Description Full View

I noticed on my recent poll that a majority of people really liked my drawing "Leggy and Ark ". I think it was the most mentioned along with the drawing "Gotcha' ", which honestly with the former was kind of to my surprise.

I drew it quite haphazardly, as I did with many Resident Evil related drawings. While I once had the mentality of "quality over quantity", I lost sight of that during the peak of R.E.Musicals and just wanted to churn stuff out as fast as I thought of it. The original "Leggy and Ark" was no exception. Despite that, the typical fangirl Mary-Sue nature of the relationship, and how I was anatomically uninformed back then, I guess something about this love-hate relationship struck a chord with many people, liking it for their own reasons.

Anyway, being so surprised about that and overwhelmed with how bad the original looked I decided to redraw it. Also though, to show my appreciation to all you guys who have been following me, even from so long ago! I hope it does justice to the original, and I must admit I did it from memory so it's not exactly the same- But I think that would defeat the whole purpose anyway.

For the critique section of this, whoever decides to do so (and in normal comments too!) I'm curious to know: Between old and new, is one more charming than the other? Have better expressions and poses? More impactful-looking than the other? I really am just wondering that if/when people say they prefer the original, if it's simply due to nostalgic factor or whether they think it's legitimately more charming or drawn better.

And fun fact: The "relationship" between Ark and I was actually started due to fan suggestion!

Hmm yeah I see, somewhat a relatable picture then I suppose!

Thank you! The only style I'm very familiar with (or was) is VG Cats though I haven't looked at any of those comics in quite some time, their style has probably changed a lot too since I last looked. And you hit the nail on the head, that's how I make all my drawing recently

Critique something, you ask? Okay.

I really love the way you're revamping some of your old work. It's like a flash from the past and as you view and compare, you see the way your art has really grown and flourished. The first comic seemed to be on a whim, something new you were trying but with this comic, the image of the relationship between you and Ark actually is like.
The porportions in this are better, the facial expression are loads better and communicates what's actually happening easier. Before in the older comic, you couldn't really tell what you felt like when Ark started to flirt with you, but now you can tell that you're awkward and uncomfortable about it because of the way your character is posed and the facial expressions, too. You can see your anger and annoyance building way before you actually threaten Ark.
It's also refreshing to see Ark isn't actually an emotionless rock. I believe that your art has grown, matured, if you will from what it once was. The shading in this is better, the way your coloring is better, and the comic seems to burst with life when you read it.
It's always fun to see your old stuff, but I am really digging your new comic style. It gives life to your drawings, shows your potential and unlike the old comics, shows how well you can actually pull off things like minicomics and comics themselves.
The work is fantastic and still says that it's you without being too old or too new. It seems to have the right balance of new and old, and it shows how much you've grown from simply drawing because your bored and drawing because you actually enjoy it.

Thank you so much! I agree too, before, as most of my older stuff, heavily relied on inside jokes basically. If a casual viewer saw the old one... they'd probably be confused, like you said there's just no real emotions to be seen there. So it all basically comes down to if someone saw my videos or not. In this one, even if someone was a casual viewer and didn't even know what Resident Evil is, the emotions and actions are just a lot easier to pick up on, so I'm glad someone else understands that!

I'm also glad that you don't think it's a step too far away from how things used to be. Despite that improvement is my main goal, I admittedly do worry that I'll lose "something special" that my work used to have. It's hard to explain but anyway, thanks again!

A critique you say? Why not? XD

Lady, of all your recreations lately, I do like this one the best. It's familiar, yet revamped. It has just the right amount of detail to still be a simple cartoon/comic, but it also has a lot more subtleties than the original. The original was far more limited than this piece.

I do like the older one's last panel better. The last panel's pose in the old one was cuter, and a little more charming. With both your hands on his shoulders, I just like that better. This headlock pose isn't bad though either. Other than that, the new one is leaps and bound better. The shading, the anatomical differences, the expressions and the overall presentation as a mini-comic. Now you a comic expert so that's obviously better. e.deviantart.net/emoticons/let… " width="15" height="15" alt="" title=" (Lick)"/>

Yo... you guys have mouths now. Still no noses though, SHIET! XD

So much talk of your tits lately! I noticed in another critique some guy mentioned your bust being smaller in the second panel. It's not, and it actually makes sense what you've drawn. Your arms are squished together as Ark gets closer to you, so in turn, your boobs smash together a little more. The chest is not "smaller" just squished. That's how boobs work, your shoulders slump forward or constrict, so do the boobs! This accurately portrays a sense of cramped-ness, a very subtle anatomic note you've slipped in there. That kinda shows just how aware of your drawings you've become as apposed to your older drawings where you could tell you were just kinda guessing. Now you're taking more into consideration with poses.

The faces are slightly desu-inspired, which is ok because I think you make it your own mostly with the eyes. There's also a greater sense of motion in this piece than the original. Have you thought of employing the use of calligraphic lines to imply motion? It may help you out a lot with not having to draw so many other lines outside the figure to imply motion. I think calligraphic lines would fit right into this new/familiar style of yours. It would imply motion without so much extra "noise" around the picture.

Anyway, great composition. I would suggest the use of a background in these panels, but I think that would take away from the subject matter which is meant to be simple much like the original. When you redo something, it doesn't always have to be so dramatically different from the original, this piece shows that. Great job, lady. As a fan at heart, I've really enjoyed seeing you redo old work!

Zat ist end. Get ze fach ouut. XDDDD

BONJOUR MOTHERFUCKER!!!!!!!!!

