Description [DOWNLOAD or FULLVIEW for best results!]

Learn how to properly attach the torso and legs of a model! Special thanks to *XNAaraL for helping me with my first MeshMod because I got stuck on this part myself. XD
If you have any questions, feel free to ask, and I will try to help you if I can. :]

Also, this is the SAME process you go through to attach pretty much every single limb! All that changes is what bone you attach it to, so for instance, if you wanted to add Lara's head to Jill's torso: prepare both models separately and then select Lara's head (Jill's torso in this instance is the base mesh) and attach her head to the torso via the UPPER NECK bone. Then save the new file and rename the bones accordingly.

Really easy stuff once you get the hang of it... :]

I have a few more tutorials planned (for XPS and beyond), so stick around!

...also, sorry for the soapbox speech, but I felt it needed to be said... :/ It's not for me to decide who can and can't make models. All I'm saying is, if you want to make them, then at least make them well. :]

The skin part you combine at the elbow bone, not spine or anything (Its not elbow fix bone either, just elbow bone).

So from reading all of this makes me think can I save a model that I edited the proportions on? (body size, hair etc)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

aydean In reply to emofurry69 [2014-07-11 09:32:27 +0000 UTC]

Absolutely. When you save the model, just be sure to select the "modify armature according to current pose" option and all modifications will be saved. Keep in mind you can edit any bones on the model and then save them using this option, so you can make the model taller, shorter, shrink or enlarge the bust, shorten or elongate the hair, or even do simple things like correcting the T-pose or making your models load every time in a custom pose.

Thanks a lot for the tutorial!
But I'd also be very thankful if you could help me with a little problem! When I try attaching the head to the body, the body's spec and bump maps are gone. And when I try doing the opposite (attaching the body to the head), then the head's, including the hair, spec and bump maps are gone. I tried looking up how to restore the maps, but that didn't work. The maps are simply nonexistent in the mesh.ascii file. Any ideas what could be causing them to disappear like this?

aydean In reply to IsaCrisis [2014-04-12 13:35:12 +0000 UTC]

This is caused by a glitch in XPS. It's not just a typical problem but one that is guaranteed to happen almost every time. To get around this, you can create brand new lightmaps, bumps, and specs in Photoshop. And then use Notepad++ (a mesh-scripting program) to make the model's file read them (and to make a ton of other awesome edits, like renaming confusing meshes).

This is a LONG, annoying process that will take several hours, and that's just working in Notepad++. It's worth the effort, I think, and as you can see on this model , she actually has pores on her face (they're really visible on her cheeks and just above her eyebrows). That's one of the more awesome things you accomplish by adding in new masks and better bump maps through Notepad++. I'm using psychicsocial 's model as an example because she's the one who taught me how to do this process.

Oh, I see. That sucks, but I get it! I'm just glad to know it's not something I was doing wrong  I already have Notepad++ it's just that I only know the very basics xD But I'll just take a look into some more tuts for the creation of the maps and using Notepad++ then (: Indeed a great looking model there! Thanks a lot for the help and for taking the time to reply to me, really!

Well. I finally accommodated the suit in the model. I'm working with the bones renaming, putting (unused) #, and... what is the final step?

aydean In reply to Leon5cottKennedy [2013-10-23 20:19:28 +0000 UTC]

Once you get all the bones renamed, just save the model.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

aydean In reply to Leon5cottKennedy [2013-10-23 20:47:59 +0000 UTC]

Then when you're separating the swimsuit from the model, you're not saving it correctly, hence why the original model sticks around but doesn't show up until the end.

Damn! when I try to combine the accesory with the target model, the accesory moves from the original position. Why is this happening?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

aydean In reply to Leon5cottKennedy [2013-10-23 18:07:53 +0000 UTC]

It's usually because you didn't save either the accessory or the model properly. Or you didn't save them at all before attaching. If you separated the accessory yourself from another model, be sure to save it as a new model in a new folder. And if you altered the model (or accessory, for that matter) at all, you'll need to resave. My guess is, if the models are saved properly, than the positioning is off in some way.

IKeelYou457 [2013-10-22 00:44:42 +0000 UTC]

I seem to have this same problem with the head not going with the body, probably because I forgot the most important step of all: removing the "attached (body part)" text from the newly attached bones.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

aydean In reply to IKeelYou457 [2013-10-23 18:10:28 +0000 UTC]

Actually, removing that text is part of the bone renaming stage which you always want to do last. Altering the bones causes the model to longer be meshmod-able. If the head isn't attaching, try resaving the models, careful to double check the options you've selected. That's usually the problem. Be sure to resave whenever you alter anything.

IKeelYou457 In reply to aydean [2013-10-23 18:38:00 +0000 UTC]

Oh, I finally got the hang of it now. The reason why I was having a problem was because I was connecting the body to the head, but not the other way around...

