Description
This was a final for my 3d modelling class, last semester.Modelled in a bit of Max, and a bit more of Maya, and rendered in Maya, some color correction and tid bits added in photoshop
I not completely satisfied with how it turned out, but my professor was, so oh well.
Also, final gather quality was rather awful, since the original render made my computer cry, and I had to lower it. I also wish I had time to figure out how to soften the reflections in maya, but oh well.

Using Mental Ray, you can take down the sharpness of reflections. You can do this in Max and Maya, using one of the newer versions of MR...from Max 9+ I think.
You'll need to turn up the samples for them to not look pixelated though. It'll do like a gaussian blur on reflections as the reflected objects get farther away from the reflective surface. It's basically like area shadows but with reflections.

Ah, I see, I guess I missed it since it was under mental ray, and not the material properties.
Thanks!

Ah ok. I don't use Maya, but in the last 3 versions of Max (9, 2008 and 2009), that setting was always in the main material window for each material, so gold, chrome and plastic, for example, won't have the same type of reflections.
I generally use "Arch Design" materials and for both reflection and refraction there are blur and sample numbers that you can change. (lower = more blurry highlights) If Maya has similar materials, just look into those.

Yeah, I remember doing the same in Max. Then when I started using Maya, it was all completely different. I haven't seen similar shaders in Maya, yet, but who knows what monstrosities are hiding under the guise of a 3d modelling app.

Looks pretty cool. Reminds me of the Jedi library in SW Battlefront II.

Pretty awesome looking. The reflections are cool as well as the design.

Thanks, I also have a line of ships planned out with a similar feel.

I like this personally, esepecially how the reflections are handled.
