So, A little lore dump for those of you that actually give a toss about that.
Aviatori is a Talavin, a fictional race of avian creatures based on design elements from Rito and Kenku. They're not based on any specific Avian species design, and can be extremely diverse in their appearance.
Talavin have several unusual traits for an avian species, primarily drawing from the Kenku species design:
- Firstly, they're incapable of flight. Despite all the natural capabilities needed for flight the species was magically cursed following a war with several other magic-based races, and is completely incapable of anything resembling natural flight. This has led them to focus extremely heavily on technology over magic, specifically focusing on powered flight technologies. Talavin are expert pilots, and both the fastest and most reliable aerial couriers on the planet.
- The entire species is mute. Talavin communicate through replicated sounds. They can perfectly mimic noises they've heard in the past, but aren't capable of creating their own, and struggle to associate meaning to words, sounds and phrases beyond a general feeling - for example, a Talavin might hear a passing trader stub their foot and mutter 'son of a-', if that particular Talavin likes that usage, any time they want to verbally indicate they've been mildly inconvenienced they'll mutter that phrase, in the exact same tone and voice as they originally heard it.
Talavin do have a rudimentary 'language' based on physical movement, hand signals and motion in a similar vein to modern sign language. They can also communicate in text form, but they generally prefer to convey meaning to situations through mimicked sounds and words, and usually use text for the sake of understanding between themselves and non-Talavin.
Talavin in military-focused roles are taught specific phrases, callsigns and sounds to aid them in communicating whilst in combat. This is augmented with the use of advanced artificial intelligence suites to help convey information between pilots.
- Talavin do retain some magical ability, chief among which is a limited ability to shapeshift. This does come with some drawbacks to it however, Shapeshifted Talavin are still incapable of speech or flight, and they retain their markings, colouration, height and weight. Because of this however, Talavin have a big foothold in the knock-off film industry, Talavin actors will try to mimic the appearance of their Hollywood contemporaries, and simply mimic their lines and dialogue, whilst other Talavin mimic sound effects and background music.
As for Aviatori herself:
She's a pilot with the Talavin Air Force, holding the rank of First Lieutenant. Her squadron, "Cerulean" are loaned out as a 'for hire' team to different countries and organisations. Tori's callsign amongst other nationality's air forces is 'Mule', owing to her habit of simply being overly stubborn, and is generally the name she is referred to by those employing her squadron for the sake of brevity.
Personality-wise she's fairly reserved, friendly at a glance but fiercely protective of those she considers friends. She has a habit of holding grudges against those that have wronged her and those she knows.
Whilst she does have a kinky side, for the sake of professionalism she hides it away. This hasn't stopped some interesting thoughts passing through her mind when she's been the subject of some pranks, and even one 'friendly' kidnapping incident involving another Talavin Squadron.

So yeah, bit of a dump of info, but hey it beats my normal strategy of 'keep it all in your head and assume everyone is psychic'.

I'd say shes more of an alternate form rather than a replacement. Shark Tori still exists, she's just not the "primary" character of choice now, if that makes sense.

So, basically what you're saying about their communication is that they're retarded.
