[ kithood ] :
Born during the edges of Greenleaf, Mantiskit was the only result of a fling. The father was forever unknown, and growing Mantis, having no intent on finding him, didn't care. His mother, Jadeleaf, was the only cat that he paid attention to. She raised him like any mother would: with love, care, and plenty of patience. Growing up, he was most often seen around his mother, stumbling behind her everywhere she went. Often, she didn't go outside of the nursery, so when curiosity struck Mantiskit would go outside at night while nearly everyone was asleep. He'd bat around bugs and moths, avoiding the sentries and any other lingering cats.
When Mantis was just over a moon old, Jadeleaf passed away after a fatal predator attack. Alone and scared, Mantiskit kept his distance from the other kits. He's yet to come out of his shell, purposely avoiding others and keeping to himself.
A kind face, Flamestep, began to assist Mantis in any way that he could. He started by helping Mantis eat whole food, then lining his nest, and then keeping him company. Mantis had made a new friend as well, also being cared for by Flame, named Finchkit. Mantis still kept to himself for most of the time, but Flame and Finch had become the closest thing to family.
Slowly, he gained the courage to wander about camp, usually with Finchkit in tow. Flamestep had invited Mantiskit to nest with him and Finchkit in the medicine cat den, and immediately awestruck and excited, Mantis accepted. This made him even more bold- eventually venturing back to the nursery from time to time to visit Goldenkit, a very buoyant and excitable kit, not unlike Finchkit. All this time outside made his skin grow red, and he began flinching at every touch, thinking he was constantly getting pricked by rude claws.
Before being made an apprentice, Finchkit convinced Mantis to run around and play. They ended up tumbling into an older dame by the name of Tranceshadow. They didn't know her prejudices against their adoptive father, or anything more than she seemed a bit scary. Instead of shooing them away, Tranceshadow took the opportunity to teach them how to properly pounce.
[ apprenticeship ] :
Mantispaw was given the mentor Brokenshadow, a feline who’s tail always laid limp. He was excited for this mentor. It wasn’t a cat he’d really spoken to before, but the difference in style that they had was more intriguing than disappointing. Soon into his apprenticeship, Mantis realized what the stinging was caused from. He hadn’t been able to do much battle training, and sometimes even hunting was difficult if he scraped against the brush, so he had finally voiced these problems to his father, and his extended family, the medicine cats. They found out that cats, and the vegetation, were not in fact attacking him, but this pain was caused by sunlight. His sensitive skin was getting sunburnt.
His schedule needed to change. He couldn’t be out in the sun anymore, or risk failing at his duties. Instead, he had to become nocturnal. Luckily, Brokenshadow was willing to train him during the night. At first, this change was difficult for Mantis. He didn’t like being abnormal, even to the point of being ashamed of his eyes and his stark white fur. So the fact he had to lead his life at a different time than everybody else? He was embarrassed. He didn’t want to be teased for sleeping all day, and surely didn’t want anyone talking about how he couldn’t be in the light.
Though, when he began to be able to be touched without flinching, he knew he had to bear the weight of a different life. He was lucky enough that his father was awake at night, and some of his family and friends would be awake for some time just to keep him company. Plus, it wasn’t uncommon in Shadowclan to go on night patrols, or for cats to prefer hunting at night.
When Raccoonstar banished Poisonfang, it was the first time he’d truly interacted with his, unbeknownst to him, cousin Skypaw. At first, he liked the fellow apprentice. But that quickly fell apart as she insulted his father. Mantis was fearsomely protective, but settled at request of Flamestep. Skypaw wound up apologizing, and Mantis was truthfully impressed.
He became closer to the chaotic cat known as Goldenkit, and then at the end of his apprenticeship, Goldenpaw. She was always a welcome addition to his day, her unapologetic personality something that could make him smile. He ended his apprenticeship happy and sort of proud of himself. He was still insecure about the way he looked, but not quite as much as he used to be. He learned different tricks from his mentor, learning how to balance more on his paws than his tail (though he still most certainly used his tail). All in all, things were looking good.
