Description Here we go! If you want to maintain the illusion that my hair is actually magical and glowy and long and blonde, look away now. XD

GOOD GOD THAT TOOK AGES. Kudos and credit to for the amazing beta job (she is incredible, all remaining mistakes are my own) and to Alice, my flatmate, for being that other person in Step Ten. Alice also deserves credit for putting up with me for the week it takes to make this wig. Seriously, it's hair everywhere, make sure no one is going to destroy you before you try this. And remember to clean up after yourself! XD

As it says in the tutorial this is NOT the easiest way to make this wig. Buying a bucketload of colour-matched extensions, for example, might be easier. I had no luck finding golden blonde extensions though (as opposed to ash, platinum, etc) and I am a pedantic little twit. You may have more luck than me though!

I really hope someone finds this useful. I'm posting it by popular demand and I've seen a lot of people wondering how to tackle it, so hopefully it'll come in handy! It's lovely to be able to feed back into a community that has given me so much. Please let me know if you have any questions - I'm happy to answer, and if there are a lot of them, I'll post a FAQ.

Good luck! Follow your heart, make a wig, find your Eugene (...profit?).

I love this wig as Rapunzel's hair is long, from a cosplayer view it is quite expensive to own a wig that is almost to the floor I remember getting charged $500 for a Sofia wig and look how short her hair is.

Have you tried forever young? They have like every shade and blend of blonde imaginable-wigs and extensions. They even have an Elsa length wig.

Are plaits the same as regular braids? Cause if they're not then I'm gonna have to find a tutorial on how to do a plait.

"Plait" is the British term for braid.

Absolutely stunning job on your wig. I definitely am going to use your tutorial as opposed to others I've found.
I have one question, though... maybe I'm just missing it on the tutorial. But I'm having a little trouble seeing exactly how you created the small, thin plait that's incorporated into the whole, large plait. Is that the French braid you mentioned in step two? Sorry if I'm being unclear.

Thank you so much! I'm glad you're finding it helpful.

Yup, it's the Dutch/French braid in step two. I didn't go into too much detail because there are heaps of tutorials out there on them already....just borrow from one of them :'D

NO WAIT!! I get it now. I wasn't understanding the third part of step 12, but now I see that the little plaits are made with the leftover wefts... just felt like I needed to let you know haha!

i'm gonna cosplay rapunzel at an upcoming anime convention this weekend. i had not much time or money so i just bought one long wig. but i still wanted to give it something special to make it up for it because its not so huge as its supposed to be, so i put some lights in it. i bought battery operated leds. it looks like its glowing ^^

but this tutorial looks really helpfull. i think when i have more time and money i will make a wig like this but im gonna make it glow like the wig i have now, i think in that case i need to buy a lot more lights to make it glow through the big braid ahm and thanks for the tutorial. i'm definately gonna use it.

That sounds great! I did think about making it glow (I was tossing up with fibre optics stuff - if you google glowbys you'll see what I mean), but it just wasn't in my budget at the time. D':

Maybe if you go ahead with the tutorial you could try that out!

Through this method does the wig shed easily much/does the hair detach or fall out easily?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

echoing-artemis In reply to fragile-star [2013-05-04 03:04:51 +0000 UTC]

Nope, not that I've noticed (it's pretty stuck in there!). The worst you get is a bit of matting on the underside where it brushes against your body.

SlumberPoppy [2013-01-05 14:36:47 +0000 UTC]

a question though...

How to you maintain/clean up your wig?
With the wig washing and all? ;n;\ especially if it -accidentally?- collects dust or such?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

echoing-artemis In reply to SlumberPoppy [2013-02-22 02:41:04 +0000 UTC]

I actually stored it with the wig cap stuffed and sealed into a box, to try and dodge the dust problem. -___- You can wash out the wig cap carefully (and restyle the bangs), but unfortunately this particular tutorial doesn't lend well to washing the whole wig!

Thanks so much for posting this! I had no idea where Rapunzel cosplayers even got started. Does the wig get tangled at all? Is it really heavy? >_<

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

echoing-artemis In reply to xJupi [2012-12-18 10:55:04 +0000 UTC]

No problem! There's a FAQ that might help with a few things. As for tangling (ha ha!), it gets a little matted underneath but that generally can't be seen.

AnachronisticSiren [2012-08-12 23:08:09 +0000 UTC]

This tutorial is *amazing*. Quick question, though; do you think the same method would work for doing Rapunzel's hair the way it is in the Disney parks, where it's only partially braided? [link]

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

echoing-artemis In reply to AnachronisticSiren [2012-08-26 11:53:59 +0000 UTC]

I actually did think about doing it that way originally - I ended up going screen accurate, but I certainly get the appeal!

I think it should, so long as you make sure you plait it over the shoulder rather than plaiting it straight and trying to get it to sit right later.

I wouldn't be totally convinced its the best way though - it gets a big thick around the neck! You would also have to use a longer wig for the ends, I think, since the park Punzie has quite a bit loose. You might have to experiment! <3

kairiheartprincess [2012-08-04 19:54:43 +0000 UTC]

Thank you for this! I was wondering, do you have recommendations for transporting such a wig?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

echoing-artemis In reply to kairiheartprincess [2012-08-11 11:54:37 +0000 UTC]

Oh man, not really! It was such a debacle, and I'm not necessarily sure I'd actually recommend my way!

Basically I used a big, sturdy giftbox so that nothing would be crushed. I filled the net of the wig with newspaper/tissue paper to hold its shape for the trip.

It gets a little more damaged with each trip, but it generally looks okay!

kairiheartprincess In reply to echoing-artemis [2012-08-11 16:18:29 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! I've heard recommendations of synthetic hair spray being used. I consistently just wore my old one to conventions, but it's now trashed so I'm making a new one.
