Description Here we go! If you want to maintain the illusion that my hair is actually magical and glowy and long and blonde, look away now. XD

GOOD GOD THAT TOOK AGES. Kudos and credit to for the amazing beta job (she is incredible, all remaining mistakes are my own) and to Alice, my flatmate, for being that other person in Step Ten. Alice also deserves credit for putting up with me for the week it takes to make this wig. Seriously, it's hair everywhere, make sure no one is going to destroy you before you try this. And remember to clean up after yourself! XD

As it says in the tutorial this is NOT the easiest way to make this wig. Buying a bucketload of colour-matched extensions, for example, might be easier. I had no luck finding golden blonde extensions though (as opposed to ash, platinum, etc) and I am a pedantic little twit. You may have more luck than me though!

I really hope someone finds this useful. I'm posting it by popular demand and I've seen a lot of people wondering how to tackle it, so hopefully it'll come in handy! It's lovely to be able to feed back into a community that has given me so much. Please let me know if you have any questions - I'm happy to answer, and if there are a lot of them, I'll post a FAQ.

Good luck! Follow your heart, make a wig, find your Eugene (...profit?).

So I've had this bookmarked on my computer for months. I then go to check out your deviantart after chatting with you at the convention today and it automatically came up as I typed your URL. What a small world!

Thanks so much for all your time today, I look forward to seeing you tomorrow afternoon!

Totally doing this for my Rapunzel cosplay I'm going to be wearing to the Renaissance Fair next year! One question: what's a weft? I've bought wigs before, but I've never heard that term applied to them. Thanks SO much for the tutorial! Definitely much cheaper than buying a professionally made Rapunzel wig!

before I ask any of my questions - this is a super-amazing wig and you make such an adorable rapunzel!! ahaha, anyway~ I plan to make rapunzel over the summer holidays, and I came across your tutorial and I think it's really easy to follow and it's really good! I've read through it, but the one thing I don't get is step five. I'm looking at it and....well what I think you do is glue the wig fibres of the extension onto the batting, but I'm not entirely sure that's right....are you able to clarify it a bit? (also, sidenote, I squealed a bit when I realised you're from australia and you wore this to melb. supanova in 2011, and I plan to do it for melb. supanova 2013 )

PS. I wish I could be there to see it, but I'll be overseas next year! Best of luck, I'm sure you'll wow them. ;D

Yup, that's exactly what I did! It doesn't have to be perfect-looking (because it'll be covered up), nor completely firm (because the plaiting will hold it in place) - it's just to sort of tack the batting in for the later steps.

Try to stick the strip of batting into the middle of the extension, so that hair covers it on both sides.

i'm making a wig similar to this (not for Rapunzel, though) and what i need to do is glue the extensions together like in paragraph two of step seven. i see what you did, but i just wanted a little reassurance. you hot glue one extension to the end of the other extension to make it longer?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

echoing-artemis In reply to bototocheecks [2012-11-01 22:46:29 +0000 UTC]

Hmmmm. Not quite, I think - the short extensions/wefts are hot glued onto the longer extension, which acts as a base. Does that make sense?

XxBabygreeneyesxX [2012-04-22 01:21:41 +0000 UTC]

So to make the wig thick you just wrap it in cotton batting?? lol Do you know where I can get cotton batting for cheap?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

echoing-artemis In reply to XxBabygreeneyesxX [2012-04-22 11:00:43 +0000 UTC]

Er, other way around! You wrap the cotton batting with the extensions. xD

As for where - depends on where you live! Nearly every fabric store I know stocks it though (for quilting, soft toys, cushions etc), that's where I found it.

echoing-artemis In reply to Arysia17 [2012-01-27 00:42:10 +0000 UTC]

No problem, I hope it helps!

Hmmmm. Caulk is a sort of clear drying adhesive/filler that's often used in home repair to fill gaps & seal things together. You can see another example of it used in wigs over here . She actually sells it, too! Just here .

Hi! I have a quick question if you don't mind. I was working on this today and I'm having a problem with the batting. How think was yours approximately? (with or without hair, whatever you remember).

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

echoing-artemis In reply to ProtectorKorii [2011-12-06 23:02:52 +0000 UTC]

Hmmmm, I'm not entirely sure what you mean. Are you asking how thick the batting was? I can't really remember! About half an inch or so - it was the only batting they had, so I didn't have a lot of choice.

What's the problem you're having? Knowing that, I might be more helpful....maybe. ;D

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ProtectorKorii In reply to echoing-artemis [2011-12-06 23:19:12 +0000 UTC]

I was asking how thick it was.

I started out with really thin batting so I had to layer it to get a fuller look. My problem is that I can't seem to find the balance between how thick the batting is and how wide it is so that I can make it as 'thick' looking as your braid was at the end.

echoing-artemis In reply to ProtectorKorii [2011-12-06 23:36:18 +0000 UTC]

It sounds like something that might just require a bit of experimentation. Trust your instincts! And probably err on the side of caution - a braid that's slightly too thin would look better than one that's slightly too thick (and be easier on the neck!).

I'm sorry I can't be more helpful, but good luck!

I'm not totally understand the bangs part.

would buying some really really long wigs work out just as well for the hair? I found one i liked and i could just buy several of them.
I'm just not sure how to make sure that i can side part the hair..not really sure how to check for that either.
what neadle and thread would you suggest for the sewing part?

Where can you find some? xD
Thanks!

echoing-artemis In reply to damselle-xo [2011-06-21 01:50:43 +0000 UTC]

Oh goodness, I can't even remember! I actually bought it for a wig three years before this one (er, a little goes a long way with caulk) so I'm honestly not certain. You should be able to find it at your local hardware store though - just be sure to find one that dries clear!

damselle-xo In reply to echoing-artemis [2011-06-21 07:35:07 +0000 UTC]

how long did you cut the batting? did you cut it as long as the extentions or what? how long are the extentions?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

echoing-artemis In reply to sar-bearsayshi [2011-05-07 03:43:19 +0000 UTC]

Slightly shorter than the extensions - you don't want them poking through the loose ends of the plait. The extensions themselves I didn't trim - just straight out of the packet! Just check their length by holding them up to the nape of your neck.
