I love her YCH so much and could not resist this one as Hotaru's story has continued in my head.

Hotaru's Mother has been sick for some time from injuries and poison sustained on a mission when she was a Shinobi. Hotaru a Chuunin at this point is out on a mission when her Mother's health distinctly starts to fail and it is clear she is coming to the end of her life. Miza expresses her concern about Hotaru being out on a mission at the time of her Mother's passing but Gaara and Temari knows from being friends with Hotaru that she would not want to be recalled from a mission even if they knew where exactly where they were. Hotaru knows the cost of being a Shinobi and striving for her goal, she down plays the attraction between her and Gaara so would be angry at any action that could be interpreted as favoritism.

As soon as the Team is spotted returning in the distance Gaara is notified. Gaara goes to meet them as they enter the walls of Suna. It has been a week since her Mother has passed and he notifies Hotaru of this fact. When Hotaru leaves her team to go and see the grave and say her Farewells he refuses to leave her to go alone.

At the grave as Hotaru tries her best to day her farewells the normally feisty and guarded young woman breaks down. The pair are aware of their feelings for each other but Hotaru is still at a point that she will not accept Gaara's interest at moving what they feel past friendship, for many reasons. But Gaara knows the pain Hotaru is feeling at loosing her Mother and seeing her break down he does the only thing he knows to do and that is comfort her while holding her as she cries. Hotaru though startled accepts the affections needing the comfort of knowing that even with her Mother gone she is not lost or alone. There is pain in the fact she was not here for her passing but she also knows her Mother would be proud that she is continuing to chase her dream.
