Otay, constructive criticism- First of all, it's hard to see. Do you have a scanner? I used a scanner to scan this [link] and then touched it up in Photoshop with a few layers of adjustments(I can tell you how if you are interested. Even if you don't have a scanner, it should help make the image clearer and the colours stronger. I don't know if you can do it with SAI. For photoshop.. take a look at this page on Adobe's website. It's got downloads to all of CS2 along with universal activation codes. [link] You can trust this website for downloading, it IS adobe's OFFICIAL website.) I can see if I can touch this one up for you myself, if you'd like. If a scanner is out of the question, try taking the picture under lighter conditions. And focus it a bit more.

The anatomy does need some work, but that's okay, everyone sucks at anatomy for a while. The proportions of the heads and faces in particular- the backs of their heads are a little squashed in. Don't be afraid to draw the backs of their heads further out! You can always reduce it later, but definitely needs to be further out than that. Their for heads are nonexistant, it just sort of is an extended nose... here's a few face tutorials that should help with face proportions. Practice practice practice!
[link] [link] [link] [link]

Kay, so that covers the face. Body anatomy as well... just practice. Always to a structure sketch underneath to make sure everything is moving as it should. This gallery should help- [link] Look up as many tutorials as you can. This shit helps.

As for watercolouring, make sure your paper is specifically for watercolours because watercolour paper absorbs the paint how it is meant to. Sketch paper won't absorb it properly and uniformly. For a cell-shaded effect, like what I did in my painting(I'm no genius with watercolours either, I'm better at mixed media collage tbh), you simply use different concentrations of paint to get the right shade. Lighter parts are more water-diluted, darker parts have more paint than water. You can also use a clean wet brush to take paint off of a part where you messed up(another advantage of watercolour paper). The other method of shading uses different shades of colour all together and is more complicated... And honestly I'm not that great at it. Although I don't upload it, I do a LOT of mixed media and have great experience with watercolours(which is why I feel qualified to give you some tips!), but I don't use them in a traditional sense. and usually I mix them with acrylics and gesso and stuff...

Dont be. My work from when I was 16 isn't exactly brilliant but I certainly am not ashamed of it. I found some of it recently, actually. The good news is that it doesn't take long to improve your art if you are determined and have a vision!(proof- my gallery. Just look at the stuff I did last year even! My cat anatomy sucked.)

It doesn't matter if that person was a troll or not, she had a point. Anatomy is extremely important when it comes to drawing. It doesn't matter if you have the most detailed drawing in the world, if your anatomy is screwed up, the entire picture is screwed up and it won't look pretty. Instead of defending yourself by saying that it isn't important or that it's a pain in the ass (it's not supposed to be easy, ya'know.), take what she says into consideration and try to improve on your anatomy. If you wanna be a manga artist, or an artist in general, learn from your mistakes, take the criticism, and your talent will improve. Take this from someone who's been drawing since she was three. Capiche?

She was still rude about it! I'm not saying your wrong, because yeah, anatomy is totally important, but she lacked manners. She wasn't being truly HELPFUL with her comment. Like, when my friend started drawing a bunch of Warrior cats, I'd give her pointers on how the limbs should move, what was out of place, and how to shade etc. In my opinion, it is not enough to say what is wrong, but you must also explain what is wrong about it and be polite.

Sparks-Sparta In reply to Nefairyious [2013-07-09 03:09:58 +0000 UTC]

Criticism isn't about manners; it's about giving and receiving advice no matter how nasty the person may be. And she became like that because all his white knights popped up. If they didn't come and defend him for the wrong reasons, things would have remained civil. Saying that the anatomy is screwed up is enough. That alone should spark something in the person's head to think: "Is my anatomy wrong? Let me see..." and look at reference pictures. Looking at reference isn't a bad thing. That's what the internet is for, and many other artists, even the most experienced, have to look at them at some point. That's my opinion. Regardless of how it's shown, criticism is criticism and people shouldn't flip out when someone cares enough to point out the flaws in their artwork to see them improve.

Nefairyious In reply to Sparks-Sparta [2013-07-09 06:36:52 +0000 UTC]

I respect your opinion, but I disagree. I believe criticism really ought to be respectful. Otherwise it is fuel. Fuel that can be used to fuel determination to work better or to vent in anger and frustration. Criticism is something different, something more useful. Criticism can be harsh or kind, but in any way it picks the piece apart and analyses, appreciates or disapproves of parts. No whole composition is bad. Usually(I have read the Maradonia books so I know not everything has some good to it). And no whole composition is good, usually.

Thoughtful criticism ought to have some good and some bad, with a focus on bad. A great critic adds suggestions to make it better. A bully just says everything sucks TROLOLOL.

I do not believe Slenderpanties had any good intentions with her post whatsoever. She was rude and not very helpful at all. A real criticism would have pointed out the the foreheads are slanted incorrectly, perhaps push them out a bit further at the top. Also, the lower jaw is further back than the forehead. And stuff like that. And maybe posted a link to a helpful reference. That's the kind of advice I usually give and I've made a bunch of friends that way. I tend to go overboard on advice simply because I am OCD(I'm not just saying that. I actually am) but it isn't hard to leave criticism in a positive form that makes everyone feel good.

Sparks-Sparta In reply to Nefairyious [2013-07-09 10:35:05 +0000 UTC]

And I respect yours. But unfortunately, criticism isn't always about respect. Criticism comes in all shapes and sizes, and it's unavoidable; even after a person dies. You see and hear it every single day, and it's in the biggest and smallest places on Earth.

That's usually what artistic criticism is like, but many people get very butthurt even if the person was nice about the critique.

You can believe what you want, but Slenderpanties had a point within her words regardless of her motive. His anatomy needs to be improved on, and by looking at the picture, so does his use of watercolors. Many people aren't subtle about their criticism anymore because people get so offended so easily, they call on their friends to white knight for them and to give them asspats, rather than replying to the person alone.
References should be a no-brainer for any artist; some are probably too stubborn to take the time to look in the first place.

I'm with Sparky here, if she said something like: "YOUR DRAW IS TERRIBLE HURR DURR!!!1" then you wouldn't mind and ignore her, but anatomy is REALLY important, no matter the type of drawing.

Besides, every "artist" gets criticism every now and then, and most of them takes them good! Because they can 'take' it as a tip and work it just fine. You shouldn't get offended by it, unless someone is ACTUALLY insulting your draw. There's a big difference between "Insult" and "Criticism".

You were rude. To be rude is wrong. Also, perhaps his anatomy needs work, but your English is a disgrace. You don't capitalise properly, you don't use proper punctuation, your spelling looks like that of a brain damaged monkey's, and you abuse grammar and syntax. Your atrocious English makes his anatomy look like Michelangelo by comparison.

Well if you don't want to be judged, keep your horridly written, snide comments to yourself instead of putting them on a public site for all to see.

However, upon further inspection, I see you are a troll. Therefore, logic does not apply to you as it does to normal people. Instead of acknowledging that you are being an ass, you will merely revel in the revelation and proceed to post further idiotic comments. Eventually, if you ever gain elementary intelligence, you will look back on this posts and realise- You are making a complete donkey's behind of yourself.

Good day to you, Madame,
