to save whoever I commission/trade with/etc. from time/effort/complication fees, here's a transparent file with all his tats and such. warp tool away! xD

(though I also don't mind their being simplified if it suits one's style more, so long as they're generally accurate)

holy hell holy shit look at him again!! 👀👀👀
I spent a week straight pouring several hours a day into this, on top of the time spent on re-used elements like certain tats, the headshot, the electric guitar, or tracing over the last ref's pose... culminating in an untrackable amount of time somewhere between 20-30 hours, maybe?? in comparison, my full coloured fullbody ychs with background tend to like. max out at 4-5, lol
and even fixing up this whole description was like, hours more across a few days
(also resized this by half, the original file size is p r i t t y big, even after removing a bunch of excess layers)

that sleeve tat alone was a full night where I wanted to replace the old one with actual notes that hold meaning rather than lazy stuff I thought just looked good, so I chose his bastille song, which was too darn indie for the sheet music to already exist for, so I went "How Hard Could Transposing Possibly Be?", downloaded an app to put the song through after stripping the vocals and cropping the lyric then convert it to notes and then edit them further visually and THEN re-compose the design itself. a different artist might just pick something more mainstream but I wanted this specific song and to limit band doubles on the ref so uh, no regrets ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ

as you can probably tell he's the manifestation of a lot of my musical interests and such, so is peppered with nods to many of my favourite bands

the band is named after himself, cause he’s the frontman, main writer, vocalist, guitarist, amongst other business-related responsibilities (sort of like panic! at the disco being a "band" with certain members but brendon urie being acknowledged as the main guy). their style sounds kind of like a cross between all time low, foo fighters, and green day, but distinctly their own. they get about as big as billy talent or bastille and have played on mainstream talk shows and SNL

• he can also play bass, and drums to a certain extent but usually only does so to mess around or put together demos before handing it off to the rest of the band for their additions

• he started the band in his teens with two of his oldest friends ⁽ᵒⁿˡʸ ʰᵃᵛᵉ ᵃⁿᶜᶦᵉⁿᵗ ᵃʳᵗ ᶠᵒʳ ᵗʰᵉᵐ ᵃᵗ ᵗʰᵉ ᵐᵒᵐᵉⁿᵗ⁾:
- mac the upbeat drummer, who's a dalmatian-like canid,
- and brennan, a supremely chill and low-key brown tabbyish felid guy who was their bassist til he dropped out when the band started to really take off. the strenuous touring and rehearsal lifestyle proved too much for him, so he stepped back to spend more time with his gf and their kittens - they're still on good terms though, and sometimes he does join in for a special show or two
- his role was replaced by zack (ref revamp impending as well), an acquaintance they knew from overlapping friend groups for a few years
- taryn is the latest addition to the band, the recurring touring member who takes over most backup vocals, keyboard, and rhythm or lead guitar while zodiac plays the other
they're definitely pretty distinct, being such a diverse and unique looking crew :ℙ
• prior to playing music full-time, his main income used to be from working at a local music store

be it queer rights, nonhuman, feminist, etc.
• he’s been through a spectrum of labels but now just calls himself the vague and all-encompassing ‘queer’ instead of explaining that he’s kind of gay but only for his partner and is somewhere on the ace spectrum, disinterested in sex but not repulsed

• all his tattoos hold great personal meaning to him. in chronological order of their acquisition:
- his osprey freeze-brand is in memory of his mom who died of cancer when he was 16, as ospreys were her favourite animal;
- 'somewhere in the stratosphere' is in reference to his favourite shinedown album that he first taught himself songs from as a young teen;
- his left upper arm has the american idiot heart grenade with 'still breathing' as that's one of his favourite songs of all time that literally feels like he wrote it;
- the tattoo on his inner right arm is jay's writing of 'forever and a day': the cheesy thing they often say to each other;
- the sleeve is a music staff becoming a pride flag for obvious reasons, the teal and pink are his and jay's colours, and the lyric is from bastille's 'the anchor' ("you're the anchor that I tie to my brain, cause when it feels like I'm lost at sea, you're the song I sing again and again ♪"). it's lacking the A♭ minor key and time signatures cause his tattoo artist talked him into having it look a little smoother, haha
- the handprint on his upper chest is from their daughter
- most recent addition is that large upper back piece with the pawprints of each bandmate! (both the two he originally started it with, brennan and mac, and the two newer additions of zack and taryn)