[ warriorhood ] :
((tw; violence, gore, animal death. marked by ‘((...))’ ))
Mantispaw earned the name Mantisflame, mostly after his father Flamestep. Finchpaw, his sister, became Finchfire, another allusion to their adopted dad.
Things, for a few moons, were relatively normal. He continued being awake during the night, and continued to try and hold onto those he had already befriended. He learns the true relation of Cinderspark to Flamestep, and how all of her children are his... cousins. He isn’t thrilled by this whatsoever.
One morning as the sun began to rise, Mantisflame joined his father for a walk out in the territories to gather moss. Flamestep had become a kit-caregiver, and invited Mantis to help him with some of his duties. Almost always, he would jump at the opportunity. When they went out in the territory, they were attacked by a hawk. Mantis, initially, was ignored, but his father was nearly lifted into the sky. The young warrior fought hard, defending the red tom with everything he had. The hawk fought back hard as well. ((In the end, Mantisflame killed the hawk by himself. But Flamestep was critically injured, and was losing a lot of blood.)) Mantisflame was panicked, trying to help him, but Flamestep stayed calm and collected. ((Eventually, they used moss to try and clog the bleeding, but it was far from enough.))
((Mantis returned to camp with an unconscious Flamestep on his back. They were both stained with blood, and both were treated by Valerianshade.)) Mantisflame fiercely protected his dad while he was recovering, staying directly next to his side while he ventured in and out of consciousness. For days following, Mantisflame would stay in the medicine den like he’d done when he was a kit, watching over his dad.
The night of the attack, Raccoonstar visited. He congratulated Mantisflame on his bravery, and how he had saved a fellow clanmate. This helped Mantisflame come to terms with what happened- and how his size could be, at times, a good thing used to protect the ones he loved. Some time after, he met a Thunderclan cat at a gathering after having a small, verbal altercation with Frecklefrost. The gathering itself had been tense, stress and anger welling up between Thunderclan and Shadowclan for crossing borders. But Mantisflame acknowledged that cats from other clans were still just... cats. He also learned some rumours other clans teach their kits about Shadowclan. It was... odd. But Tumbleheart, the Thunderclanner, was kind and curious. It was a good interaction.
Tensions began rising between Thunderclan and Shadowclan as scents and cats were found on eachother's territory. Raccoonstar declared war, procuring a number of cats for the battle. The names included Skyfall, his cousin, and Goldenstrike, his dearest friend. With those warriors going out to battle, Mantis instinctually wanted to join them to protect then, but instead he stayed at camp while they went off. He didn't rest while they were gone, waiting and pacing with ears perked for any sign of their return. When they finally did, muddy and battered, Mantisflame was on them immediately. He searched initially for those he knew: his relatives, his friends, even Briarflight, Golden's previous mentor. He found all of them except for Goldenstrike, and while he would've kept searching, he noticed how Skyfall was barely holding it together. He carried his weak and worn cousin to the medicine den, watching over her with the help of Flamestep. He tended to her while the medicine cats were busy with their other patients, waiting anxiously for Goldenstrike to appear. Eventually, she did, outwardly uninjured but suffering from bad bruising and internal wounds terrible enough that it was hard for her to breathe. Mantisflame stayed in the den for as long as he could, helping clean up the warriors and watch over those he knew until he was eventually ushered out by Batface.
Not long after, Shadowclan faced more tragedy. Sagepaw, the leader's daughter, was brought back to camp with a horrific injury. (( Impaled with a pointed stick smelling of twolegs, Sagepaw soon succumbed to the wound. )) The occurrence added a whole new layer of doubt, fear, and confusion. They had just faced war and loss. Why were they again damned? Not even a moon later, Batface came into camp on Tranceshadow's back, hardly clinging onto life. Upon seeing him, Flamestep began having a panic attack, and Mantisflame was at his side immediately. He tried his hardest to help, even trying to get Cinderspark's attention to help him out of it, but nothing was working. Glaciersky, completely lacking any sympathy or care for Flamestep, told him to snap out of it. And Flamestep did- enough for him to stumble to the medicine den to see Batface.
