Description Here are the final lineage of derived Abelisaurs: the Carnotauridae. Endemic to South America throughout the Cretaceous, these predators began to decline during the Maastrichtian. Seemingly preferring drier, more open environments, the Carnotaurids did not make it far into the Cenozoic. With the spread of tropical forests from the Late Paleocene onwards, along with competition from Megaraptorans and large Notosuchians, these animals died out by the Early Eocene. Only two genera are known from Paleocene deposits in Bolivia: Molinosaurus and Andinovenator. Both were modestly sized, being between 5-7m long although they are not known from particularly well preserved remains. In their place, large Notosuchians and Megaraptorans would become the dominant predators of Cenozoic South America.
