Description
While working on this recent commission I had the common sense to remember to photograph all the different stages. GO ME I REMEMBERED SOMETHING.This is how I do hand embroidery, which is somewhat more elaborately than most people would assume.
It is not the "correct" way, nor the only way, but it is what I prefer and what I find gives the best results for my own style.
I hope it is at least vaguely useful.
TO THE NEWBIES
Doing these eyes by hand took less time than if I'd done then by machine. By the time you create the file, stitch it out, correct mistakes, do it again and then do it for the opposite eye, it can be a good two or three hours gone and quite a bit of material wasted. Unless you can afford the badass software to go with a badass machine, I'd recommend any newbies to plushie making to at least give hand embroidery a shot before plunging huge amounts of money into these machines. It's also very relaxing to do it by hand. Just sit, watch your favourite shows, and stitch.

This is very helpful, thank you! I'm trying it with a plush I'm making now. I'm doing the whites of the eyes currently, the first part that I decided to do, and it's a bit messy but nowhere near as messy looking as when I try to stitch printed eyes to the plush, and the effect will probably be far nicer once it's finished and I've filled in the gaps that I invariably have and have gone over all the looser stitched to hold them down.

I'm glad it's proving so helpful! It's very sensible to work in layers, so doing the whites first is the best way to start.
Sewing on printed eyes, though.. I don't think I've ever seen that before... That sounds hella fiddly!

It takes a bit to sew over the looser strands, but I think it looks nicer now that I've gone over it to fill in the gaps.
I read somewhere about using iron on paper to make eyes, but about ironing them onto a piece of cotton to then glue onto the plus so that they wouldn't crack. I don't have good fabric glue so I gave them a rim of the cotton colour and would then sew them on, much like the embroidering method, to fix them to the plush, but it really needs to be done before everything is sewing together and it does look quite messy if any strands come loose. Not an ideal technique by any means. Better if you can appliquΓ© properly.

Wow, that sound's quite complicated!
I tried something similar once, but painting rather than iron-on. It was... okay, but it did eventually crack, so I just gave up and learned to embroider XD
If it works, though, having the eye sort of set back in the head must look pretty cool.
You can iron straight onto the minky if you use a cotton cover, but then the eye is sort of... floating on fur @___@'

You're welcome! I had one, but it broke. I don't think I'll ever replace it, though, it was quite costly to run and keep.

There are lots of brands, all different! Have a good scout around and find which works best for you.

How would you suggest doing eyes like these:Β img3.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20β¦
should I do it the same way as the one here, with a black pupil, black around that, then the purpleish color near the bottom?
π: 0 β©: 1
dot-DOLL In reply to KisaCosplay [2014-09-01 18:48:24 +0000 UTC]
Yes, that's an option!
You could use black fleece (or something soft, anyway) and just not bother embroidering the black. Then just add the highlights and the purple colour onto the black fleece.

which do you think would look better?

dot-DOLL In reply to KisaCosplay [2014-09-02 09:18:27 +0000 UTC]
Prrrrobably the fully embroidered one, but you could always use black fleece, do only the purple first, and see how good or bad it looks, and if it looks bad, add the black before doing the white highlights.

Awesome!!! I love this tutorial and I'm definitely going to give this a try on my next plushie. Thank you soo much!
Just a quick question, I usually use just one thread in my needles when embroidering. Do you suggest using two threads for eyes like this?

dot-DOLL In reply to Franrie [2014-07-06 16:17:57 +0000 UTC]
Thank you! I hope you find it helpful!
I usually use two, just because one takes ages and i get annoyed with it so it ends up messy XD It's just personal preference, there is no right or wrong.

Ohhh my gosh dude, this is SO so pro XD I looove your embroidery work. It's so tight and clean TuT
I always feel like when I try embroidery, I pull the thread too tight and it bunches up, but if I don't pull it tight enough, its all loose and crappy XDD I can never find that balance!
π: 0 β©: 1
dot-DOLL In reply to ThirdPotato [2014-05-20 19:45:41 +0000 UTC]
Thank you very much!
I took a while to find that good tension, but I typically just pull the thread flat against the surface, I don't add any extra force. Sometimes my embroidery works out a little bit of an oval, but I'm getting better at it. For some reason, the fleece base seems to help with tension, maybe because there are less layers to hide all the minky fluff

ThirdPotato In reply to dot-DOLL [2014-05-21 02:19:43 +0000 UTC]
Hm that's interesting. I'd think that fleece'd be harder since it's a little more elastic. But I'll have to give it a try again sometime!

I'll try it soon

You're very welcome!
It takes a go or two to get the hang of the tension more than anything, but once you get it you're more or less limitless. Just try some circles on some scrap fabric first.

You should have a go, it's really fun. And you get a plush out of it XD
I should think most plushes have machine embroidered faces, but it actually isn't that difficult to do by hand, and means you have complete control over it, it just takes some practice.