Hi , and thanks for the great tutorials!
I was wondering if you could tell me a couple of things! I am trying to add a torso to a legs mesh and after I do it (adding it to either the root hips, root ground or pelvis), the shoulders and some other bones of the torso stop working. Is it to do with the mesh or I'm probably doing something wrong?
Also, I want to join shoes with legs. Do I add the shoes to the legs or the legs to the shoes, and to which bone?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

aydean In reply to cherryraids [2013-06-26 18:02:21 +0000 UTC]

Are you saving the model before you test the bones? Before saving, the model will not act properly. Be sure to always save before testing it.

And I've never been able to attach a clothing item to a body part (like shoes to feet) before in XPS. But for shoes, I would attempt to attach them to the ankle bones, perhaps. But even then the shoes will be attached to only one ankle, either the right or the left, which will throw off the posing no matter what. :/ Typically, to add clothing to a bare body or bare feet, you're going to need a more advanced program, like Blender. XPS just won't work for it... unless the shoes are separate items and you can attach them one at a time.

cherryraids In reply to aydean [2013-06-27 08:03:14 +0000 UTC]

Thank you very much for your answer!

No, I am always saving the model and then add it again to test it. It still doesn't work. I guess there is something wrong with one of the model parts, because when I attach another part to it, the relevant tree with the 'attached...' lines does not appear in the bones window.

As for the shoes, you are right. I finally found another solution (got legs with shoes already attached to them )

aydean In reply to cherryraids [2013-06-27 18:16:56 +0000 UTC]

Welcome.

Well, usually, if the bones are not showing up, the problem is that the parts aren't attaching correctly, so like if you attach a head to a body and the bones' list isn't affected, then the head didn't stick. There was probably some error you made when preparing the models for meshmodding that caused them to not function properly. Start over and be careful to only select the options listed in the tutorials when saving models. And (another common error) be sure that all bone renaming is done once the model is completely finished. Altering the bones' names prior to that will cause any future meshmodding to be pointless.

Position it in front of the model's face, and I would recommend attaching it to one of the neck bones (preferably the upper neck bone). :]

When I comes to "add to" session, I have to attach the body to the head (and iy resulting the head positioned properly), not to attach the head to the body, because when I do so, the head is suprisingly positioned between her thighs..

The models that I used to combines are, body from "Other M Zerosuit by Bluej97", and the head from "samus_princessv2 by bstylez", the reason for combining this two models is I need samus model with full featured head (so I can adjust her face expressions)

But, Thankyou ~aydean, I'll try again from the beginnig, I believe I've missdone something in the process..

This Tutorial is realy awesome, I realy thankyou for this.. It's like my dream to combine the heads model to every outfits (if possible) is come true..

But I have one problem, perhaps there is something I miss to do from your tutorial..
I saved two models (head and body in separate folder), n then I tried to combine it, it succesful, but when I try to bent her upper spine (from body base because it's the only visible), the head is not following.. is there something I do wrong in "bone" thing?

When I tried to bent the chest bone (from attached bone), nothing happen, perhaps since its already hidden..

Please me..

aydean In reply to jonysambel [2013-05-28 03:06:44 +0000 UTC]

I'd say you're probably attaching the head to the wrong bone. Be sure you're selecting the head to the "upper" or "lower" neck bones of the body (whichever works better in posing). And make sure you're attaching the head to the body and not the body to the head. :] I'm sure you're not making that mistake, but these are the two causes that come to mind concerning your problem.

Also, be sure you save your combined model before testing the bones. Unsaved models don't always behave properly. :]

aydean In reply to MADFAG [2013-05-22 04:59:45 +0000 UTC]

Okay, for the bones you still need that don't move, are they named correctly (and by that, I mean, "leg left thigh" and such) or as "(unused)." Because, in the newest version of XPS, any bones named "unused" are hidden by default, so you're probably using an older version. (That shouldn't affect the effectiveness of the bones. It's just something to keep in mind because the mechanics are different for older versions.)

And for the other bones, I honestly don't know. Try renaming every one of them the exact same: "unused" (no number and no quotes). See if they go away then.

how do u delete a bone?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

aydean In reply to BelowHeaven [2013-04-04 01:11:30 +0000 UTC]

Double click the bone's name (first click will highlight it in blue, and the second click with allow it to be renamed). Change the bone's name to: "unused" (minus the quotes), and the bone will become "hidden." Deleting bones requires using two additional programs to turn the mesh into a word pad file. Hidden bones are easier, and they'll stay out of your way just as well.

Also, do note that renaming bones is always the VERY last step. Make sure you're 100% finished with the model (minus texture changes) before changing the bones. Models with altered bones in XPS cannot be used in meshmods.
