Description Here we go! If you want to maintain the illusion that my hair is actually magical and glowy and long and blonde, look away now. XD

GOOD GOD THAT TOOK AGES. Kudos and credit to for the amazing beta job (she is incredible, all remaining mistakes are my own) and to Alice, my flatmate, for being that other person in Step Ten. Alice also deserves credit for putting up with me for the week it takes to make this wig. Seriously, it's hair everywhere, make sure no one is going to destroy you before you try this. And remember to clean up after yourself! XD

As it says in the tutorial this is NOT the easiest way to make this wig. Buying a bucketload of colour-matched extensions, for example, might be easier. I had no luck finding golden blonde extensions though (as opposed to ash, platinum, etc) and I am a pedantic little twit. You may have more luck than me though!

I really hope someone finds this useful. I'm posting it by popular demand and I've seen a lot of people wondering how to tackle it, so hopefully it'll come in handy! It's lovely to be able to feed back into a community that has given me so much. Please let me know if you have any questions - I'm happy to answer, and if there are a lot of them, I'll post a FAQ.

Good luck! Follow your heart, make a wig, find your Eugene (...profit?).

Okay, didn't comment on the rest of the tutorial to wait until the end... but you are AMAZING. This is perfect and such a clear explanation of what you mean and how to do this amazing wig! I think batting is a fantastic idea - I was so worried my wig would be too heavy if I tried to tackle this. You've given me renewed hope!!! Is this the first wig you've constructed yourself? Just wondering... I hope this doesn't seem rude, but approximately how much did each of your parts cost? (Base wigs, extensions, etc?)

Also... you're an Aussie too?

Added to my cosplay inspiration folder

Thank you so much! I really appreciate the comment, you're very sweet! <3

It's not my first, but I haven't done very many. Last challenge was probably Nuriko from Fushigi Yuugi, but that was before my DA days (I've only been using this for maybe a year!). Definitely the biggest yet!

Cost wise (pah, don't worry about asking, I don't mind) - the wigs were quite inexpensive for what they were. Bought them from ebay for about $25 each. Extensions are really cheap, at about $4/packet. The flowers cost a bit for what they are, probably $30 total. So I guess you're looking around $170?

Goddamit cosplay no wonder I'm poor. :S

RaimeiThunderChild In reply to echoing-artemis [2011-04-17 12:18:25 +0000 UTC]

No worries

Oh wow, so I'm guessing they're definitely not a kanekalon or other superstrong fibre - but then again, I guess if you're only going to braid them back, you don't need the extra styleability that a stronger fibre brings. Can you remember which wig seller you got them from? I'm hopefully going to be lucky with the flowers- a friend of mine works at spotlight so if I use her discount, silk flowers should come down in price a fair bit

I KNOW RIGHT. It's like you're making your cosplay and paying for it one element at a time, so you don't realise how expensive it is as a whole until you're totting up your receipts at the end and then you're like GODDAMN, THIS is why I have no money

I'm equally bad at updating my dA. I really got into cosplay only in the last year, and I haven't updated my page AT ALL since then. Whoops!

thank you so much for the kind answers to all my questions!

I know, right?! Honestly I think they were a bit of a bargain - they were lovely and thick, and highlighted with about three shades of blonde. I can do you one better than the seller though, they're still selling the exact wig! This is the one over here . SEE HOW CHEAP. Let me know if the link doesn't work for you. :3

That is exactly how I feel about the cost! It just adds up! Then I hear someone say "oh, it only cost me about $70 to make this costume" and I think HOW.

Good luck, and let me know how it goes!

Hey lovely, just starting this and I just wanted to ask, do you have any links to the tutorials you used to get the French/Dutch braid for her fringe happening? I just don't know how good my plaiting skills will be at combining the two types of plait.

Also, if you want to keep everyone up to date - the wig seller you bought your wig is still selling this one, but she's now separated out the listings for the different colours. The new correct link for the light blonde is here: [link] (It's still the wave with the long fringe, at 55cm long).

