Description
I love Creed. I love that he can be both terrifyingly foreboding, and petulantlychildish and innocent at the same time.
This is from this same DND campaign i mentioned here:.
The elb in the bed is Cyprien, and older PC of from an older campaign. Cyprien isn’t canon to the comic but in the dnd campaign he was a prophet of Oblivion.
(If you’re interested in specific world lore about what a prophet is in the Piper universe, how they relate to demigod and generally how these pantheons work, check out this journal entry linked below where I blather on about lore stuff)
PIPER Pantheon Lore NotesThe following is a quick summary of how pantheons are organized in the PIPER universe. It is by no means an exhaustive list but it gives some basic lore and information you might find interesting. Gods: There are 4 known gods in the Piper universe. Chaos Order Vivacity and Oblivion. Each of them represents specific metaphysical concepts, like life and death, order and chaos, justice and mercy —that sort of thing. Order and chaos were once one good God. But that God fractured— Splitting off into two corrupted gods.Fracturing is what happens when a god violates their domains in some profound way. We god fractures and falls, reality is warped and twisted by the event.Chaos and order are broken, so they don’t have to follow their domains as closely but they’re also hopelessly corrupt and twisted. Unfractured gods like Vivacity and Oblivion are far more powerful, But are bound to follow the rules. That makes opposing the fractured gods challenging.Demigods:Each god Has a pantheon of demigod ‘children’ following them.A demigod was someone who was once mortal but lived a life embodying an ideal so closely That they were chosen to be reborn as an embodiment of that ideal after their death. Demigods are powerful immortals that Represent an idea or domain associated with the god at the head of their pantheon. Usually their domain is a less pure or precise aspect of one of the pantheon head’s domains. For example, The god Oblivion has the domain Justice and his demigod ‘Son’ sentinel had the domain ‘Vengeance’. Vengeance is related to justice but it’s a more passionate and personal corruption of the principle. But that isn’t always the case. Sometimes the demigods represent specific aspects associated with the idea of the parent God’s domain. For example, one of the God Chaos’ demigod ‘son’ Brightly lost his domains and no longer remembers them. But currently, he appears to have developed the domain ‘mischief’—as mischievousness is a chaotic thing that disrupts order. But brightly also appears to represent the hidden ‘third option’, often wiggling his way out of danger and consequences by being clever and thinking outside the box. This shows us that the concept of Chaos—while on one hand is disruptive and destructive— also contains opportunity creativity and innovation. Another of Chaos’ ‘Sons’ is the demigod Entropy. Entropy’s domain is sacrifice. The ability to give up something valued in the short term in order to get something better in the long run. Or to sustain oneself when something unexpected happens. For example if you choose not to indulge in more luxuries and save some of your paycheck each month you’re sacrificing going out to eat more often or buying a new video game. Then later if your car unexpectedly breaks down, you have the money to fix it. So you sacrificed momentary pleasures to sustain yourself across time when a form of chaos enters your world. Sacrifice is a domain of chaos because being willing to make good sacrifices in the short term Is the how you feel with the unexpected our chaotic aspects of life. You get the point. Because demigods were once mortal, ideally they should better understand and relate to mortals. But oftentimes the longer a demigod lives, the less they are able to relate to or understand the plight of mortals. They may only live 40 years as a mortal followed by countless centuries as a demigod. It’s a bit like an adult trying to relate to a very young child. Of course they were children once themselves but it was such a long time ago that they can barely remember it. And their perspective and understanding of the world have expanded so much that they may struggle to appreciate the feelings perspectives of mortals. Some naturally have more trouble than others with this than others. Often those who interact more often with living mortals have a better sense for them, while those who do not, may lose the ability to relate. Creed is a good example of a demigod who no longer understands living mortals very well. He is one of the oldest demigods in Oblivions pantheon, having served for ten thousand years. Not only that, but he rules large swathes of the underworld working to prepare souls for judgment. He hasn’t really been to the material plane in centuries so when he does goes— he’s oblivious to the panic and confusion he causes. Prophets: Prophets are mortal people whose souls are chosen before birth by the gods to be their servants. Prophets are the mortal hands of deities often acting as the liaison between mortals and the divine.Prophets aren’t born very often but sometimes a lot more are born at once in preparation for a future world altering event. Prophets are called by the god at the head of the pantheon but often work specifically with a single demigod they’ve been assigned to. Many prophets develop special