Description Marvelous Designer Guide for Daz Studio Users

There are many reasons that you might take the decision to use MD, but for now, I’m assuming that you wish to create a piece of 3D art using your own characters and your own clothing designs.

This is the first of a series of tutorials that will take you through the process of exporting your character from Daz, importing it into MD, designing your outfit, animating the avatar into your desired pose, and exporting the clothing back into Daz.

I'm still using MD2 but if you are fortunate to own MD3, the principles and the process are the same, only the interface is different.

The described process uses .obj format because that's the way I've always done it, due to the .dae export not working properly when MD first came out. As far as I know it does work now, although I've never tried it, so you're welcome to substitue .dae export for .obj and see what happens.

The download zip also contains the tutorial in .pdf format if you want to print it out

Other tutorials in the series can be found here: dylazuna.deviantart.com/galler…

Thank you for the MD Tutorials!Β  Being able to walk through a print version of instructions is a huge help for many of us!Β  I am glad the link still worked in the MD Forums to get here.Β  So many of them are obsolete.Β  I can't think you enough!

dae import from poser works just fine in MD3 with the exception of the eye materials. Β haven't tried the daz studio -> dae -> MD3 workflow yet.

I can export .dae from daz and load it up as an avatar in MD, but it won't animate Β  I've tried several times now, using different export parameters but I can't get it to work for whatever reason

The .dae workflow is as follows:
You need 3 character files, an avatar .dae file for modelling garment, a target pose .dae file and the same target pose as an .obj
Create garment using the avatar as normal
Open the target pose .dae using File: Open: Avatar and save it as a .pos file File: Save: Pose
Load avatar and garment
Open the saved .pos file File: Open Pose
MD should then morph to the target pose (for me nothing happens here)
Once you have your posed garment, you then need to load the .obj file as avatar and adjust the clothes to fit. This is due to slight size differences between the .dae and daz/poser.
Finally, export your posed clothes as an .obj

If you try this, let me know if the animation works

:big grin: See? I told you. We need you. For the the first time ever MD starts to make sense even to an idjet like me. Thank you, d, for putting time and effort to share your knowledge in these tutorials, it's much, much appreciated.

Thank you
If someone finds them useful or picks up a few tips, then I'm pleased.
They were fun to do and I've actually learnt a few things myself.....all those shortcuts keys for one

I'm waiting until the MD team stop being silent and start addressing all of the queries the release of MD3 has generated.

I've managed to pose my characters now and it is so much easier and also works much better than pulling the clothings into their place! Your information was very helpful!

This will come in handy for Poser to MD

dylazuna In reply to Shango-ThunderStones [2013-08-25 06:21:45 +0000 UTC]

I'm not a Poser user but have heard that the cloth room gives Poser advantages over Daz when it comes to importing MD garments

Shango-ThunderStones In reply to dylazuna [2013-08-25 13:57:36 +0000 UTC]

So have I but I don't use the cloth room. Tried it a few times and gave up... Maybe I'm just not that good with that part of Poser yet.

dylazuna In reply to Shango-ThunderStones [2013-08-26 06:00:05 +0000 UTC]

Ah well, I guess you can use this workflow then. You can export/import using Poser units instead of Daz ones.
