Dave kept a sharp eye on the youth as a member of the audience with his arms crossed, quietly surveying. He and Chris were stuck together for the year. It meant accompanying him to the Bruksprov event for his stud. Dave didn't think the young-minded stud was ready to represent the studbook as a prime specimen but then Dave came to understand there was an ulterior motive going on. The immature young bucks shared a similar interest. Women.
"Your dad is glaring again," Kate chuckled, helping to straighten out Jax's bridle, giving him another lookover.
Chris glanced at the stands and back with a shrug, "I told you, he's like a bad smell that never goes away." Chris shook his head, buttoning up his show jacket.
"Does he know we're together?" Kate asked, feeling the sharp eyes grazing the back of her neck.
Chris snorted and laughed, "Do you seriously tell your parents who you date?"
"Oh, god no," Kate laughed back. "Then they start asking waaaaay too many questions. I just let them figure it out on their own."
"I wish it were that easy," Chris groaned. "My dad's so old fashioned that dating is inconceivable unless you're planning the wedding already."
"Oh my god, that's horrible," she laughed again. "Poor dude. I bet he shakes his fist at the youth today. Back in my day~" she mocked the phrase in a friendly way. She understood the type. Stuck in their ways of a different time. Her and Chris's generation caught all the flak they could throw. How they were so "care free". But she didn't mind. She smiled, shrugged it off, and lived her life how she saw fit. Kate wiped Jax's shoulder off, pushing his nose out of the way. He was amped up enough with the buzz of horses around him. "Alright, big guy, you're looking pretty suave for your debut. Behave yourself."
Jax butted his nose into Kate's side, stepping around to lip at her some more. She smelled nice and he knew there were treats somewhere on her. He nickered at her, dragging a string of drool over her shoulder, ruffling her hair. Kate giggled and pushed his cheek away again. She grabbed his muzzle, giving it a squish, returning his attention; the stud seemed to be all for it. "Who said I was talking to you, Jax? You just do your thing, handsome boy." She patted him again, stepping away. She tidied her ponytail, smiling at Chris, "I'll meet you down by the photoshoot area; get him wiped down and such."
Chris nodded, winding up Jax's lead, "Thanks." He led Jax around to the entrance of the arena. The stud was flicking his ears all over the place, nickering at a horse here and there. He wasn't a bad horse by any means; just young and dumb. He was eager to go into the ring, fighting the lead. Chris sighed quietly, letting him walk circles around him to blow off some steam. Stupid horse. He had already lunged him so much to get his energy out. He had a feeling he'd come out of it once he saw there weren't any jumps set up yet. That's all the horse seemed to spend his two brain cells on.
On, they jogged into the arena for their evaluation. As Chris had guessed: Jax was all balls to the wall to rush into the arena, getting a firm tug back. He pulled his lips back, giving the judge a grin, fighting his handler. But by the time they made it to the other end, his interest had simmered down, being much more obedient by Chris's side for his evaluation.
Kate was waiting to take Jax from Chris as he exited for the photoshoot area. "Stunning, as always. You boys are looking great out there."
Chris smirked, fixing his hair up and letting her take him. She seemed to like being involved so he didn't stop her. She had been around horses long enough to know the whole process. And certainly didn't mind putting up with Jax's quirks.
She wiped the spot off his chest, getting him squared up for the photo. "Messy boy," she cooed at him. She liked the stud's personality. He was bright and curious; playful. "He kinda reminds me of you, Chris."
Chris's grin went lopsided, not really thinking that could be a compliment in any way. "You think I'm a blockhead like this oaf?"
Kate slung the towel over her shoulder stepping back, "Naaaaah, I've seen your grades, dude. You make Jax and me look like pond scum. No, I was thinking you're both sweethearts," she said sweetly.
Chris faked a gag, "Ew-"
"Oh, stop," she teased, "You can be nice and it won't turn you into a pillar of salt, I promise," she giggled. "I promise I won't hug you in the middle of the show grounds like your dad," she laughed, getting a smirk and an eye roll from Chris. She knew Chris long enough through their years at school together. Only recently had she started going to the same stable where they got to know each other beyond classmates. She knew he didn't like the ooey-gooey stuff and neither did she, in particular. She just thought it was funny to tease him over it in good jest.
They both had a mutual understanding of affection. That's what drew them together in the first place. They were practical. Chris tended to be more reserved, not because he was shy, but he just didn't find it necessary to put something private on parade. Kate respected that. She wouldn't mind being doted on but at the end of the day, it didn't matter to her what others could see about them. They were content with each other and that's all that mattered.
Jax was trying his best to stand still just as they had made him practice again and again. But the smell-good lady was just within a whisker's reach. He craned his neck out long and stretched out far. If he could just reach...a little further...
Kate felt a little tickle on her arm and looked down to see the stud's smile as he lipped at her arm. She snorted and poked his nose, pushing his muzzle back. That just made him flap his lips at her finger, turning into an absolute ham for her attention. She chuckled and held out her hands for him to investigate. "Such a lover," she sang, not bothered a bit by his string of drool as he checked her palms for anything special.
"You want me to give him your number," Chris kidded, walking around her to straighten him back up. He saw him sneak that hind leg forward.
Kate chuckled with him, "You want him to steal your girlfriend?"
"If she's into horses that much…" He let that hang in the air with a smirk. Kate feigned a scoff and gave him a playful thump on his arm as he passed.
Women. Dave saw all the signs between the two. The smiles, the physical contact, how she put up with that horse's antics. He should be happy for the two of them. He should be happy for Chris that he was happy. But Dave couldn't shake the fear. Fear of many 'what ifs'. It was finally happening and he wasn't ready for it. He was watching her steal his son away from him.

Ahh, our lot in life is to be a horse-kleenex! My old mare was so sneaky about it, too.
Jax is adorable, and I hope Dave settles himself down and enjoys the fact Chris is growing up nicely.
I love how you do coloring!

Thank you <3

Out here in "the west", our horses will eat young tumbleweeds, which sprout early in the spring and can be quite succulent. Unfortunately, they produce both strong green and red pigments. When the horse chews them up, she gets a mouthful of what is basically black ink. I had more t-shirts and sweatshirts with black stains on them from my mare's wiping her mouth on me.
The hard part was keeping her away from my pale breeches at a show.

"...what I do have are a very particular set of skills. Skills I have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you. If you avert your eyes from my children now, that will be the end of it - I will not look for you, I will not pursue you... but if you don't, I will look for you, I will find you... and I will kill you." -Dave protecting his childrens from any such horror.