Yo THANK, I think so too. The other ones I like too but they were more changed and shit, this one I specifically wanted it too look "just like" the original but, obviously with some changes too. And yo MS Paint what even SHADOWLEGGY HOW DO YOU MAKE SUCH AMAZING ART OMG -wut

Yeah really, I wanted the new to still look cute but I couldn't exactly remember how the pose went. So instead I went with my "plz don't hate my mary-sueness" paranoia and did the choking thing, trying to show that I'm not actually crushing on a video game character (since it's scary how many people actually do) But in hindsight, since it's a redraw anyway I probably could of gotten away with something more legitimately uguu.

Yo tits. You pretty much just said everything I explained to him too, hopefully my version made sense, but I'm glad too that it's obvious in some cases that that's what I was goin' for XD

I thought that too when I was done. I was like uhhh this looks kind of "anime" aw fuck. But I forgave it right away since, so is the old one. I could try the calligraphy thing too since some of the outside lines can get a little confusing and leave the actual drawing looking just still. And yee like I said before I wanted this to be a lot more closer to the original than past redraws. Und DANKE und aufiderzein.

yey a brand new old classis the style in this draw have more detail and you really improve the physics of the characters ( i love how you are choking him in the last panel).

is simple but have good impact for comedy doing a clasic love hate relationship ( he have a lot of love in this draw in comparation of the game reviews XD).

but still you have some issues on some of the panels caus in panel 1 you have a ...mmm much larger chest an then on the second and third its more small or at last thats the way im looking at it ( yeah im a pervert : P)

also love how you make this ark more.... galant ? snd still beat out the hell og him XD

DoubleLeggy In reply to juliusarmandobelmont [2012-10-11 12:31:31 +0000 UTC]

Thanks very much! I actually wasn't completely happy with the choking panel, mostly because I couldn't remember what that last panel looked like originally (I redrew it from memory). I'm glad the over-all theme remained comical, since I usually worry with the new style, it could be lost.

Hmm, I wouldn't say that it's "larger". Taking anatomy into consideration, the first panel they look normal due to a default standing positions. Arms hand loosely at the side, and away from the torso. In the 2nd and 3rd panel, Ark moves closer, causing my own arms to become pulled in towards the torso. As a real woman doing this, that squishes the breasts together making them maybe seem a little bigger, but really they are just pushed together due to the arms. (I hope that makes sense)

And thank you!

Well, first off let's say I prefer this much better over the original and I will say why in the following critique. First off, it looks neater. The technique in which you've been developing is evident with this recreation of old artwork and yet again I must say you've improved. You've done well, and I really love your drawings.

There is a greater variety of poses and actions in a simple comic strip, much better over the original. It also shows Ark as much less forward and more shy than we have seen previously, and I kinda like that, that he doesn't seem to be some douche trying to get with you, XD.

There is very little wrong with this, there could be a greater variety perhaps with the yes in the first three panels, but what you have already is sufficient. Much better than the original copy and paste.

As for impact, to me it doesn't really resonate. All I can actually see is some form of love/hate relationship between you and Ark (honestly after all these years I still don't understand what the relationship is meant to be) and it's remained consistent, so I guess that's a plus.

It really does carry on the theme that Ark is to be submissive and be your "pet" or "slave" so to speak, while you are the Mastermind behind everything.

All in all, good work. I prefer it 100% over the original.

DoubleLeggy In reply to Ashtonoir [2012-10-11 12:25:07 +0000 UTC]

Thanks so much! For some time I'd been wondering if it's more important to improve on technique, or to try and retain the "charm" that brought people together to begin with. I think the latter is only stunting oneself though... While people can say that I've lost that charm, or lost a "special touch", I don't think it's good to stay in the same rut forever and never trying to improve- Especially in favor to just staying "charming" which could be translated as staying "popular".

I enjoyed making that aspect too, about Ark having some more "emotion". While his poker-face is funny for some situations, it's part of why I looked back and questioned why people even liked this crack relationship. There wasn't really any indication to what Ark was feeling or even why, but I guess that's what happens when you just dive headfirst into making something that people request!

Thanks, I agree- it's definitely better (not to mention actual hard working) than copy-pasting. I wanted to have some differences, but not stray too far from the original. Most redraws I've done have been completely changed in every way more or less. With this, I wanted to go for more of a literal "redraw".

And yeah again, I think this love/hate thing resonated with a lot of people, but definitely not everyone. It started out just as me drawing Ark getting "bashed" for having such a crappy game. Then I made up a (very mini) plot that after the events of Gun Survivor, I found him homeless and contracted him to make the Survivor Youtube series... Then fans started suggesting he enjoyed the mental abuse and/or physical torture and had a crush and blah blah, and I just kinda went with it blindly. Kinda stupid really!

Thanks again

I like the idea, however, lack of backgrounds, lack of "movements" (short comix with brackets not really showing any "action" aren't that good thing to me) plus lack of details (shading doesn't mean details) is pushing me away a bit. The facial expressions are rather fitting, but at the same time lacking "originality". All in all - not that I hate this work or something, I just dislike it just like many other ones, it's hard to please me with "art" stuff. Keep in mind that it's just MY fair opinion, nothing more than that. I recomend making longer comixes like you did before, add backgrounds, add more dynamism (the 5th bracket is okay, the rest isnt that dynamic though).

When feminists are the FIRST to claim media influence plays a large role in the normalisation of attitudes.