Again, thank you SO SO MUCH for all your help and advice on this earlier in the year!

Oh, thank you for the update, that's really important for me to note!

I'm afraid I can't help with the tutorials - I just googled at the time and didn't bookmark anything. I'm sorry!

Best of luck though, let me know how it goes! I'd love to see the finished product. XD

Hey lovely!

Another update - your wig seller is still selling these wigs, but something that might be nice to note for others doing this wig is that she's very flexible on pricing. I put in a 'best offer' for what was essentially buy four wigs get the fifth free, and she accepted within minutes.
I'm so excited now that they're on the way!!!

YOU ARE SO LOVELY THANKYOU THANKYOU THANKYOU

I think the people who say they've made their cosplay on the cheap have either spent months picking up bits and pieces and then either think "hey, with all this stuff I can make X cosplay!" OR they've deliberately picked up things over a long time for a dream cosplay. Or they're like me and forget to keep receipts then guesstimate, leaving out the most expensive parts. I'm doing an anthropomorphic GLaDOS cosplay for Perthnova *fingers crossed* if everything goes to plan, and I know that will cost me easily two hundred.... :S but worth it for my dream cosplay.

Thanks so much! I'll probably be doing it in February 2012, for my 21st birthday

but i have a question because i bought a 51" wig, should i just buy one more wig thats 51" or just a buntch of extentions

Awww, thank you!

Hmmm. Well, it's all up to you. Extensions would definitely be cheaper, but the thing to check is colour matching. Most online extension stores run colour matching services - ikickshins.net sends you samples, doctoredlocks requests a sample of your wig and mails you the closest match.

If you can't find a perfect colour match (like me D you'll need to buy another wig.

sar-bearsayshi In reply to echoing-artemis [2011-04-17 06:09:59 +0000 UTC]

yea i checked ikickshins.net and their extentions are cheap i think i might buy from there, but ill check my local wig store to see how much it would be there.

would you recamend the extra long jumbo or regular jumbo braid?

thank you so much. your so helpful and nice

echoing-artemis In reply to sar-bearsayshi [2011-04-17 06:44:41 +0000 UTC]

Ha ha depends how tall you are, and where you want the wig to fall to! Just hold a tape measure to the nape of your neck and check the length. I used the standard (48 inch) length and didn't trim any off. :3

Good luck!

Omg it's STUNNING.
How do you manage to keep it on only using like 5 bobby pins!? it looks so...incredibly HEAVY

Awwwww, thank you! So kind of you to say! <3

Honestly I have no idea. XD It slipped a little on the first day, but that was because I put it on next to the car. The next day, with a proper mirror, it was fine! I packed a whole heap of painkillers expecting to end up with a monster headache and/or neck ache, but I just...didn't. It just sorta sits comfortably on the head (but it does pull you back a bit balance-wise). Yay! \o/

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Mi-Dango In reply to echoing-artemis [2011-04-17 06:41:12 +0000 UTC]

Aww i wish my wig did that. I only have a clip on ponytail but it causes the basewig to slip back an unbelievable amount.
Anyway, i wish i could see you in real life except you're a few hours away in Melbourne and i'm in Sydney D:
Best of luck in everything you do!

DAMN. you are a GODDESS.

how long did it take? do you think it could be easier with two floor length wigs?

AND. you could make a FORTUNE on making and selling these. I SHALL BE YOUR FIST CUSTOMER.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

echoing-artemis In reply to Kataang15Love [2011-04-17 05:20:28 +0000 UTC]

Aawww, thank you! It took about a week to make, but that included an awful lot of drying time (the caulk in particular generally needs overnight) and procrastination ("once you glue that, Mel, you can't take it back!").

I definitely think it would be easier to use long wigs - to get the bulk though, I think you'd probably need at least three or four (though you should still be able to slip in some batting). The problem with long wigs, of course, is that they tend to be exorbitantly expensive and limited in colours. D: When I looked I could only find ash blonde, but it would be worth another try!

Oh my god I think my flatmate would actually murder me if I started taking them on as commissions. It tends to make a mess!
