacity of the overlay layer and image layer. Hope that works.

If the image appears too light, you can just adjust the 'level' for the image layer to make it darker/clearer.

I did exactly what you said and my picture turned out amazing! But... how do you save the image while keeping the overlayed colours on it? It just keeps saving without the gradient ://

Oh thank you so much
....But I think I'm doing something wrong
When I add color to that layer the whole picture becomes tinted with the gradient color. Not Just the lines as you show.. O__O

Did you set the layer type to "overlay"? It's in step 3.

Johaneybesiata In reply to LilyYamiCross [2011-06-27 22:22:55 +0000 UTC]

yeup that's what I did. but it's still not just the lines.

Maybe it's the transparency?

Johaneybesiata In reply to LilyYamiCross [2011-07-03 20:37:55 +0000 UTC]

It doesn't work

LilyYamiCross In reply to Johaneybesiata [2011-07-04 03:24:40 +0000 UTC]

I guess anything other than the drawing (paper, empty space, etc.) should be transparent...?

Cynical-Narcissist [2011-06-26 08:16:55 +0000 UTC]

that's pretty cool. I didn't even know that you could do that! The only problem this method seems to be giving me is it won't overlay anything that is a complete black. Eh, I'll figure it out

Doodl3zfreaky In reply to Cynical-Narcissist [2011-06-26 08:23:12 +0000 UTC]

... maybe you can try to add a new (white) layer under the image's layer, and adjust the opacity of the overlay-layer and the image-layer?

Doodl3zfreaky In reply to Usagi-Kai [2011-06-25 22:21:09 +0000 UTC]

The paint bucket only works to change the colour of the drawing. If you want to add gradient to it on SAI I guess you'll have to make the gradient manually. ;v;
