They descend mostly below the sphere; the whole being is covered by a cloud of particles of moldable matter and “nanomachines” which protect the entity from the elements or any external factor, this "cloud" is held together by the use of a powerful field that produces the sphere.

ESSOS numbers are on the hundreds, each unit is located in every active corner of the earth, always monitoring the conditions and situation of their respective regions floating and not interfering with the environment unless is necessary.
