I call this particular type of bodyplan 'vermiform'; I think worm-shaped organisms and artificial devices will be very commonplace throughout the universe, because the design is useful and versatile.

I prefer the arachnid body shape, or perhaps radial symmetry. Worms have too big a turning radius. In Orion's Arm, the Muuh have probably the most versatile body shape, in my opinion.
