Description
"And you shall not fear the hunters, for though we all must stand before them someday, and the thought may haunt your heart with fear, when they emerge they will welcome you with celebration and embrace you as a friend."I think I've said this before, but the raptors's behavior and culture was inspired by the bushido code of the samurai. Samurai lived and died by their swords, and the blade itself (and the training behind it) was designed to make one or two lightning-fast strokes and the fight was over. That seemed to translate well to raptors attempting to make a merciful kill. Their killing claws are their katanas.
The idea of the Pact was also inspired in part by one of Henry the Eighth's wives. Knowing she was up for the chopping block, she hired a French swordsman to come and cut off her head. Why? Because a previous execution had taken about five axe blows to sever the head from the body. Yeah. I'd want an expertly-wielded sharp tool taking me out, too.
I kept things light in the last panel, partly out of laziness, but partly to accentuate the purity of Lily's act. In all things dignity. Would that any of us would remember that more often. I had to keep messing with my dialogue to avoid becoming too preachy (and I'm not sure I managed it).

I guess the dialogue could come off as preachy, but I don't think it was too bad.

This....is probably one of the most in-depth stories about dinosaurs I've ever seen, and I'm only nine pages in. I'm already in love with the concepts you introduced. Please, tell me, will this story be published? And if it already has been, can you tell me where I might find it?

Oh, wow, it hasn't been published or anything. I'm barely a chapter into writing the novel! I'm really glad that the comic and the characters have gotten such a reaction from people. I intend to keep posting art for the story, so hopefully those will tide you over.

I think this is my favorite page out of all of 'em.. O: Lawl, I can't even describe my thoughts.. I think aokamidu really said it best. I always cringe when I see stories where the antagonist is a predator blown way out of proportion and made absurdly bloodthirsty.. Dx I mean, usually it's for the benefit of kids, who apparently can't discern the good guys from the bad guys unless they have big teeth and scowl, but it still screws up people's perception of natural relationships.
Anyway, I think it's so neat about the raptors.. (: They really do resemble samurai, with their sense of honor, and respect for life (the way they call her "mother" is somehow eerie.. it really underlines their intimacy with the circle-of-life thing, and makes the grandmother's death that much more powerful). The end scene was done really well, too, in my opinion.

I really liked the way you "killed off" the Grandmother (sorry, don't know her name). Both in how you told it for us and in the design and layout of those drawings and squares. Well done!

Hauntingly exquisite. That's all I have to say.
Not out of curtness, or disrespect... but you know how I ramble on and on. Scenes like these are always difficult to pull off without being too preachy or over the top in some way but I think you pretty much nailed it. Especially with the dialogue. It's the best page of the whole story in terms of tackling difficult subject matter. Finally, a nice levelling off of a predator-prey relationship which isn't just automatically bad vs. good. Very mature and ideosyncratic.
Plaudits to you Droemar. Plaudits.

Why do they keep calling her mother? Just out of respect?

I love how expressive you make your dinosaurs while retaining their realism. It's hard to make a natural-looking dinosaur have human expressions without making them ver "Land Before Time" -ish.
Not that I don't like the LBT series, mind you

I like the original movie a LOT, but the sequels are just awful. Awful!
By that same token, LBT inspired me to do the opposite of the predator/prey relationship.

Indeed. I must agree with you there
Also, I'd love to see more of these characters. You just got me so damn intrigued in the span of 9 pages! Not that I'm begging you to do more comic pages...I can see that these probably drove you insane as is, haha.

I picked up the Warrior code in the previous page. Excellent. "Primitive" (for lack of a better world) warring cultures are usually portrayed as randomly berserk, but it's more likely they had the dignity and ethics portrayed here.

Well, part of the inspiration behind it was the way Native American tribes killed the buffalo. It wasn't "Hey, you're a bunch of dumb animals and we're gonna kill you." It was "Hey, if it weren't for you, we wouldn't be alive. So thanks."
I was tired of predator/prey relationships always being bad vs good, the peace-loving grazers versus the wicked, mean ol' sharpteeth.
