Description
I've been planning this one for about a year now. Obviously, I've spent most of that time not working on it but on and off I've been refining the list and getting photo reference. Now it's finally done.
At the risk of getting into a rant, I'll be brief.
I'm sick of seeing the same animals again and again in animal A to Zs because I don't understand what makes an Ostrich more of an animal than an Okapi... apart from laziness.
These are all painted on one spiral bound sketchbook of hand-made paper made by 'khadi papers'.
Each painting is just gouache and 13.5 x 15 cm
The list:
Aardwolf
Beluga
Capercaillie
Dusky Dolphin
Echidna
Frigate
Gerenuk
Hermit Hummingbird
Ichneumon
Jerboa
Kudu
Leatherback
Mandrill
Numbat
Okapi
Pangolin
Quokka
Red Panda
Sun Bear
Tapir
Umbrellabird
Vervet Monkey
WhaleShark
Xenops
Yapok
Zebu

Alpacas are very cute like overgrown hamsters.
My Edition One of my personal ABC animal sets starts anteater. You know, the South American ones like the stereotypical giant anteater and the tamamduas?
The same edition does star an invertebrate which are my favorite sea creatures, the starfish. Edition 1 also has other obscurities lile binturong, fulmar, viscacha, and they end Y and Z (yapok and zorilla).
Of course I used more popular animals like elephant, koala, and jaguar, as well as pets, like canary, guinea pig, and hamster.

I knew 16 of them. I spent half my childhood reading natural history books. (I'd have gotten them all but I spent the other half reading Tom and Jerry comic books.)Β

I used many of the same animals in my A-Z as well. Either under-appreciated or not as well known, or, in my case (since I did it as a gift) particular favorites of the person it was dedicated to. That's how super-common ones got into mine such as Tiger and Zebra.

A very unique and refreshing A to Z collection of animal paintings. You've put a tremendous amount of work into this series, but what wonderful work! Just stunning!

btw, is the ostrich really depicted more often than e.g. the otter?

Duffzilla In reply to enonea [2009-09-24 10:59:38 +0000 UTC]
Not necessarily, there are a couple of variations on every letter but the Ostrich is definitely the most common O in books where I live.

not where I live (different language) searching in google images it's the otter... works for both our languages

aghh I love this : ]
the addition of the numbat makes it even better : 0
they're one of my favorite animals and hardly anyone knows what they are : [
but ahghhhh I still love your simplistic, yet effective style?? I'm not too good at putting things into words fff

Well, for a lot of the animals' names, I'm not sure how to pronounce. Maybe they put simple animal names because teachers/parents/whoever's teaching can pronounce them, otherwise they don't sound smart.

Personally, I don't think so. I blame the originators of the books; publishers and illustrators and their laziness.

Yeah, depending on the parents.... I did try telling one child I know, who had confused a deer for a cow, all about reindeer but I was told to be quiet and "don't confuse her".
It's not the children who're confused.

I love how you didn't fall too heavily on any one taxa. You've got insects and birds and ungulates and cetaceans and...
Even I could only name about 2/3 without looking ^_^
I'm so glad you got a DD or I would have missed out on this.

Duffzilla In reply to SerroMau [2009-09-23 22:36:38 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, I tried to get a good mix and no two similar types beside each other alphabetically. There are a couple of minor cheats such as the tapir being under T instead of under M for Malay Tapir like the one I painted but I excuse myself because ANY kind of Tapir is a rarity in children's books.
Thanks

YES! I'm sick of 'A is for Ant. B is for Bat. C is for Cat." Seriously. There are many different, beautiful kinds of animals out there that need to be recognized!

Ant Bear Cat Dog?
How about Anteater Binturong Canary Dolphin instead?
I used these 1st four animals in my 1st ABC animal edition. I included other out-of-the-box-animals like fulmar, razorbill, viscacha, yapok, and zorilla.

This is the best little A-Z collection ever. Pangolins are my favourite animal, hands down, and this one is incredibly cute. I would love to see this as a published book; I, for one, would buy it.

the numbat is my new favorite animal; thank you!
the illustrations are beautiful, and i love your choice of surface. the orange of the handmade paper is a big step up from your run of the mill white paper.

It's very interesting stuff. It's really difficult to mix the right colour because the paper's tone and saturation is so different to white paper.
thanks
