Description
In the new Halo Cryptum novel there is a Forerunner battle machine called a Sphinx. Hardly any detail is given on these things other than they;re ancient and have four limbs. I don't even know if they're vehicles, ships or Sentinel units, so I turned this Sphinx into a massive four-armed Sentinel/drop ship.Because its supposed to be a ship, it doesn't land but uses its arms to swipe things out of the air or on the ground. It can carry normal-sized Sentinels on board and deploy them (where the Sentinel beam would normally go is now a grav-lift). It can also carry a human crew.
It has lots of visual sensors that see in all directions, and tentacled grippers on the back of the cranium for carrying large heavy stuff around.
This one has spotted Lieutenant Evans trying to hide in the tall grass, Evans has been mutated into a Flood combat form. The other human is assisting the Sphinx.

War sphinxes. They are battle suits. It wouldn't really look a lot like this.

Sigh.
Yeah, I figured that
I haven't read that book and the description in chapter 2 (which is the only part I've read) provided a description so vague I had no idea what the author was trying to convey. I had no way of knowing if they were vehicles, ships or some kind of Sentinel so I stepped outside the square and made it all up.
I AM allowed to do that?
Capri?
Or do I need to explain myself further?

Don't have the book, but I have heard it made the Forerunners into a really advanced military force. When your standard marines fighting a battle on a planetary scale have the potential of wrecking the planet... Yes the Forerunner army DESTROYED planets in ground battles- if what I heard is true.
It also suggests the Forerunners could possibly destroy entire galaxies. That's a really scary thought.
Now the only thing the Ancients have over the Forerunners is that the Ancients can phase-shift into other dimensions. Oh, and the Ancients are ascended.

It all sounds exciting, but alas I don't think it was handled too well by the author and that crowd 343 industries. It sorta makes a mockery of the Halo games Especially the correct description for these Sphinx war machines (which I didn't know about until someone who read the book corrected me lol!).

they are called war sphinxes and they are giant combat armor they have ten meter long tails (like a snake) and an ten meter high torso with a head on top the head is a command unit and the torso is spherical. in the novel the are locked down and the arms are retracted

War Sphinxes are the 10,000 year old original versions of Forerunner combat skin. They're quite brutal, being able to grab ships and toss them around... shit, I'd be crapping my pants if infantry started throwing around the vessels under my command.

Ahh. Thanks for the info! I actually had no idea what I was drawing!
I seem to have got the tail (dreadlocks at the back), torso and head on top plus arms OK. But this war sphinx is definitely not spherical...

And isn't the book description horrible. I wonder if the author had any idea what he was writing about. Probably not.

I didn't have much description to go by to create this thing... the novel's description of the Forerunner Sphinx is quite poor.

its amazing to think that even with these mega sentinals the forunners had to fire halo as if the flood could survive a fleet of those things

inorite? And the Halo book Cryptum contains even more diabolical tidbits...
The Flood was originally a sedation drug given to naughty cats/dogs the Precursors/Forerunners kept as pets.
So they had to fire the Halo array to get this darn pet drug under control!

The creation of the Flood in these books is actually the dumbest thing I've ever heard. This is so bad its like a twelve year old kid wrote those novels... and he's never played even one of the games (because his momma doesn't want him playing violent video games )

I prefer the original canon idea that the Forerunners encountered the Flood as a space-faring super-parasite. It makes the Flood a lot more mysterious and terrifying... now we find out you give a Flood pill to your cat so it doesn't scratch the furniture.

What book were you guys reading?
SPOILERS:
The Flood that the HUMAN encountered were more or less a virus - they used to enhance the beauty of their pets but then when the Flood/Virus had been distributed across thousands of worlds they began to mutate and even infected humans and the earlier Prophets. The Humans were so desperate to hold back the Flood that they began taking worlds from races under the Forerunners protection and scrifced more than a 1/3 of their population to destroy the Flood and send it beyond the galaxy. Its also implied that the Flood were the Doomsday Weapons that the Precursors developed before the ancient Forerunners rebelled against them as a way to get revenge against their creations.

Enhance beauty of their pets O... M... G!!!1! That is far, far worse than pet flea powder *face slams onto desk several times*. I can't believe this was how the Flood got created. Its a complete FARCE. Mr Bear has made a mockery of the Halo games, gol-darn him! And he turned the Forerunners into a joke.

Lord-Hierarch In reply to drskytower [2011-03-27 01:55:27 +0000 UTC]
You misunderstand me. It wasn't how the Flood was created - it was how the Humans and the Prophets believed that their purpose was... after numerous tests over decades. The proto-flood were found on ships of unknown origin by the Humans in containers and they took them for study. The Flood turned herbivorous animals, pets across the Human Empire, into carnivores and nearly destroyed their Empire, a Empire that wasn't too far beyond the Forerunners capabilities. This Flood wasn't even the same Flood that the Forerunners fought - it was less evolved, not as advanced, nowhere as deadly or infectious.
And how did he make the Forerunners into a joke? He made them utter bad-asses. He fleshed them out and gave them reasons, realistic reasons, as to why there semi-unprepared to deal with the new Flood. The Forerunners, 10,000 years had suits that could raze contienents, destroy cities, now out-dated by the events of the book and could be destroyed single-handily. He made the Forerunners into a technological race incredibly advanced.

yeah, basically it means I've got to read the book and figure out for myself if I like it or not. I've only read the 2nd chapter and spent half the time going WTF? And re-reading the entire chapter again. All it did was confuse me even more... since its so vague and basic descriptions are pretty poor, as in - not established, no idea where the hell they are, who the main character is, what vehicle/ship/animal they're being transported on board of, who these humans with him are etc etc. Plus, he's totally clueless and has the intelligence of the average lump of coal. But that's just the 2nd chapter Maybe it picks up in Chapter 3.

You got to give the book a chance. Yes its vague at times (has to be or you'll get screaming fanboys - look at the Halo Encyclopedia for example) but he does it in a way that gives the Forerunners the power that made them such a mysterious race. It adds to their mythology, working hand-in-hand with the trilogy and other books, not contradicting canon in anyway. The books go over such a scale... the Forerunners had opened and studied other dimensions, built planets for simple experiments and craft suns and so much more. The main character is also a kid by Forerunner standards - a teenager and he's stuck doing things he doesn't want to and gets caught in a web planned out thousands of years before his time. By the way, nice art work. I forgot to mention it. Not what War Sphinx looked like but its exotic looking.

hehe, thankyou for the comment on the Sphinx! I did this from the sphinxes mentioned in chapter 2 of that book... no idea what it was meant to look like at the time I drew this (apparently they're egg shaped ovoids with an egg head and two/four arms and a tail) so I made it up!
I'll probably read the book now... give it a chance even though its not available in my country (New Zealand, biggest loser country on the entire planet). Most stuff isn't (such as fast broadband speeds )!!!

This what the WS are described as: ...ten meters high and twenty meters long - larger than contemporary Forerunner suits that served the same purposes. An elongated tail conftained lift and poweer, and from that, at teh front, rose a thick-rounded torso. Atop the torso, smoothly integrated with the overall curvilinear design, perched an abstract head with a stubborn haughty face - a command cabin.
Damn! Well, at least you're not Canada. No one remembers Canada