Mantisflame didn't end up joining Flamestep. Instead, he crumbled to the ground in the middle of camp, crying. He didn't have the energy to hold himself up, or to even know if Bat was going to make it. Goldenstrike joined him in the grass, comforting him until he was able to pull himself together. Luckily, Bat survived.
A few moons later, it was announced that Eclipseheart, one of Flamestep's fond friends, had decided to offer to carry his litter. Put simply, Mantisflame was going to get more siblings. During the pregnancy, Flamestep adopted a kit by the name of Smokekit, due to his mother's request. Soon, Eclipseheart had three kits: Morningkit, Daykit, and Eveningkit. At the time, there was another kitten who needed a mother, and Eclipseheart ended up nursing Nightkit as well. Later, Flickerkit was also adopted into the growing family. Mantisflame tried his best to keep up with the kits, but it was difficult for him due to the hours he spent awake. He, at the very least, wanted his younger siblings to know him and to know they could rely on him.
Once they all became apprentices, Shadowclan was yet again forced to face turmoil. Having scented twolegs prior, suddenly a tree collapsed onto the dens in camp, (( killing three and injuring more. Smokepaw's leg became trapped underneath the log, and once he was freed, was all sorts of torn up and gnarly. )) The other siblings panicked, too, but some had managed to help the rest of their clan. Before Shadowclan had the chance to find their bearings, yet another tree fell, yet this time everyone avoided getting hurt. Raccoonstar announced that they would be evacuating to the Waterfall, and Mantisflame carried the injured Smokepaw all the way there.
-to be added on: Emberthorn, the son of Cinderspark, harassed and insulted Flamestep in front of his litter.
-mantisflame confronted Emberthorn, and ended up scruffing the tom. He felt shameful for shoving his weight around
- Flamestep's litter graduates into Morninglight, Nightwhisper, Eveninghaze, Dayshimmer, and a healed Smokefeather is able to graduate with them.
-Sootcreek, Mantis' grandfather, becomes mates with Beesplash.
-Finchfire, Brindlecloud, Martengale, Timberwolf, and Flamestep vanish without a trace. Mantis is constantly in the up and about, watching for any sign of them.
-Timberwolf and Brindlecloud return unscathed, with story of twoleg capturing and Kittypet explanations. Twolegs were taking away a feline's ability to have kits, and Petroleum was with them.
-Finchfire and Martengale return with scars and shaved fur, the procedure completed. Mantis tries to welcome Finn, but she became distant and closed off after the event.
-Flamestep remains missing, and it is deemed he won't return. Much of his family still has hope.
-Slowly, Mantisflame begins to let go, yet the hollowness in his soul remains. Physically he carries the signs of his grief.
Famine strikes
-Acaciafire is murdered by a prey-stealing rogue. The clan is on alert.
-Flamestep returns after nearly 12 moons away. The reunion is dramatic, and it is hard for Mantis to let the reality sink in. Finn struggles, feeling abandoned and guilty for her father's life, and lashes out at Mantis' attempts to console her.
-He begins making a friend by the name Freckledsnow. A she-cat of similar size, the two learn common interests. Like stargazing
-Sophie, a cat that helped Shadowclan during their stay at the waterfall, is attacked by Tundrafang. Tundrafang delaces all rogues should be slaughtered. Mantisflame is again disgusted by Shadowclan's violence.
-Freckleshimmer appears in Shadowclan, staying for multiple nights. Mantisflame tries to pick up any hints he can get... but ultimately he is at a loss.
-Batface relinquishes Starclan, and this snowballs into Fernstar announcing that Medicine cats are able to take mates.
-Flamestep and Batface have their mateship ceremony. Finally, the clan can fully recognize his dads.
