PLEASE READ BEFORE YOU REACT:
It was a roller coaster of emotions for America this past weekend. Cory Monteith from the popular show, Glee was found dead in his Vancouver hotel room at the age of 31. Tim Lincecum pitched a no-hitter for the San Francisco Giants and George Zimmerman, the man accused of murdering 17 year old Trayvon Martin, was found not guilty of second-degree manslaughter. All of this happened on one emotional Saturday night in July. On Sunday, people gathered in every major city protesting the verdict in the Zimmerman case. Most of the protests were beautiful, touching and non-violent displays that would have made Gandhi and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr proud while a few protests were violent and got out of hand.
I spent most of the weekend contemplating the details of the shooting and it really bummed me out. When I heard the initial verdict, I was enraged and like many took to social media as a proverbial pillow to scream into. I was always under the impression that it was an open-and-shut case and that Zimmerman was guilty. The self-defense argument always seemed like a stretch to me because Zimmerman actively pursued Trayvon with a loaded weapon after being advised not to by the 911 dispatcher. When Martin got the upper hand in the fight, Zimmerman shot and killed him and then claimed self-defense.
Studying the actual court case when it comes down to it, the defense gave a better argument of what happened the night of the shooting. Period. The prosecution did a terrible job arguing their side of the case. It was almost like an older sibling's argument of "well he started it" and trust me that never works. It just wasn't enough. Do I think Zimmerman is innocent? No...the defense proved that there was a reasonable doubt that he acted with an intent to kill.
Honestly, no one truly knows what exactly happened that night. The only two people that know what took place is George Zimmerman and Trayvon Martin and sadly it's a one sided argument because the other side is dead. If I put myself in Trayvon's shoes and a car was following me, I'd react the same way he did. I'd be terrified and run. If I felt like I was cornered, I'd defend myself. If I put myself in Zimmerman's shoes and if I saw a suspicious character in my gated community, I would definitely call 911 but there is no way I would pursue a possible criminal inside or outside my car for fear of my life. Zimmerman sounded afraid in his 911 call and I'll never understand why he ever got out of his vehicle. I guess a gun gives you brass balls.
George Zimmerman is however guilty of being an idiot and if there was a law against stupidity, he'd get a possible life sentence. It wasn't illegal to get out of his vehicle and engage Martin but we can all agree it wasn't smart. If he'd just stayed in the truck, he wouldn't have put himself in a position to defend himself and a 17 year old kid would still be alive.
Art has always been my outlet when I need to express myself or vent. I specifically love drawing superheroes. I love the idea/notion of superheroes and I'm sure George Zimmerman does too. I'm a huge nerd for Captain America in particular. I love what he stands for and I especially love the fact that under no circumstance does he kill. I wanted...no, I needed to draw something that doesn't take a side-- that is just an ideal version of the situation that took place that night in which no one was killed and the event was uneventful. It was a terrible incident all around that occurred on the night of February 26, 2012. There's nothing to celebrate here whether it was the right or wrong decision made by Zimmerman or the right or wrong verdict made by the jury. A kid is dead, and a responsible adult would have stayed in the vehicle. Enter Captain America.
Rest in peace, Trayvon Martin.

This drawing isn't about who was innocent or guilty. You don't know what happened. No one does but Zimmerman and Martin. Just let it be sad...for all parties involved. Zimmerman is free but has to live with the fact that shot and kill a kid when it could have been avoided. He will never have a normal life. And the Martins have lost a son. It was a terrible incident for everyone. If Zimmerman could do it again, I bet he stays in the car and waits for police.

Just because he didn't do everything within his power to avoid a death does not mean he's deserving of punishment. If his story was true, then I don't see why he should be punished for Trayvon's attack. That's victim blaming.

I just don't have the words for this. Says anything far more poignantly than I could.
