Description

The evening was falling and the stars began shining across the dark sky as the three horses trudged on. The little joeys, having slept all day long were finally beginning to awaken as a cool night breeze rustled Valuri’s mane. A little squeak came from one as it romped up Val’s neck and settled between his ears, looking on down the path. Oasis laughed at the baby.
“Can I carry some?” she asked, trotting up next to Val. Rau made some disgusted sound from far behind.
“Sure, grab one when you can!” Val laughed.
Oasis reached her nose out and nudged one of the wiggling furballs, it stared at her for a moment before scampering up her nose and crawling down her neck. It seemed to be looking for something and it gave a little peep every now and then. “Val they’re probably hungry!” she exclaimed.
“Oh boy, I forgot about that-” Val stammered, he suddenly realized just how urgent it was that they find the babies mother. One of the joeys crawled out of Val’s mane and down his leg. “Oh watch out it’s getting away!” he cried. Oasis sped after the little thing but it didn’t go far, after realizing it was on its own it turned around and ran back to Val.
“Aw Val, it thinks you’re its mom!” Oasis laughed, relieved that the baby was safe.
The two horses laughed together while Rau glared at them from far behind.
They continued walking through the night, determined to find the babies mother.
“Guys, hey guys did you hear something?” Rau’s voice broke the silence.
“No?” Val answered, flicking his ears curiously.
“Val!” she cried suddenly cantering up to him and Oasis. Whatever she had heard had been more frightening than the joeys because she stuck herself to Val’s side, eyes wide.
Now all three horses were on alert. A sudden chill shot through the air and Val halted, the mare’s by his side.
“Stay close,” he said in a hushed voice. Rau was practically shaking and Oasis was scanning the surroundings nervously.
“I HAVE YOU NOW!”
A stranger’s voice stabbed through the silence. Rau jumped and Val shot his head in the direction of the voice.
“W-what is that?!” Rau cried in a whisper.
Val didn’t have a chance to answer her however because a strong gust of wind choked his words. The horses dropped their heads, trying to protect themselves from the force of the wind. The joeys scampered under Val and Oasis’ mane, holding on in fear. A flurry of snowflakes began swirling in the wind. It beat into the horse's faces. Val squeezed his eyes shut.
“Are you guys okay!” He yelled above the howling wind.
“Yes!”
“I think!” from Rau. “What is this? A snowstorm all of a sudden?!”
“I have no idea, just stay close!!” Val answered but his words were too late. A scream came from Oasis, the wind had knocked her off balance and she stumbled to the ground. Val heard her and turned to find her but the swirling snow grew thicker and he couldn’t see her.
“Oasis!” he yelled as loud as he could, but there was no call back. A little joey came flying by in the wind and Rau managed to grab it, it was the joey Oasis had been holding. Val grew frightened.
“Rau, stay right next to me, we need to stay very close until it’s passed!” He yelled, but he didn’t have to convince her, the black mare had her head pressed against Val’s shoulder, eyes squeezed shut. She was shaking but she had let the opossum joey take refuge in her mane despite her dislike of the furball.