• clothing/accessory info:
- his wedding ring is a bass clef and upside down treble clef forming a heart ♥
- the headphones he wears are sort of like very large earbuds that sit in the base of the ear, a little like a mix between earbud and headphone, with the best of both worlds of both audio quality and portability
- centaurs being pantsless is about the equivalent of male shirtlessness: i.e., you would not do so at the office or job interview or most restaurants, but hanging out friends or at the beach or going for a run is just fine. (monsterfolk had to petition very hard for laws to change about this. human standards banned top nudity for females and bottom nudity for many species but not others, so werewolves for example found the double-standard ludicrous where only one of their forms was legislated against, or centaurs but not vampires feeling like a racist comparison to animals. all that to say, Dick Out™ is just fine for casual environments, but not regularly in public lol)
- even during ontario winters their lower legs don't tend to get very cold, being all bone and tendon from the ankle/wrist down, so socks and such are mostly ornamental

• he got his sweater at a centaur-specific store in new york years ago and has worn it almost daily ever since
- when the first one finally wore out, jay bought him an identical replacementone
- its text is in reference to the fact that "half horse" is a racist derogatory slur that has a nasty history going back to slavery, and calling any species 'half-human' kind of admits that you (very falsely) view your own kind as the 'default' and therefore every other species revolving around you.
- it becomes sort of associated with him so once his band really takes off, they partner with the company to sell merch of the design including other species too

• he was really really close to his mom, who supported his artistic endeavours his whole life.
in his teen years, she was stricken with cancer and didn't make it out which drove his dad into complete withdrawal for a long time, becoming completely emotionally unavailable for his son, leading to zodiac move out and in with his friends/bandmates as soon as he could and distance himself for a while. eventually his dad contacted him again, and explained that the reason he was so distant was due to terrible depression, but being in a better place now was hoping to rebuild the relationship with his son. he does get to be at the wedding, yay (ง ᐛ )ง
(after jay's reconciliation with his own mom, who he went no-contact with for far crueler reasons, she eventually meets zo's dad and... the two hit it off quite well, to the bafflement? but blessing of their sons x'D)

• jay and him have been together since high school
they started with difficulty based in different relationship goals, zo craving stability and jay struggling with a lot of things like drugs, sleeping around and drinking too much, but he finally pulled his act together when given the ultimatum. he went just about cold turkey on everything, zodiac forgave the whole past to move forward with their vastly improving lives... though it did take much longer to forgive himself til zodiac outright asked, "don't you trust me enough to believe me when I say you're worth it?" :'3c
it's been smooth sailing from there - jay was the crutch zodiac relied on to cope with the loss of his mother, which he'll always be thankful for, helped kick his smoking habit and swap to vape instead, and is routinely the only voice that reaches zo when he's lost in his own mind. they're profoundly dedicated, silly, know each other's souls better than their own, and forever grateful to spend as much time with their best friend as they do without ever remotely getting sick of it

• they get engaged on the top of the empire state building
- with a full carefully planned day surprising jay on a '''business trip''' he brought him along for, with a reservation at a fancy restaurant and stay at an even fancier hotel after with a huge whirlpool in their room ♥
- the wedding is a compromise between jay's craving for a huge bash and zodiac's hope for a more intimate gathering: the service is very small and personal with just their closest squad, followed by a large extravagant reception with every single friend and family acquaintance they know. and yes they both cry (zodiac starts it)
- after a few years, they move to a larger house with better dedicated studio space for zodiac and more room for both their little faun girl mei and big dog they adopt (along with jay's cat), and live their absolute best lives~

side note:
despite technically being an unusual branch of ungulate, centaur abdomens are much slimmer than any equines', since their varied omnivorous diet does not require huge lengths of intestine in order to digest tough plant matter. they're generally not much wider than their torsos!
