Description
Here we go! If you want to maintain the illusion that my hair is actually magical and glowy and long and blonde, look away now. XDGOOD GOD THAT TOOK AGES. Kudos and credit to for the amazing beta job (she is incredible, all remaining mistakes are my own) and to Alice, my flatmate, for being that other person in Step Ten. Alice also deserves credit for putting up with me for the week it takes to make this wig. Seriously, it's hair everywhere, make sure no one is going to destroy you before you try this. And remember to clean up after yourself! XD
As it says in the tutorial this is NOT the easiest way to make this wig. Buying a bucketload of colour-matched extensions, for example, might be easier. I had no luck finding golden blonde extensions though (as opposed to ash, platinum, etc) and I am a pedantic little twit. You may have more luck than me though!
I really hope someone finds this useful. I'm posting it by popular demand and I've seen a lot of people wondering how to tackle it, so hopefully it'll come in handy! It's lovely to be able to feed back into a community that has given me so much. Please let me know if you have any questions - I'm happy to answer, and if there are a lot of them, I'll post a FAQ.
Good luck! Follow your heart, make a wig, find your Eugene (...profit?).

how bad of an idea do you think it would be to buy two of these instead of 5 shorter ones?

Thank you!
Hmmmm. I think - while it would seem easier originally - it might actually end up trickier. Long wigs are really difficult to keep untangled (hah!). The short wefts were also really handy for filling up gaps, as they were just the right size to cover a bump in the plait.
That said, it would work out! Theoretically it should be just fine. It's totally up to you, whatever you think would suit you best. I'd love to see the results!

This a great tutorial, especially since I plan to remake my Rapunzel wig. If you don't mind me asking, what is a good estimate on the cost and weight of the finished wig? Also, which wigs did you get as a base?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
echoing-artemis In reply to Cadebee [2011-09-12 23:20:37 +0000 UTC]
Thank you! And not a problem, I don't mind answering questions. Cost-wise it set me back less than I thought, around $180 (inc. flowers etc), partially because I found the wigs for quite a low price over .
Weight-wise...I'm afraid I never weighed it. I'm not going to lie and say it was easy to wear all day (it pulls you off balance a fair bit), but I never had a headache or felt scalped. It sits pretty well. :3

I'm really glad you toughed it out and finished this project. I learned so much and it was really fun to watch the wig develop.
On that note, would you be willing to help a noob? I have a cosplay project in mind, but it requires a lot of long, loose hair (about 5 to 6 feet long). Do you know where I could buy artificial hair that long, preferably in natural colors?
Also, in a reply to a deviant who had a similar question, you mentioned buying long extensions and a long haired wig and weaving them together, and I was curious as to how that would work?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
echoing-artemis In reply to Koosahmii [2011-05-31 04:24:54 +0000 UTC]
Long loose hair is trickier - you can't disguise seams and things the way I have here, so it literally needs to be all one length. To look smooth, I think you'd have to simply purchase a wig long enough. You could add in extensions if you wanted extra bulk/thickness (such as for Rapunzel's thick braid), but I don't think you'd be able to use them to add length. :S Good luck!

Steampunk-Girl In reply to ??? [2011-05-20 11:02:55 +0000 UTC]
My question is... how did you manage to move with all that weight on? I wore a wig that was half this thinkness (but almost as long) and I had to carry it over my shoulder to share the weight, or my head would be pulled backwards!
Still.... this is the most amazing Rapunzel wig I've seen! <3 than you so much for sharing your knowledge!
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
echoing-artemis In reply to Steampunk-Girl [2011-05-31 04:21:51 +0000 UTC]
Ooooh, it most definitely pulled me backwards. But it didn't pull too much on my scalp or compress my head, which is what I was worried about - I actually packed painkillers because I thought I'd be having headaches all day! Wasn't too bad at all though, just a little tiring.
Thank you for saying so! I hope it helps others. :3

Just curious..I hope you don't mind me asking. Overall how much did this wig take to make? I'd like to pursue a similar thing in the future if its not too much improve on my cosplay.

Extensions came from ikickshins.net, but they're sold out (I'm hoping that wasn't my fault!). doctoredlocks has the same extensions though for a similar price.
The wigs came from ebay - there's a direct link to the wig itself somewhere in the comments!
