Description
Still working on the Flotation Device Reboot. This is a map I made in DA Muro of the Torat Sector, where most of my stories will be set. Unlike the last version of Flotation Device that was just our Solar System, this sector is not the limit of the setting. I have a few more neighboring sectors in the works, and you are all welcome and encouraged to develop your own sectors, systems, nebulae, quadrants, whatever you want. Heck, make entire galaxies if you so desire. There will be no limit to the scope and scale for Flotation Device, as long as you're having fun with it.Originally, I was going to try and make a realistic-ish map with the planets looking all earthy and such, but then I realized I don't know how to do that, so instead I made it like this, more stylistic and simple, and I think it meshes with the logo design fairly well, so I'm sticking with it, and might use it for the other sectors as well. Feel free to do the same if you ever make a map. Note that this isn't a solar system (planets don't revolve around the Arcana stars, even though you might get that impression). Each world has its own star that I didn't put in the picture. This sector is really more like a dozen or twenty-something solar systems. I simply drew up the most important landmarks in it. Without further ado, here's a synopsis on the Torat Sector:
Long ago: The Torat Sector lies at the boundaries of space of most human civilizations (let's assume for now that there are more than one), and is snuggled between the territories of several other alien empires. It was once home to many Cursor ruins (a lot more on them, later. Cursors were once known as the Precursors, like in a bunch of other scifi settings... except people eventually discovered that the Cursors were still alive in other parts of the galaxy, so the name changed. They show up every now and then, more advanced than the victims of their space-dickishness), but was soon colonized by the Conicoids, a race of lapine-feline humanoids (yes, they will be adorable). A century or so ago, the Cursors re-invaded the sector and attacked the Conicoids, bombing them into submission usually with the reasoning that the Conicoids were "boring". The Conicoids re-invigorated their empire and did everything they could to "no longer be boring", and the Cursors left to go troll other parts of the galaxy.
Not so long ago: The Conicoids were attacked again, this time by the Ozmites, a race of warrior bug people who evolve stronger every time they're defeated. After subjugating the Conicoid worlds, including their homeworld, Aurovo (it's in a neighboring sector, not this one), the Ozmites ran afoul of humanity, and an alliance of human empires went to war with the Ozmites. It took a few years, but mankind won (fuck yeah!), forcing the Ozmites to surrender and relinguish their hold on the Torat sector.
Nowadays: Humans rule the Torat Sector, but no empire has laid full claim to it. The Galaxy Corporation has been colonizing it since the war with the Ozmites, and plans to build up some sovereign states in the near future. Hourglass is more or less the human capital of the sector, and their most populated world, but space stations enjoy a lot of traffic around the twin stars, Arcana Major and Arcana Minor, the brightest objects in the sector. Krozrazians from the Hax Asteroids and the Ozmites left over from the war can be something of a problem, and there's never a shortage of crime or piracy from humans themselves, but the sector is a long ways away from other battlefronts. It would be peaceful... except it's haunted.
Usual Inhabitants: Humans, you know them, are one of the majority species of the Sector, though they're still newcomers compared to their neighbors. Conicoids are another majority species, and are often found in human settlements on what were once their planets. Ever the servile, industrious pacifists, Conicoids are enjoying a much better relationship with their fellow humanoids than with the Ozmites, though some humans take advantage of them, because we're a dickish species like that. Krozrazians are arguably the third-most populous species in the sector. They're a bunch of skull-faced scavenger-pirates who can survive in a vacuum. They've enjoyed a ton of salvage since the human-ozmite war, but many are resorting to piracy or the gladiator arena on Lathcairn to make ends meet now that it's peacetime. Ozmites can still be found every now and then, making trouble for everyone else, but they also tend to stick around Lathcairn's gladiator fights. Otherwise, ghosts and supernatural shenanigans seem to be cropping up recently, and many astralnauts are showing up to investigate the haunted area of space. The sector is also the alleged home of Croglskogs, a type of dangerous vermin found all over the galaxy.
Major Locations:
• Arcana Major and Arcana Minor: Binary stars with no planets. They're sort of new, with rich minerals and gases still swirling around them mid-genesis, and as such they are host to big manufacturing and mining operations. They are the brightest objects in the sector, and are seen as the center of Torat.
• Hourglass: A terrestrial Conicoid world before the Cursors glassed it for shits and giggles. Humans and Conicoids have been reconstructing it since the war with the Ozmites ended. It's a desert world with some tropical pockets of civilization, bustling with spies and assassins. It's dangerous, but still the current center of humanity in the sector, and it has an uprorious night life. It's going to be the home of my rebooted Widow Company mercenaries (remember them?)
• The Hax Asteroids: Named for the largest asteroid of the bunch, Hax, the home"world" of the Krozrazians. Despite being... in space, the field has giant kaiju and other monsters floating around and throughout it. Krozrazians are somewhat okay with outsiders coming to the asteroids, but it's still a dangerous area for humans to venture, and something of a pirate haven to the surrounding systems.
• Lathcairn: Once a bustling trade center of Conicoid space, it is now a junkyard world, and the cornerstone of Krozrazian operations in the sector. It is also home to some remnant Ozmites, and the two species share and operate the massive gladiator arena, The Scrapyard. Hope you get the puns with that.
• Sargoil: A watery swamp world out in the middle of nowhere. It actually lacks a rocky mantle. Instead, its continents float on the oceans. No, I don't know what science is. Sargoil is scarcely populated, since the native Croglskogs devour non-living matter like metal and clothing. Hunters and criminals go there often to collect bounties on the wildlife or hide from the law, respectively.
• The Fool and Obfu Station: The Fool is an old star. Obfu Station is the most intact Cursor ruin in the sector, orbiting The Fool. Plenty of people are investigating the ancient station, especially since it was curiously untouched by the Cursors the last time they were in the sector. Some believe it has something to do with the ghosts and astralnautic problems, but I can't guarantee anything yet.
• The Grand Torat Hotel: I'll be expanding on this a lot more as it's the first location I'll be writing in a story. It's an opulent hotel resort in a large space station plaza at the border of the sector, and it's main selling point to its wealthy clientele is playing up ghost stories and hauntings.
That's about it, for now. I'll expand on all of this later, with more stories in the works, but I welcome any questions you may have as I continue with the reboot. Also, you guys don't have to wait for me if you want to write into the setting. Just ask me anything you want, and get writing.

It's exciting to see more of the rebooted Flotation Device universe! It seems a lot larger and more varied than the previous version and I'm looking forward to seeing more

I'll try to get my first story up soon. Can't wait to see how you write back into the setting, too.