powers to support their role. There’s the obvious elemental powers connected with their pantheon, earth for oblivion, fire for chaos, water for Order or air for Vivacity. But what a prophet does and can do depends entirely on what pantheon they work for and the specific goals of the gods and demigods. For example, a prophet of Oblivion or Vivacity may be far more sensitive to the dead. They may be able to see or hear spirits in their dreams, or sense demons more acutely. A prophet of Oblivion may act as a Demon Hunters seeking out maskwearers hiding from Oblivion. They may have abilities or magic weapons to help them better hunt demons. But as Vivacity is a goddess of life who loves little children, a prophet of Vivacity may do the same thing—tracking down maskwearer cults in attempts to save kidnapped children from being sacrificed. They may develop healing powers. Sentinel is a demigod of Vengeance who guards the eastern border of the stallo nation against invaders. Sentinel is the size of a mountain and made of stone but does not have a working mouth or vocal chords to speak with. So a prophet of Oblivion assigned to work with Sentinel would have a psychic link with the demigod and may work as a diplomat or a liaison with the mortal stallo militaries, informing them of Sentinel’s will. Each prophet has their own jobs and roles inherent in their oaths. They make oaths before they’re born in which they agree to be a prophet in life. When they’re 17 they’re extended a call to renew those oaths when they officially take on the job of prophet and the full powers and responsibilities that go with it. Uncalled prophets: Most prophets live normal childhoods and find out about their oaths when they turn 17. But there are some prophets who received a call before their births but for whatever reason—they are not called officially in mortality. No one tells them they’re supposed to be a prophet or do anything. But unfortunately they may start developing powers associated with their pantheon anyways but not know what they’re for. This can cause problems as some of the abilities may make them more susceptible to the influences of demons like the maskwearers. Captain Dominic Meyer from ‘The Last Prophet’ comic is an example of an uncalled prophet. (This might be a spoiler. But you have to admit— the words ‘last prophet— are in the title, so I don’t feel bad elaborating) Dominic has heard the voices of demons from childhood and can see the influence of the maskwearers in the physical world. He sometimes hears the voices of the dead in dreams or while awake. And while he’s more or less taken on the role of demon Hunter on his own— nobody is telling him to do it. Nor does he have any clue why these powers have come to him. He’s just a guy doing his best with what he’s been given. Uncalled prophets often get the short end of the stick as their powers put them in danger and they don’t have guidance for how to use them....
Cyprien works specifically with a demigod called Sentinel as a liaison to the stallo military. Creed works almost exclusively in the underworld. So Cyprien had never met Creed before the campaign. And.. Creed didn’t make the best first impression.
When Creed’s undead hoards discovered the PCs hiding in Tazon, Creed appeared outside the city, ready to hunt them down.
This enormous grim reaper looking Mofo looming over a highly populated area naturally caused something of a panic in the city.
And being the prophet, it fell on Cyprien to try and reason with Creed in hopes of convincing him to leave Tazon and let the party go free.
Cyprien and Creed argued in circles for a long time but the demigod wasn’t willing to budge. The PCs were ‘supposed’ to be dead and one way or another, Creed was going to catch them and drag their souls back to the underworld.
Cyprien got the impression that Creed was heartless and didn’t CARE about mortals. He ended the encounter by telling Creed to F off and storming off. Much to Creed’s confusion.
Creed has been a demigod in the underworld for over 10 thousand years. He works with dead people and doesn’t really understand how living mortals think anymore. In his mind he’s just doing his job.
He’s the kind of guy agonizes over his work, using an anal precision to make sure everything runs smoothly. He’s highly neurotic, businesslike and conscientious.
But he really does care about people in his own way.
He‘s the sort of person that if you tell him you have a problem he’ll agonize over it for days and stay up all night building an infrastructure to solve your problem for you.
Never really realizing that all you wanted was a shoulder to cry on.
Cyprien’s player asked how Creed felt about being cussed out by Cyprien. Especially since Creed has always wanted a mortal prophet to help him but since he lives in the underworld where people are mostly dead—has never been given one.
I told them that Creed was agonizing over the encounter not understanding at all why it went south. It’s keeping him up at night.
When asked what Creed would do about this…
Well, he’d do THIS. Just appear in Cyprien’s room at 2 am demanding to know why Cyprien hates him.
The image of this terrifying creature just looming over the bed and consuming this poor guys entire room like a giant sleep paralysis demon—only to be like:
“Why do you hate me…?” 🥺
Made me laugh so much that I had to animate it.
I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
