Description
... magician!LOL seriously I had this ide of drawing Merlock as if he was a magician like magicians are depicted into "The Bartimaeus sequence" by Jonathan Stroud.
"The Bartimaeus sequence" is a series of quite funny young adult novels that follows the adventures of Bartimaeus, a five-thousand-year-old boisterous djinni.
The novels are basically set in an alternate universe where, although history shares many similarities with our world, magic has always existed and basically every great empire from the earliest history made use of magic in order to secure his dominance. The story is basically set in a sort of early 1900 where the greatest dominant power is the British Empire; in this society basically magician detain the full power over the commoners (non magical users) and have created a worldwide empire. similar to the British colonial empire.
In Stroud's novels magicians have two particular aspects, in contrast to magician from other books or stories.
First of, basically magicians do not have any magical power on their own; "magic" in Bartimeaus' world is merely the knowledge of certain rituals that allows a magician to summon and enslave some spiritual entities that come from another plane of existence (called simply The Other Place). This entities have different levels of powers; we basically see entities that goes from weak spirits capable of minimal form of magic to the almost all-powerful reality warping entities.
An interesting idea if you ask me.
The second particular aspect is the magician's attire; in Bartimaeus' world if you see a wizard like we imagine a classic wizard in our world (a guy dressed with a long robe, a cape and a pointed hat) then you can bet that you are seeing a low class and incompetent wizard. On the other hand truly powerful have the tendency to blend in with the normal society, in fact, like Bartimeus himself says at one point a true powerful wizard have more like the appereance of a bank manager!
I guess I found an excuse for drawing Melrock in a fancy suit right? LOL and I also decided to give him a change in beard and hair, I believe that this new look suits him.
He definitely has the look of a cold, power-hungry (and backstabber), shrewd individual, like magicians are for the mayor part in the novels!
Oh and about the entity he is currently summoning .... no it is not Anubis or Jackie the Jackal as probably many of you are guessing altough it is a jackal head spirit that had a big antagonist role int he first book!
