Description
Edit: After further review, I've revised the context of the whole tutorial. Going forward this is now My Sculpting Kit as opposed to a Starters Kit. It made sense given that's essentially how I'd written it to begin with. In essence, I wrote from the perspective of my own sculpting rather than that of Joe somebody's causing the insurmountable feeling of hopelessness I had hoped to avoid in making this. A rather critical error for any tutorial. While the question has been redacted and the intro reworded to fit the new context, everything else remains the same. Part 2 will still continue as I've written it, each item listed will have a short but detailed description as to the potential uses of the instrument. I emphasize 'potential' because there are a vast number of uses for each one. (And as a way of covering my tokus should someone better should find an even more amazing use out of them) There will still be a 'Starter's Kit' proper in the future. What that will contain I'm not so sure, but for now all I can say is 'hold on'.
/end
This is the first of what I hope to be many more guides I'll be putting up through my course here as a sculptor. As those who've followed me long enough, I've been middling with the idea, writing bits and pieces willy-nilly, handing them off to those whom have the courage to ask. Well enough of those brave souls have heeded the call long enough for me to create a compilation (of sorts) of the best of the best. A "frequently asked questions" compilation or, as some put it, an FAQ. And its all thanks to those who did ask (because I would have no clue how to do this otherwise
As being my first, I hope that its alot less confusing to read than it was to setup. But of course, should there be a problem/issue, feedback is always welcome. I will say this: Graphics design hasn't been my forte in years. Ergo the black and white, bold ass text for everything! mentality. Just covering my bases. Perhaps they'll become prettier (even presentation worthy!) but till then information is info. I hope its to your liking
If you want more questions to be answered, hit me up with a note or a comment below! Be one of the brave whom get their questions answered! (Just don't ask me the meaning of life. srsly don't)

Hey! That's more than enough to get started sculpting! I had about as much when I started (except I had aluminum bead wire and no sand paper) After 3 years of doing this, I've accumulated so much stuff I thought I'd share what I've got.
Iso-propyl alcohol you may know as Rubbing alcohol or First aid alcohol from a Pharmacy. It's not wholly necessary to start and it is toxic if used improperly. But can be useful to smooth out sculptures of finger prints when used.
I hope you have fun sculpting!

Thank You for making this but one question. Do the Super Sculpey Glaze get's sticky on your sculptures? I hear that some people say that on there's it do and some it don't.

dustysculptures In reply to MekoNekoAnime1 [2013-09-04 14:15:21 +0000 UTC]
Not in my experience no. Sculpey Glazes are water soluble and doesn't become sticky unless they're drying up in the bottle (in which case you can add water to reconstitute it, only if you're early enough). But Varathane (a wood finisher) which I've used and has been suggested elsewhere, is very sticky when applied and dries sticky as well.

yup. Its gotten better with experience but sculpey is still very fragile when baked. Even so, cracks aren't always catastrophic, most of them are just not packing the clay tightly enough. Still there are many techniques you can use to fix them.

Ive never used wire. But should i worry about it shrinking when i bake it?

No, copper aluminum, and steel craft wire all work well without shrinking~

In the US you can find Super Sculpey, Sculpey 3,or Premo in most arts and crafts stores~ elsewhere it's a bit harder depending where you live.

The one on the bottom. Which Sculpey is that? it looks bigger than the packaging at my local stores? (I live in the US)

That's half pound translucent Sculpey in front of 1pound Super Sculpey. They're also usually told at arts and crafts stores if not you can always find then online~

I do have one question - what do you mean by leaching the clay?
Thanks and great work!

^^ Here ya go! Hope this helps~!
The turntable/lazy susan is immensely useful ^^ Just because it gets you in the mindset of having to see the sculpture from all 360 degrees around. Its pretty important~

Yes, the turntable is on my wishlist. Someone said that they have it at Bed, Bath and Beyond, however I have not had a chance to get there as of yet. Maybe soon
Thanks again! I love your work btw. You are very talented.

You can definitely get them from Bed, Bath, & Beyond. Tho, iirc, they tend to be larger and made of wood therefore heavier.
My turntable is a cheap plastic one from Amazon: [link]

This is exactly why I won't get into sculpting, as fascinating as it might be to me. It just takes a ton of stuff to get started and it's a risk I don't think is worth taking when I'm not even sure how well I'll enjoy it. Oh well, at least I can still point my eye holes at your amazing sculptures.

If you haven't seen my ponies, go take a look at my gallery. Most people think they look fantastic and the only tools I ever use are my fingers and sometimes a toothpick and I use the same clay that Dusty uses so you can definitely get by with less

You can get away with a lot less. The first one I made all I had was: Super Sculpey and a knife. Granted it was no where near what Dusty can make but it was still a pony I was proud of.

Yeaaaah~ After I posted this I realized I listed more than I thought I did. In reality this is just a list of tools I use on a daily basis that have sort of accumulated after 1 1/2 years of doing this. (Some of which I had from years prior). So I'm going rethink this. Probably separate it into 3 parts: A 'true' Starter Sculpting kit: Essentials, Necessary, and 'Later on' tools.

Okay...so now I know why I only use my fingers and a toothpick (aside from paints and a paintbrush) ...it's because if I had all those tools on my workstation there would be almost no room left for my wads of scrap clay, empty clay wrappers and all the rest of the garbage covering my work area! How can you make anything with such organized cleanliness!?!?
Aww crap...I lied, I do use a pair of vise-grips with wire cutters for the armature wire, but it's only because my teeth aren't strong enough!!!
Nice of you to show people your kit!!!

DX I blame my laboratory upbringing~ Everyday I work at that table, I have this ritual where I clean everything down with alcohol. The table, the mat, especially each tool. Its a bleed over from BioLab, when we were working with bacteria daily. The storage closet tho? Is entirely a mess. I should get it cleaned out but that would require me to move boxes and....well nah not for me.
I just keep everything else in mugs next to the desk~ I've got like 3 of them filled with various tools and brushes and stuff. Actually half the tools here I already had lying around (ergo the pink cutting mat). The only things that were new were the pasta machine and the consumable stuff (clay, wire, isopropanol). It all just seems organized really

Well, if you saw my workstation you would probably want a tetanus shot just from looking at it!!! It is pretty bad. I have stuff everywhere. I was being truthful about not having tools because of no room for my mess! If I did use tools they would surely be consumed and never seen again in a matter of days

You can get isopropyl alcohol in any pharmacy in the first aid aisle. I'd recommend getting the highest % brand as those evaporate faster but honestly any brand should work.
BECAREFUL! Though. Alcohol is very poisonous both ingesting and smelling can cause terrible reactions. Also it's flammable, so no fire nearby. Otherwise use common sense when using it and you should be okay~
Good luck! I wish you the best!
