Description
A "realistic" render of a 1:5 scale Nintendo Gameboy Color I created in Solidworks to be 3d printed in four pieces, assembled, and painted. The model is designed with consideration for the specific tolerances of 3d printing, being hollow to save on material costs with a 1mm thick shell. All details of the original system are included on the model as well, including screw holes, ports, seams and recesses. In addition, the screen is modeled as a separate piece so an image of any game can be printed and applied to it before assembly . Special attention also went into representing the text as .2mm extrusions from the surface to afford the ability to paint them with relative ease. Accuracy is within .5mm.

Nice one! Pretty detailed and realistic. I'm sure its great to have it printed. ^^ Interesting to read what changes you made in order to have it nicely printed and painted. Keep going!

Thanks! There are 3d printing materials that show more details so I could have the text be closer to the actual recess and extrude depths pf the actual system and still show up, but with the material I'm having them printed, minimal details don't show up as well. All things considered, I could just omit the small features completely and the 3d print may look no different in some areas, but I like modeling everything into it anyway. You never know when I'll want to get one printed at a larger scale!

You're Welcome! And thanks for the info. We got a 3D printer here and from my attempts on modeling for 3D printing I can tell that it always is a bit fuzzy. You never get it right the first time you print it. ^^" But yeah, more details are always great. You never know.

What type of printer is it? I'm assuming it's FDM if it's a home printer but for all I know, you could work at a company that uses one of the industrial sized ones! The service I send my stuff to uses SLS.

You're right. It's a FDM home printer. Hm.. sounds interesting. What service do you use?

Shapeways. They're actually priced very fairly. The trick is to print a whole bunch of stuff at once in one file since the bulk of the cost is in the setup. So a one off might cost $15 while you can knock down the price of each down to $10 by throwing a few in at once.

That was my very first Gameboy Color, exact color and exact game. So awesome.

It's too beautiful not to be in one.
Of course the screen lighting was never as good as you've got it pictured here. Always needed one of those spiral worm lights to attach into it to see better, haha.

Haha true. I actually thought about that after the fact - I should have dulled it down a LOT for a more realistic look. Who knows, a lot of people do back lighting mods for GBC's so this could be the result of that. One thing I didn't consider though, is the fact that there's no game in the back X-)

Maybe, you do have a good point there. Hadn't thought of it that way. xP
...Hah, good eye there! Didn't even notice until you mentioned it.
Maybe it's haunted.
