That's very kind. I hope you get on ok with the watercolours.
By the way I noticed in your profile you were reading "The Queen's Gambit". Is that the one by Dorothy Dunnett...the "Lymond" series? If so I'm a big fan.

No; actually, this one was written by Walter Tevis in 1983. It's this coming-of-age novel about a child prodigy orphan who discovers chess and struggles with alcoholism and drug consumption. It's really fascinating, this psychological dip into the mind of genius and the creative spark. Here's a synopsis: [link]
what's your series about?

Thank you for that...looks like an interesting read.
My series is about a sixteenth century Scotsman, Francis Crawford of Lymond, an all round charismatic guy involved in the politics and social affairs of Europe at the time. The writing's wonderful.

Because it's rather small. And she has an interesting face, true.

Here I am failing at stick figures, and you.... you make this.
The eyes and forehead look a little two-dimensional, but you did a great job with the rest, especially the mouth-nose region. The lighting on the hair is also very well done as are the lines on her hand.

Yeah, the eye is also bigger than the real one. Natural habit of mine.
Thanks very much!

Wow. Very good...There is a nice control of the shading on the skin. The detail on the eye is really nice too. Would it be possible to smooth out the grainy texture of the paper? Perhaps invest in really smooth paper like bristol smooth. And one last thing--perhaps it would be good to make the background contrast more with the model. The tone of the background is the same as her arm.
Nice job with this, 6x8 is rather small ^^

Hey, thanks Heather! You're right, it's rather grainy because it's just cheap sketch paper I have another type that is better for that sort of thing but I ran out of it. Although I tell ya, the roughness on her arm was intentional, for I wanted to imitate the bokeh effect of the photograph. And yeah, I'll probably darken the background later.
I've heard of bristol smooth, I think I'll go look for it on an art store somewhere.
Thanks again!

Ohh, the brand of the paper I get is Strathmore... They're big yellow pads. They're very good ^^ and not too expensive!

Fun? You had FUN doing hair??? OMG I want whatever pill you are taking
Ugh I have such a hard time doing hair - especially light colored hair
why do you think all my model sketches so far have been dark haired

Dragonfly22 In reply to 2753Productions [2009-12-31 03:47:23 +0000 UTC]
Haha, well, it's not so terribly hard in itself, you just have to be patient and have a steady pulse & do it fast.. I mean, if you waver a little, the hair will come out funny (sorry, can't think of a better word)

Thank you Randi!! I had a lot of fun with that part, and it's weird I got it somewhat nicely, cause I generally suck with hair, but hey, one keeps learning.
