Description My directions on this piece originally were simple. The book wasn't finished being written at the time. The title was "WAR!" for the game Shadowrun (which I've been playing for 18 years - so I'm extremely familiar with it) and it takes place in a South American "jungle". I was originally told to make it "REALLY MILITARY" and my original concept sketch had all of the characters in full OD uniforms and drop gear. The back cover was very different. That original concept was a live trid-cast of a bad airdrop (just a little too late in the morning - missing pre-dawn) with all hell breaking loose live on camera. When I submitted it, my husband and I asked a simple question of Catalyst - "Where were the Shadowrunners?" Catalyst did a double-take and had to re-edit the book realizing that the staff accidentally wrote a military campaign setting instead of a Shadowrun campaign setting. They reissued art notes - and most of the characters were redesigned. I kept the front screaming paratrooper - he was just too cool to change - but I had to recostume the others and completely reshot the back cover with new models. I also had to scrap the "LIVE From the MILSEC Channel!" concept because Shadowrunners wouldn't do that. The post-dawn paratrooping fiasco got a little lost because the theme changed. I originally had gorgeous dawn tropical rain forest colors throughout, like all of the Vietnam/Sandanista/Contra photos and films are - but Catalyst is in Seattle and they preferred "tropical rain forest" colors to be grey. Oh well. There was also a bit of controversy over the back-cover Yakuza character. She originally had full-Yakuza tattoos all over her body, with rather large cleavage exposing the tattoos. Of course, playing Shadowrun, most characters with fancy tattoos protect it with a nanotech skin-armor enhancement called Orthoskin. It's a standard cybernetic enhancement in the game - so even with exposed cleavage she wasn't unarmored. Catalyst wanted her changed. They didn't think anyone would understand about Yakuza or Orthoskin and just see a woman with an exposed chest in a war zone. Anyway because they are the client - I added a futuristic looking pressurized oxygen mask to her and covered up her chest completely. That ruined her Yakuza character and about 4 hours worth of work I did on all those tattoos. But the really funny thing is that with all the controversy over this woman's supposedly exposed cleavage - NOT ONE PERSON has ever questioned the guy parachuting wearing a kilt! ROFL! People are weird.

Because there were so many requests to see the comparison, I finally made one:

War! is my favorite Shadowrun supplement, so it's an honor to meet someone who worked on it. Thank you for your work.

Whether business is slow or you just need some training, military service will get you the skills you need for all the dangers of Running. A half-decent check and the chance to get your hands on some good equipment doesn't hurt either.

My GM runs Shadowrun MilSec a little differently. They only hire freelancers for "Volunteer/Suicide" missions and they have to bring their own equipment. Otherwise it's a contracted tour for 24 months or a disposable shanghai'd A-Team.

The cover was the thing I liked about the book the most. The rest of its contents, eh...

LOL! Let's just say that in the first draft I was given - it didn't even include any information about Shadowrunning. My husband and I asked Catalyst about that and they gaped and turned red. Then they went back and 'fixed' it. So, if you can imagine it, it was actually WORSE.

Actually, we had a fan project over at dumpshock titled alt.War, where a bunch of fan tried to make a better supplement on Shadowrun wars in the 70ies, but for all I know, the only vestige left of it is my part on Russo-Yakutian War being written endlessly :3

Frankly, I just expected the book to be more general, like, say, Fields of Fire. Describing not a single campaign, but the way wars are fought and the way runners may partake. Instead, I got magical designators and Slow

My husband came up with at least 3 unique ways to get Shadworunners involved in military engagements both for profit and against their will and shared them with Catalyst. It's not that we expected them to use them (but they are awesome!) but we thought they would at least offer something for players. I'm really disappointed with the book - but really REALLY proud of the cover. My father was a Green Beret, and the concept is about the hell received when a parachute drop is delayed until after the dawn (called 'missing the dawn').

My father was with the GRU, they paradropped in the dark routinely. Though, of course, those weren't mass drops.

I'd like to second seeing the original Yakuza. I wouldn't mind seeing the green jungles, either... Why in heaven's name did they settle on grey?

I wish I could see the two versions of the Yak girl you're talking about now. Those types of tattoos should not be wasted.
